And So It Goes...Bloomberg Makes His Debut On The National Stage. Bernie's Electability Skyrockets.

(@EliValley)

Well, I guess last night didn't quite work out the way the DNC and their MSM conspirators thought. Those pathetic, soulless corporate whores have been conspiring for the better part of a year to boost a carnival of centrist Chucky Cheese candidates in a revolving Flavor of the Month HS talent show contestant strategy (brought you by their sponsors, various but undisclosed VIP DC think tanks). Nah, make that since Nov 8 2016 when Queen $hillary's coronation was disposed of by a reality tv game show host, after a lackluster, entitled and hubristic campaign had to repeatedly be resuscitated and cheated on behalf of because of a wildly popular insurgent Senator from Vermont coming from out of nowhere to upturn Her Turn.

The debate did play out, however, pretty much as this NYer expected it to.

And considering that according to Mediaite it was the most watched debate in history with 20 million viewers, this is just amazing.

Folks, it looks like it's all working splendidly at the moment...

Taibbi: The Bloomberg Myth Explodes on Live TV: The Nevada debate offered voters vital information — including the exposure of Michael Bloomberg’s reputation for “electability”
(emphasis mine)

What a catastrophe Wednesday night was for Mike Bloomberg. The New York plutocrat was kicked in the teeth by Elizabeth Warren in the first minutes — she denounced him as a Trump-like “arrogant billionaire” who called women “horse-faced lesbians” — and never made it back to his feet.

Bloomberg stood in mute fury as his $400 million campaign investment went up in smoke. His contempt for democracy and sense of entitlement surpass even Donald Trump, who at least likes crowds — Bloomberg’s joyless imperiousness makes Trump seem like Robin Williams.

That Bloomberg has been touted as a potential Democratic Party savior across the top ranks of politics and media is an extraordinary indictment of that group of people.

Some endorsements were straight cash transactions, in which politicians who owe their careers to Bloomberg’s largess repaid him with whatever compliments they could muster. How much does a man who radiates impatience with the idea of having to pretend to equal status with anyone have to spend to get someone to say something nice?

Then he lists a few of the numerous elected officials of whom Bloomberg has bought the endorsement, along with the contribution figures (in the millions, or chump change for the authoritarian asshole worth $60 billion. First, a video graph to illustrate the sheer criminal enormity of this asshole's earnings takings)

That’s fine. If you give a politician $2 million or $4 million, it must be expected that he or she will say you approximate a human being.

But how does New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman excuse writing “Paging Michael Bloomberg”? (Well, Bloomberg philanthropies donated to Planet Word, “the museum my wife is building,” says Friedman, so there’s that.) How about Jonathan Chait at New York, who wrote, “Winning the election is starting to look hard. How about buying it instead?” Or John Ellis in The Washington Post, who declared Bloomberg the “dream candidate”?

Far from showing “toughness,” Bloomberg on Wednesday wilted under attacks from his five Democratic opponents. He was unprepared throughout and seemed to be ad-libbing the most important exchanges. When Warren asked him with how many women he’d had sign non-disclosure agreements, Bloomberg muttered:

Warren: How many is that?
Bloomberg: None of them accuse me of doing anything, other than maybe s— they didn’t like a joke I told.

The answer drew groans. Any political consultant could have told Bloomberg “they didn’t like a joke I told” would go over like a dead flounder. Either Bloomberg is a lousy campaigner who doesn’t understand the need for preparation, or he thinks he doesn’t need to prepare for live performances because he’ll just buy PR elsewhere.

Both explanations bode badly for a theoretical general-election campaign against Trump, an expert at ad-libbing cruelties and generating free media in amounts exceeding even what Bloomberg can buy. If Bloomberg can’t handle being asked by Warren how many NDAs he’s had signed, just imagine when Trump offers him a box to stand on and asks him how it feels to have to spend $4 million per friend.

Bloomberg’s entire argument for office is that he’s better than Trump, but where exactly is he better? The biggest argument against a Trump presidency involves his racial attitudes. Bloomberg’s record is worse.

His defense Wednesday of stop-and-frisk — that it was a widely used policy that got “out of control” because “too many” African Americans were stopped — showed that even after all this time, he still doesn’t get the problem, i.e., that the mass-profiling policy was fundamentally discriminatory. Trump is a crude circus nationalist, but Bloomberg’s policing policies were profoundly, intellectually racist, and he proved in Nevada that his only growth has been to recognize their political inexpediency.

