"There's a youth revolution going on in the party," said Howard Dean, who was chairman of the Democratic National Committee. "You're going to see a real reform movement — not just in Congress, which will resist for institutional reasons, but you'll see it in the country. And that's what you're going to see at this convention."

Eva Longoria, Kerry Washington, former “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Tracee Ellis Ross will each emcee a night of the convention, with Longoria on Monday, Ross on Tuesday, Washington on Wednesday and Louis-Dreyfus on the convention’s final day on Thursday.

Three of the four are minorities: Longoria co-founded the Latino Victory Fund and held a “Presidente Finance Council” fundraiser for Biden recently as she continues to bring Hispanic voters into the party. Washington and Ross are both Black American women who have devoted their work to numerous causes uplifting their communities’ voices.

@Marie

the conventions were lively things when the nomination wasn't locked up and the nomination wasn't locked up in those days because the DNC didn't control the outcome.

The mellow version of what I thought is "I hope the people who run the Democratic Party retire". Just between us, though, I thought something more drastic.

up
13 users have voted.

@Shahryar power to select the nominee was in the hands of local and state delegates (party officials and VIPS) and state delegations. Candidates wooed delegates before and during the convention. Ordinary voters were irrelevant. Lots of backroom deals -- the public didn't see that liveliness. They did see/hear floor fights among delegates and delegations. Generally the nominee wasn't known until after one or more roll calls when one candidate had received enough votes. Then the process for the VP began.

1968 for the Democratic Party was (approximately) half old-school and half 'democratic' (delegates representing the results primary elections). That was a total ruckus in the convention hall and a police riot in the streets. So, Democrats got reform, primaries or caucuses in all states. There was a presumed nominee going into the convention. The old-school didn't like the results at all. And after two of those election cycles, they added the superdelegates that could override all those pesky primary voters. (And a number of those were needed by Mondale in 1984.)

Still the presumptive nominees held off on naming the VP until the convention. So, that left some surprise during the convention. Dukakis ended that tradition.

From '88 through '04 the power was with the superdelegates, but the DNC was slowly gaining more power. Primary elections became window dressing. Then something weird happened in '08. AA voters bolted from HRC and dragged previously committed AA HRC superdelegates with them. The front-loading of southern states in the primary process put HRC on the ropes, but still she persevered for months and months.

The concession that Sanders got at the '16 convention -- beginning in '20, SDs can't vote on the first ballot -- no longer mattered because after 2008, the DNC assumed the power and SDs can keep their powder dry.

IOW -- for the illusion of voter choice in Democratic Presidential nominations (real only for one and possibly two election cycles), we gave up lively national conventions. Those were at least entertaining for the public and we had no illusions that we mattered.

Followed by almost a half hour of bedlam at the 1960 DNC, with people chanting “We want Stevenson!” and the chairman futilely gavelling for order, muttering into the microphone that “This demonstration has got to stop.”

Of course no one really wanted to nominate Stevenson a third time — it was just theater. But heartwarming emotional theater in honor of an intelligent and decent man who had answered his party’s call and flown two kamikaze missions against Eisenhower.

either, but i'd been bingling for a thing i'd seen at Newsmax or somewhere about amy the klobuchar having introduced a Vote by Mail bill. turns out it was in march, but the first hit was the NBC news vote by mail state by state rules, so...

i clicked into our email provider just now (msn) and the homepage had '6 takeaways from Night One', tra la la. michelle ma belle spoke for 19 minutes, and the portions they quoted about 'we go high, they go low', and her explanation of 'we go for the cold hard truth'...almost made me want to vote for trump./s

this is obscene: relatives of both george floyd and eric garner spoke on behalf of biden (and i assume KopMala (h/t aliasalias)...about the urgency of police reform. iirc, amy the klobuchar will speak, even though her dirty paws were all over george's and others' assassinations by The Po-po. they got some huevos, i'll say that.

and four! count em: four! republican bigwigs spoke for the duo! bernie love was strong, apparently. existential because: trump. now it may be true that it's on him that a reported 170000 amerikans have died of covid-19, but they brought speakers in for a number of them, including a child named skylar.

the musical theme of the night was bruce springstein's the rising. would he have agreed beforehand? beats.me.

