Betelgeuse Stops Dimming, Starts to Brighten--Science Open Thread

Well, no supernova this time around!

Astronomer's Telegram reports that the red supergiant star, Betelgeuse, has started to brighten once again.

Oh, well.

Anybody got any good science news?

especially since it's generally so obvious and especially lately in the Southern skies. It's a wonderful form.

In Coromandel town the other night. Milky Way, Canopus straight overhead - and I saw Alpha Centauri and the Southern Cross for the first time!

Beside the pleasure of viewing the southern cross for the first time, have you discovered the delicious smoked fish on the peninsula? The Coromandel is my favourite destination for its access and beauty. PM me if you have the time and want to see a beautiful part of Auckland - Huia, or close environs like Whatipu.

If you are headed to Northland, make sure you check out the Hokianga.

Cheers!

Mrs Fish and I are flying back to Seattle tonight. We had a wonderful time despite the raining out of the south island tramps. We got a refund so maybe we will be back some day.

I wish I’d had your recommendation on the fish - our tour had dinner out one night and I went for the ribs. Still it was very beautiful and there is a lot of pressure building to relocate down here (RocketLab had a job listing that matches my skills if I get too annoying as a retiree...) but I really want to do everything to get Bernie across the finish line.

Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse and Bernie will appear out of nowhere. In a hospital waiting room with a poor soul sitting on a bench donning a shrunken Hillary Clinton head.

Lepus the Hare and Columba the Dove are two faint constellations near the easy-to-find constellation Orion. You need a dark sky to see them.

And one more...
The longest lunar month in 2020 starts with the new moon on February 23, and concludes with the new moon on March 24. Its duration will be 29 days 17 hours and 56 minutes.

Glad Orion didn't totally lose his armpit!

science news: This piece citing a NYPost article from a legit source claims Wuhan is location of China's bio research labs. (Another source I have seen says Wuhan is one of two Chinese bioweapons labs.) SARS from last decade also emanated from China.