It would be impossible to find someone less believable as a reformer of Wall Street and an opponent of wealth inequality. Even Hillary Clinton was less of a guaranteed disaster on this issue. A vote for Bloomberg — a billionaire ex-Republican media executive, for God’s sake — would mean conceding the populist argument to Republicans again.

Trump has clear authoritarian tendencies and has wrapped his hands around autocrats, but for all the fretting about him perhaps not leaving office in 2020 if voted out, it’s Bloomberg who has already tossed term limits aside, and it’s Bloomberg who is openly trying to buy an election. There is zero evidence he will be any less of a threat to democracy or an agent for rapacious corporate interests than Trump.

Even assuming one could cross into believing that Bloomberg is somehow less revolting or dangerous than the current president — I don’t, but let’s say — Wednesday exploded the idea that he would have a superior chance at beating him than Sanders or a conventional, non-plutocrat politician like Warren or Pete Buttigieg. Bloomberg was a total zero charisma-wise, had trouble thinking on his feet, and failed to find even one issue where he sounded confident and convincing. His only distinguishing characteristic is his money, and fuck his money.

So, as I was saying folks, it may have even worked out more splendidly than I could've imagined.

First there's this:

Then we have this. Get a load of it. At today's RCP Betting Odds for the 2020 Presidential Election guess what happened?

Screen Shot 2020-02-20 at 7.47.43 PM.png

Bernie just opened up a 28pt lead over Bloomberg, as a direct result of the debate!

Only a six days ago with all the media hype swarming his campaign and his commercials drenching every conceivable tv, radio and social media market Bloomberg had closed the gap to an unsettling 5.5pts.

Bloomberg's predictable and very public collapse in front of 20 million allowed Bernie to hit the throttle hard in what can only be seen as a thorough rejection of Mike's "electability."

Of course his campaign was prepared with batteries of advertising execs, copy editors and consultants to immediately deliver a textbook brainwashing & propaganda lesson in real time (as captured by The Nation's Ken Klippenstein). Tell people what they saw, which would then be repeated by your paid pundits in the media, to form a "narrative" that bears no resemblance to reality. Keep repeating until it takes hold.
Propaganda 101.

This shifty, little, kiss-ass, motherfucking CIA-plant, Rat, whose father was a Gramsci scholar and who himself wrote a published essay praising Bernie for his conviction and authenticity. I loathe this prick so much..

This was just one in a bunch of incidents in the debate that had me seething and wanting to see blood.

This motherfucker...he's so fucking disconnected, so alienated in his own bubble, so fucking arrogant and aloof, dead inside.

Does a guy riding outside on a sanitation truck in 20degree weather "work very hard for his money"? How about someone in a fish cannery, or in construction, or picking strawberries in the blazing hot sun of Mexico? NONE of them will ever get CLOSE to a $billion.

@Mark from Queens @Mark from Queens
(raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba) actually called Nixon out by name, in the song Ohio:

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own ...

David Crosby, notable total dick, has testified that he wept while recording the song.
Several years later, moved by news footage of a visibly stricken Nixon coming out of a hospital where Mrs. Patricia Nixon was being treated for as stroke, Mr. Young revisited Nixon's humanity. Per Cameron Crowe, Rolling Stone reporter:

Neil Young is on tour. Young and his son, Zeke, are sitting on a hotel bed watching television. A news bulletin interrupts the broadcast. Pat Nixon, the wife of the disgraced former president, had suffered a stroke. The report has an announcer talking over a film clip of a distraught Richard Nixon moving through the hospital’s revolving doors. Young took it all in and after some time passed, headed for his bus in the hotel’s parking lot. There he wrote a song, “Campaigner,” and played it in concert a few hours later.

The odds are that you have never heard The Campaigner -- it was only officially released on the compilation album, Decade, and for most of the last 45 years it has not been featured in Mr. Young's concerts. This is too bad, because it is a thing of beauty, one of his most extraordinary songs, both lyrically and musically. It includes my two all-time favorite Young lyrics, both of them streams of perfect iambs, and the second an extraordinary image of the nature of political favor buying:

I hardly slept the night you wept, your secret's safe and still well-kept
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul ...

and

Roads stretch out like healthy veins and wild gift horses strain the reins,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul ...

