Tired of the Negativity?

I tripped over a Mr. Rogers' story a few moments ago.

It seems that out in Ohio some people are having a hard time because restaurants and bars are not doing well. As a result some working families are headed for ruin.

In this particular case a young couple with two children have been renting a place for about one year and they don't how they are going to make it during the next few weeks. Their landlord called this evening to checkup on how well they all were doing, and told them that he would not be charging them any rent for the next two months. And that if things haven't gotten better in two months they would "work it out" … somehow.

          Somedays, I actually like people.

Hopefully more people will do this because lots of cities are closing down bars and restaurants everywhere. Last night they were supposed to reduce occupancy, but now it's just take out food.

This is why reducing the payroll taxes won't work. If you don't have any income then it doesn't help to not pay taxes on it.

all our problems on taxes, @snoopydawg . It's way off and easily disproved, and I'm pretty sure it came about from several decades of nonstop rightwing talk radio. Repetition, repetition, repetition. After a while you believe it.

The root cause is that for many years economics faculty members have taught a "classical" approach to their subject.

It is a lazy approach that makes for easy teaching algorithms and mindless "research" papers and PhD dissertations.

Okay, we're entitled to our opinions, but why do assume yours would cause hurt feelings?

An economics professor that yelled "you don't know what you are talking about" and then never talked to me again, for the rest of his life, literally.

Additional evidence that my opinions hurt his feelings: He lived one block from my house, and for the rest of his life he made every effort to avoid interacting with me. This all because I gave a presentation entitled, "The Inevitable Demise of Capitalism."

Over the years I have given presentations on various topics that have generated similar responses. On one occasion the offended individual was a dean. That extended episode of pique did not end well for the dean.

unbalanced individuals who were more attached to intellectual concepts than to the living world around them brought a whole heap of undeserved abuse onto your head, @PriceRip , right? Well, I'm sorry they treated you that way. You have every right to express your thoughts and opinions. The first amendment gives us a vital liberty, but it doesn't protect us from social retaliation, alas -- although the SJW's have been seeking ways around that.

Your economics professor had apparently conflated his intellectual assent and/or moral agreement to a specific ideology with his very raison d'etre -- kind of like putting everything you've got on a racehorse, or a bet, or a religion. Uber-capitalists truly do worship The Market.

Although . . . I don't understand why you would consider me a hardcore ideologue of any sort. I don't trust ideologies as I'm pretty sure life is not a mere intellectual exercise. If it's because I sometimes use overly formal terms, please forgive, it's the best I can do. Language is extremely difficult for me. I love it anyway.

I actually don't know you as in you the person. I do not have the capacity of reading something you might write today and connect that with something you wrote some time in the past unless that something for some reason some how became incorporated into my long term memory. I do not have a well developed (non-eidetic ? for the lack of a better term) memory module. I use the phrase, I don't do well at remembering "factoids" or bits of facts. So I don't consider you a "hardcore ideologue" or hold any other opinion of you.

Your question about "undeserved abuse" doesn't connect well with what I thought I was writing. So, once again I don't have a response to your statement. I just think it was really memorable that this individual would never interact with me because of that presentation. That is, I never thought of his actions as abusive, he was just weird.

stuck in a horrible system focused on profit and greed. How nice when our better nature rises above the greed.

this wakes us up collectively.

Yesterday, my husband and I drove into the metroplex to visit his dear tiny Italian 94-year-old mom who has dementia. She lives in a house with 5 other women. Yesterday was the last day to be able to visit until at least April 1. It is at least 60 miles. On the way, we noticed that all of the fundamentalist and mega prosperity gospel churches still had full parking lots.

And I read an article that said Trump is still holding rallies with these folks. Bernie canceled his rallies.

What will this mean?

My church has cancelled services and moved on line (Morning Prayer instead of Eucharist). None so blind as those who will not see.

Of course the real problem (as usual) are the leaders of these congregations, who are in love with their own vanity.

I read how an Evangelical church said that to it's congregants. "Do you really think gawd will allow you to get sick if you come to worship him?"

Reminds me of the guy on the mountain who was waiting for gawd to save him so he passed up the boat and every other thing to help him. While he was drowning he asked gawd why he abandoned him. "You idiot why didn't you take advantage of the things I sent your way?"

The Mormons have closed Sunday services and general conference was teleconference only and rethinking of sending out the missionaries that have been called up.

The pope cancelled Easter services and many churches are not doing Sunday services. I am sure other religions are doing the same.

So not sports on TV for those stuck in their houses. No outdoor activities for many sporting events. Bars and restaurants all over the country are closing. How much longer will movie theaters be open? This is going to have a devastating effect on the economy.

Rising spoke to a D congress member about the bill the house passed and said that it fell far short of what is needed. McConnell is delaying his bill in the senate for later this week.

But hey the banks got another bailout which did nothing for the market this morning. Well done. $4.5 Trillion sure would have helped a lot of Americans instead. SMDH.

Somebody posted a suggestion on Nextdoor that we pay special attention to older or chronically ill neighbors who may be in need of help, and the outpouring was amazing. People really do want to be part of a caring community. It's in us. I've seen signs elsewhere too, and what is most striking is the contrast between the official government response (or lack thereof) and the people themselves.

Just one more reason why democracy would work far, far better than corporatocracy.
