Forward Strategy

So I've been worrying about keeping forward momentum whether or not Sanders wins. A significant part of that worry is how highly distributed our movement is right now... distributed enough that it lacks a real focus. There are quite a few sites like this one and that, in and of itself, worries me. I've been wondering how we can coalesce around one central source for generating strategy and then the subsequent calls to action (donations, volunteering, running for local office, etc.).

This may be old news for some of you but today I ran into Grassroots Select. I'm intrigued because it seems like it is closer to the sort of crisp organizational model that I think we need going forward than anywhere else I've looked.

This article, How We Can Push Bernie’s Policies in House, Senate, and State/Local Races is a great example of the sort of thing I think we need.

As Bernie Sanders has said, democracy is not a spectator sport. It demands action from all voters, at all levels of government, in order to work. Real systemic change requires allies in every branch of government supporting and encouraging that change, otherwise the forces of the status quo prevail. To paraphrase FDR, it is the responsibility of voters to make sure their representatives in national, state, and local governments do what is right and deliver the change we need.

In order to ensure that Progressive policies are implemented regardless of whether he wins the nomination, we must apply coordinated pressure to candidates in primary and general election races to convince them to adopt his stances.

Constituents of local candidates can take a variety of concrete actions to pressure candidates to adopt Bernie’s policies. Even those of us outside a given constituency can still contribute to these efforts.

They have an entire section on candidate profiles although I think it could be improved with some information about the financial requirements for each candidate and the difficulty of the opposition.

I like that there's a corresponding reddit and on there you can find things like call for volunteers which links you to a google form where you can select a wide variety of skills you have to help out including things like tech experience, graphics design, research, writing, and more.

Actress and Bernie surrogate Susan Sarandon interviewed tonight on Chris Hayes' MSNBC show.

"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."

"The status quo is not working"

Sarandon makes a good surrogate, in that she is clearly speaking as herself and not as a campaign representative. She calls out Hayes on the lie that Obama reined in business from which he took money, and said that she doesn't believe that Hillary would. This is the reason, she proposes, that people backing Bernie aren't necessarily going to back Hillary if she wins the nomination. She herself isn't sure what she would do at that moment, which is what many people are thinking right now. So as I see it, the thing to watch is whether Hillary can reach these people. With her current announcements, I don't think she will.

Vowing To Oppose Everything Trump Attempts.

And grassroots implies a lot of activity coming from the base, not so much directed top-down from any one source. Nice to see another good source of information listed.

I'm repeating myself but we have an amazing organizing vehicle in the Sanders campaign.I see no reason to abandon it just because we have passed an arbitrary electoral milepost.Bernie has criticized Obama for abandoning his grassroots organization and Bernie stresses the ongoing nature of the political revolution in every speech. This leads me to believe that he has a post election plan.I would like to see that plan fleshed out a bit more.

The Sanders Foundation? The Peoples Political Action Committee? The Sanders Never Ending Tour?

On the practical side, even if donations were just 80-90% of campaign levels we're talking about 20-40 million dollars annually.Enough to support a robust central organizing structure.

Additionally, and equally important,we are witnessing, and part of,an internet based communication network that can bypass establishment media outlets.Combined with the existing infrastructure of the Sanders campaign we can be,we will be, a political force to be reckoned with.