Apparently, though, revisiting the theme in a recent interview, Mr. Young explicitly declined to grant Mr. Trump the same concession.

(I chose this particular rendition because I saw the Milwaukee show for this tour ...)

(Even if you have heard The Campaigner, you have almost certainly never heard this particular version of it, which was released only as a record-industry promo. It includes an additional entire verse! Paydirt!)

STOP THE PRESSES!
Apparently, there has been a second official release, on the 2018 live album, Songs for Judy. All my beautiful knowledge, obsoleted by the passage of time and the unending tromp tromp tromp of history.

@UntimelyRippd
I've said this before, from working in the music industry for years I've amassed a huge cd collection, most of which is on my classic Ipod, to the tune of 23k songs. And although it's like the most eclectic radio station (especially when pressing the shuffle button) I find myself now for years going straight to Neil Young specifically more than any other artist.

As a kid he was pivotal in shaking me loose from my adolescent obsession with hard rock and metal. Sure, there was plenty of rocking stuff too, but when after being introduced to him via After the Gold Rush (still my all-time favorite) and Decade, I bought Comes A Time as the first current Neil album and was opened up to something completely different. As a mischievous suburban kid playing drums in rock bands I was unprepared for the country-sounding album. More than any other music at the time I hated country the most. But I found myself lying on my bed surprised at how I liked the opening track Goin' Back and then was mesmerized by Look Out For My Love.

But yeah it was that sweeping full spectrum panoramic collection of Decade that cemented my lifelong love of him. Campaigner still stops me in my tracks, as does For The Turnstiles. I still marvel completely blown away by his prodigious output from the late 60's through the late 70's. No doubt he's one of the great songwriters of all-time. My younger sister, who happened to through osmosis of our separating bedroom wall pick up on almost all of my hard rock inclinations never got Neil Young for some reason. So it dawned on me that, as a lover of all those 70's radio hits, she just needed to see him in a different light as a songwriter who fits that mold without having so many radio hits. I said to her, "Neil Young is every bit as great of a songwriter as Carole King, though he's not often thought of in those ways" and hummed and sang a few to her. She had a little bit of an epiphany I think.

If anyone hasn't read Shakey and you're a fan, you must. Amazingly deep book about his life in music. Hippie Dream is good too, and his father Scott's book, "Neil and Me," was fun.

I've been to the three major cities in Canada: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Loved all of them. Enjoyed reading your guys' stories about small town Canada.

One of the most enchanting things I've ever seen was this live broadcast a few years ago of him playing the small theater where he want to school. The most cozy and dream-like setting. Wish I could find some video of it, can't believe there's none:

Neil Young's "Somewhere In Canada" Concert was held in Coronation Hall in Omemee, Ontario, Canada

@Mark from Queens East, stopping for a couple of weeks in Edmonton Alberta then my Canadian friend (I'm from Texas) wanted to get back on the Greyhond bus and but instead of returning to Vancouver we went south to Calgary (the Calgary Stampede was happening) for a few days then eastward on to Saskatoon and Regina Saskatchewan, and finally ending our eastward trip in Winnipeg Manitoba for a week.

I realized after being around and talking to the locals everywhere we went that I wanted no part of these places in the Winter, neither did my friend who knew all these places because he had won the Central Canadian Snooker Championship the prior year and he had gambled in all the Cities at one time or another.
So he knew where the pool action was in each place, and that's the reason we were doing the trip but apart from the gambling in the Pubs and snooker halls I discovered these were generally very different than the west coast Canadians (at least in southern BC near the border) who were like a lot of the people on the west coast in the US.
Whereas these people of Central Canada were more than just geographically the Center of Canada, they were that politically and socially. Most seemed to feel secure in their lives as they were, not the anxiety I knew in the States and Vancouver and whenever we were gambling on the pool tables and snooker tables we never got stiffed on a bet and never felt like we were in danger of possibly getting jumped and/or robbed out in the parking lot.
If we had a bad night and lost money the winners didn't crow about it and even bought us drinks and often closed the Pub with us while talking about everyday things in their lives.
Good solid people, unlike anything I'd ever known in my pool travels, and never saw again when we did a trip thru the States, including their mid-west and the South. But I was from there so I knew what to expect and told Jerry before we headed south in my van from Vancouver in the early 80's.