There was a disgusting (according to the NPR people "courageous") video of a young woman who claims her father died of Covid because he listened to Trump and didn't take the virus seriously. He went out to a bar with friends in FL. Of course her father had no responsibility to think for himself...he was just a Trump zombie. I thought blaming Trump for his death was beyond the pale.

I watched Bernie's speech .... don't exact know what to say. It was half how absolutely evil Trump is and half how Joe is going to fix of all this with his great (compromised) policies. I was beyond sad to see him this way.

And Michelle said, "the Presidency doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are." I said out loud, "you betcha honey, and your husband revealed a lot that I would rather have never seen!"
She's a mess!

Not tuning in anymore. It's an obscene infomercial designed to hide and obscure the truth about Joe Biden. And Judy Woodruff (whose husband Al Hunt wrote an over the rainbow fluff piece on Biden) gushed and gushed about this farce, basically enabling the dems to lie to us. Talk about dangerous to democracy! This fusion of media and political party is what is going to kill this country...um along with the health system lobbyists.

@Fishtroller 02

Almost everything she accused Trump of doing just highlighted how her husband did the same things during his 8 year squat in the Oval Office when after he accomplished his goal of becoming president he just preened and lectured us on how presidenting is hard. Boo Hoo.

I asked Michelle how this gobbly gooked comment offered us any idea of how Biden's presidency would pull us out of the economic dive we are in. How it was going to bring back the millions of jobs that are not coming back...ect.

So what do we do now? What’s our strategy? Over the past four years, a lot of people have asked me, “When others are going so low, does going high still really work?” My answer: going high is the only thing that works, because when we go low, when we use those same tactics of degrading and dehumanizing others, we just become part of the ugly noise that’s drowning out everything else. We degrade ourselves. We degrade the very causes for which we fight.

But let’s be clear: going high does not mean putting on a smile and saying nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty. Going high means taking the harder path. It means scraping and clawing our way to that mountain top. Going high means standing fierce against hatred while remembering that we are one nation under God, and if we want to survive, we’ve got to find a way to live together and work together across our differences.

And going high means unlocking the shackles of lies and mistrust with the only thing that can truly set us free: the cold, hard truth.

link

end the chaos and division—and keep alive the possibility of progress on the issues we hold dear—we’ve got to vote for Biden. What progress on which issues are in danger of going away Michelle? Possibility is a tad like access isn't it? We can have the possibility of universal health care through access to the ACA? I have the possibility of buying a corvette except that I don't have access to the money needed to buy it nor do I see that happening any time in the future.

Michelle's speech apparently drove people to outright weeping with tears running down their faces. Well that's nice. But it was just more claptrap for the masses that will do nothing for the millions who are on the brink of losing everything they own after the government shut down the country and didn't plan on meeting long term financial help for us.

It was more than that, though. She crystallized the emotional tenor of the nation right now. It was fierce, defiant, empathetic, gentle, angry…...I could go on with adjectives.

Screw your plea for unity Michelle and democrats. It's as empty as the 8 years of Obama. One other thing I kept pointing out was if democrats thought it was too dangerous to hold the convention in public then how in the hell is it safe to send kids back to underfunded schools so that parents have a way to return to work during a pandemic? Chuck said if we don't then we are responsible for the economy not returning to normal. F you Chuck. We refuse to be Capital Stock for the 1%.

Call now and for $19.95 you too can have this genuine knock off of Michelle Obama's VOTE necklace plus $100 for shipping and handling. Can't afford to pay all at once? We offer a 10 year plan of monthly payments of just $29.95/month at 39% interest. CALL NOW!

to run ads against the Public Option that Biden has insisted is better than universal health care. Guess they didn't have to do that since Biden and the dems have backed off on that plan and are just going to strengthen the flawed ACA that leaves millions without access to health care. Bernie said that he was staying in the race so that he could persuade Biden to pick a few of his issues. Well Biden and the delegates said screw you Bernie and your supporters. We will not concede on any issues that we don't feel are in our donor's best interest. They run the country and you guys know it and there is nothing you can do about it. Vote for us anyway because Trump is bad and besides you have nowhere else to go.