Looking back I think my road partner Jerry Kapchinsky felt the same way I did, which was if we were going to lose to anyone, and they'd have to play pretty well to win, I'd rather it be to these people and I never felt that way anywhere in what another Canadian friend of mine calls "The Excited States".

Well, some guy named Randy Bachman, originally from Winnipeg, manages to score a pair of tickets -- don't ask me how, eh, i'm sure they were like Willie Wonka golden tickets, eh -- but the thing is, he's got the tickets but he hasn't got a date, eh? I mean, I guess he just wasn't taking care of business or something, eh? So, what, maybe he's going to go up there to Omemee from his place in Oakville (down on the lake, eh?), and just look for some local lady, eh? (but not one of those degens from upcountry, eh!)

But then the next thing that happens is, he loses his cell phone, like he drops it in the road or something, eh?

...I didn't want to muck it up with my fraught political churn.

So I followed the breadcrumbs and went poking around and found this amazing story that shares the experience of writing a song and then watching how the song pulls everyone and everything into its orbit. Music is a mysterious thing.

Confucius once told his students that if you could decode the mystery of music, you could rule the world as if it was spinning on the palm of your hand.

This comes close.

@UntimelyRippd Randy Bachman he lives not that far from here on Saltspring Island where my daughter lived at and went to High School years ago before she moved to Vancouver Island. She tells me he has had solar panels and has been living 'off the grid' for years.
She also told me about a brunette that would later be a famous blonde on Baywatch ,Pamela Anderson who also became, and remains, a strong supporter of Julian Assange which is why I like her (I never saw any episode of Baywatch, wasn't interested).

That aside, I have about 800 albums and the 'Decades' album is one of the many Neil Young albums I have in my collection and as far as the chorus of 'even Richard Nixon has got soul' part goes I first heard it like I was hearing 'even that poisonous snake has got soul' because I hadn't heard about why Neil Young wrote it.

I assumed the implication was that the universe of politics was so utterly corrupt, even Nixon had a soul there.
Are you sure Bachman still lives in the BC place? I searched around a bit before I wrote that, and I found a source that said he's living in Oakville Ontario now. Seems like he has some kind of nationwide radio show, or maybe it's a TV show, I don't know.
He and Burton Cummings were one of the classic rock and roll songwriting duos, sort of Canada's answer to Lennon/McCartney. Plutes already posted a clip of Bachman discussing the genesis of American Woman. Here is a clip where the two of them talk about writing These Eyes, back when Cummings was still living at home with his Mom. Regrettably, the clip doesn't include Bachman explaining where/when he (not Cummings) came up with the song's signature piano riff, but there are lots of other youtube videos where he tells that part of the story.

@UntimelyRippd maybe I'm wrong but there are people that own property there but don't live there on a regular basis (William Shatner is another)and my daughter hasn't lived there for at least fifteen years. However the reason I believe he still owns it is because when a major storm hit a couple of years ago power was off everywhere on the islands, except on his property. Maybe someone else was living there at the time.

The other wood in the home was also sourced locally. There are plants and grasses growing on the roof to add insulation. When that douche nozzle said that stop and frisk was stopped after a benevolent listening tour of understanding (and lest I forget to mention that Doomberg said he spoke with "clergy" and "business" people - ie. the right kind of people of colour, the respectable, not-poor kind). Um... his ass was handed to him when activists and organizers stood up and stop and frisk was challenged in court and found unconstitutional.

I wanted to kick him through a wall when he so casually said that he has apologized and WHY CAN'T WE MOVE ON!!! So the fuck what that he apologized? That doesn't bring back dead kids or save grieving families or repair trauma.

What was really shocking, even for someone as cynical as I am, was how complely unprepared he was, as if the idea that he might be taken to task on this had never entered his mind. I mean, this was only all over the news in the week leaking up. I think even his own network covered it!

the DNC would be foolish to take the win from him. It's beyond obvious that he is the winner of the DP primary and if democrats dare let the super delegates choose for us it will literally be the end of their party. It has also been obvious that they have kept trying to promote someone else besides Bernie and everyone of them has been rejected.

ByeDone was their front runner even before he entered the race. Innnt..down he went. As did Kambama, Beto, Booker and every other propped up front runner. Now warren is backtracking on super PACs and other issues because she is failing and the only person still standing is Bernie.

Next we saw the DNC change their rules to let Bloomberg into their debates while still keeping Tulsi out of them. And Bloomberg got knocked out in the first round. Kabam!

But unfortunately we know democrats would be fine if Trump wins a second term. But what happens after that? Good luck getting another democrat in the presidency again. You need voters for that to happen.

It belongs in the same trashcan as the "unity" stuff. The point of having a political campaign is to work out issues, and to allow the people to hear out opposing sides in all truth and honesty so they can figure out what's right, what's wrong, and what needs a bit of work. So, yeah, that's going to be "polarizing," and it will seriously disrupt "unity." The idea that we're going to hurry up to get everyone on the same side REGARDLESS of whether or not "unity" on that side offers any benefits to the great multitudes of people is what has screwed up politics for the past forty years.

Yeah, let's all be "united" behind the billionaires, and don't talk smack about them because that would be "polarizing." Uh-huh.

She made it pretty clear when she made her 2016 endorsement. She's tried to ride Bernie's tailwind this time around, but as soon as TPTB disaproved, she chucked all that overboard. They keep giving her the benefit of the doubt and she's going to keep sticking the knive in.

Not sayng they should go negative on Warren. I doubt that would do any good. But how about they just ignore her? Let her flounder. Praising her only gives her another opening to go at Bernie again when she realizes TPTB aren't going to apporve of the way she talked to Bloomberg. She's not going to come around to acting right and she's proved beyond any doubt she shouldn't be trusted as an ally.

@Dr. John Carpenter @Dr. John Carpenter

I wish they'd get the hint about Warren.

It's about not angering Liz's supporters as they watch her campaign collapse.

Liz is hoping the Bernie campaign bites on her taunting, so she can then play the victim.

Instead they kill her with kindness.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

@humphrey at people but wants to get stuff done. What a joke. She sure loves yelling at all those dastardly bankers, but when it comes time to "get something done" about them she rolls right on over, protesting a bit of course to keep her "credibility" as a "fighter" while knowing full well none of what she proposes has a chance in hell of getting done. God I cannot stand her anymore, so Hillary-esque it is painful to watch.

But unfortunately we know democrats would be fine if Trump wins a second term. But what happens after that? Good luck getting another democrat in the presidency again. You need voters for that to happen.

The Obama years were horrible for most of us but people refuse to acknowledge that. I get a kick every time someone tries to hang something bad on Trump only to see that Obama did it first.

Is it great yet?

@Jen I talked to my old boss, a man I consider a mentor, who is of course a Democrat. When I told him I did NOT vote for Hillary and never would, he said I sounded just like my Tea Party Republican parents... When I pointed out though just what Obama did with those 8 years, bailing out the banks while people lost homes, jobs, savings which he did NOTHING about, he got silent for a minute and then had to agree with me. And when I pointed out just how badly Hillary herself did in her campaign, and yes, those pesky emails showing blatant corruption and pushing the media to cover Trump relentlessly, he had to agree there too. But I would bet good money that today he too is all in for seeing Bernie go down thinking, or actually not bothering to really think at all, that anyone who can beat Trump is the way to go and that Bernie is too far left. He too has been brainwashed and while I would love to think my short conversation with him made a dent I highly doubt it - the propaganda is simply too thick now, and the fear ginned up by that Orange buffoon in the White Hut has done its job. Right wing talking points, such an easy pejorative to hurl about when one doesn't want to see the detail behind it. The decades of divide and conquer ala Faux Noise and CNN have done the job very, very well and most Americans refuse to see it. And they get very pissed off at those of us who point it out.

what's going on, this time. I've been shouting it - they're gonna steal the nomination from Bernie - from THE PEOPLE! At least they are up front about it, knowing full well, yet being in denial, it will destroy the dimwit party.

With or without Sanders, they will have to go down and the people will have to rise up. We're surely 1984-DONE, otherwise.

But still I worry. Mass propaganda works. I would be especially worried if Bloomberg does not attend a few debates because they are such train wrecks--which leaves open for his money to work its magic.

And don't forget the Russians. They are looking at upping the ante by buying $175,000 of FB ads, of which half will not mention any candidates and will be posted after the election. Faceless intelligence officials are claiming that Putin favors Bernie. Bernie's election is in the bag.

the ones I could find, given that there used to be hundreds online from independent sources and now mostly it's corporate media--and I was remembering how Bloomberg went after Occupy. Putting black people up against the wall and cracking the skulls of the working class. Awesome, Mike.