Exploiting dead people, who can no longer speak for themselves, is almost always unseemly. The daughter's claim that her father's only preexisting condition was believing Trump is false. WRT cornonavirus, he had two obvious preexisting conditions: 1) age 65 and 2) obese. While it was stupid for such a man to go to a karaoke bar in late May, he may not even have contracted the virus there considering that it was more than eleven days (near the outer limit from infection to illness before he felt ill and sought medical attention. He was tested that day and got his positive results the next day (fast turnaround compared to most that are tested). Then he went home -- apparently without any medical guidance. Five days later he went to the ER, only placed in ICU several days later, and died four days after being in ICU. Unknown is if he infected anyone else (his SO tested positive w/o symptoms, but she could have passed it onto him).

There's no valid excuse for the Trump admins pathetic handling of the epidemic, but there's also no evidence that a D POTUS would have done all that much better.

and it seems to be more than 'a PSA of dubious value'. i'll have to come back and read some of snoop's and others' after i fashioning the loaves for their final proofing.

today's 3-loaves-of-bread day, and another day of mis-fires by appliances, etc. but i did get a rest, and peeked into wsws and found:

Democratic convention opens with appeal to right-wing Republican support’, Patrick Martin, 18 August 2020, wsws.org

a few bits and bobs:

Sanders was given a prominent position in the evening’s proceedings, second only to Michelle Obama. He went beyond even his groveling endorsement of Hillary Clinton in 2016—which has been repeatedly attacked by the Democratic Party establishment as insufficiently enthusiastic. He declared the election of Joe Biden to be the solution to all the social and political evils of modern America and, above all, to the growing threat of authoritarian rule emanating from the Trump White House.

“As long as I am here, I will work with progressives, with moderates, and, yes, with conservatives to preserve this nation from a threat that so many of our heroes fought and died to defeat,” Sanders said.

Claiming that the Democratic party had embraced “progressive” ideas such as universal health care and free public education, Sanders declared, “Many of the ideas we fought for that just a few years ago were considered radical are now mainstream.”

This is a ridiculous fraud. Joe Biden was the Senator from Delaware, the corporate tax evasion capital of America. His entire life has been dedicated to the defense of the social interests of Wall Street, consummated by his stint as vice president under an administration that funneled trillions to the banks, declared crooked bankers “too big to jail” while it allowed millions of families to lose their homes. Harris is a vicious ex-prosecutor and California Attorney General who dragged non-violent drug offenders to prison and presided over the nation’s largest prison population.

The unofficial slogan of their campaign, bluntly stated in private by Biden to wealthy donors in New York, is “nothing would fundamentally change.”

Sanders spoke only minutes after the appearance of former Ohio Governor John Kasich, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, and three other former Republican politicians, including billionaire CEO Meg Whitman.

Michelle Obama, the final speaker of the evening, was extravagantly praised for her address, which was devoted to a purely personal denunciation of Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic as incapable, incompetent and indifferent. This is not a hard case to make, but in comparing Trump unfavorably to Barack Obama and Joe Biden, she avoided the central question—thrown back at her by Trump in a tweet the next morning—if the record of the Obama administration was so wonderful, how did Trump get elected in the first place.

The Democratic Party explanation for the 2016 debacle, made implicitly throughout the speeches and videos Monday night, was that Trump won because white workers are racist. There was not a hint from any speaker that the Obama administration, by bailing out Wall Street and imposing the burden on the backs of working people, by continuing and expanding the wars of the Bush administration, alienated large sections of workers, black and white, which allowed Trump to win his narrow victory in the Electoral College.

Urquiza’s remarks were deeply affecting, but equally angry statements could have been recorded from those who lost parents in New York nursing homes because of the negligence of Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, or from the bereaved survivors of workers who died after being forced back into Michigan auto plants under Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Instead of a place in the rogue’s gallery of coronavirus criminals, however, Cuomo and Whitmer were given featured speaking slots Monday night which they used to denounce Trump for the mounting death toll from the pandemic. Meanwhile, they falsely claimed that their own approach—in two states with nearly 40,000 fatalities and 600,000 infections combined—had been successful and humane.

holy hell, i hadn't heard she'd spoken last night!

Similarly, two brothers of George Floyd spoke movingly about his murder by Minneapolis police, recalling his compassionate and generous nature. Other speakers described their participation in the mass protests that erupted after Floyd’s killing on May 25.

This was followed less than an hour later by the appearance of Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, given a featured slot to sing the praises of Biden. As the top prosecutor in Hennepin County before her election to the Senate, Klobuchar refused to prosecute a single Minneapolis police officer for violence against the people of that city.
