It is so very funny that there are those that say my vote counts, but at the same time they say I am wasting my time voting for Bernie. So many people (particularly Neoliberal Democrats) are so very schizoid.
Human survival is in the balance and The Green New Deal is an important policy step that hopefully will lead to enactment of many changes so earthbounds, formerly humans, can return to the earth.
The only earth humans have ever lived in can be called the Critical Zone. That is a region a couple miles down and a couple miles up into the atmosphere. The onion skin is where life exists.
This comment is to champion Bernie as the best shot at the Green New Deal because the powerful interests are tied to resource extraction. In addition, players are entering the stage, water, air, ice, and their champions like Water Protectors.
I have found insights from the work of a Frenchman Bruno Latour and the many people from several disciplines that he has worked with over the decades.
The tie to Mimi is that he is putting on a narrative exhibit in Germany in 2020 and she may want to see it. My wife and I will tie a visit to the exhibit to a cruise in Europe.
I will provide some information on Bruno and two pieces on the exhibit.
First a 5 minute video where he explains the connection between science, art and politics and how the characters like citizen and state were begun in The Enlightenment and how important Art is to help people become sensitive to the earth.
As everybody learned at school, each time the position of the Earth in the
cosmos is modified, a revolution in social order ensues. Remember the Galileo
affair. When scientists made the Earth move around the sun, the whole fabric of
society felt under attack. Today, again, four centuries later, the role and the
position of the Earth is being revolutionized by new sciences: it appears that
human behavior has pushed the Earth to react in unexpected ways. And once
again, the whole organization of society is being subverted. Shake the cosmic
order and the order of politics will be shaken as well.
Because of this crisis in cosmic and social order, people are disoriented. Those
who, until recently, were still moving toward the promise of globalization and
indefinite development, suddenly realized that there is no Earth compatible with
the promises of globalization. A total disconnect is now visible between the
horizon of the Globe and the real position of the Earth. Many of us feel puzzled,
suspended, arrested, betrayed. It is as if we no longer know on which land we
reside, to which period we belong, and what sort of person we should be. What
has led us to this impasse? Who is responsible for this betrayal? Where are we
supposed to land? What sort of citizen should we try to be?
Hence the extraordinary return, everywhere at the same time, of the questions
of what sort of people inhabit what sort of soil. Just at the moment when it becomes
clear that the sovereignty of Nation States is inadequate to deal with the crisis,
many people are clamoring for a return to the safety and protection of secure
borders, to the point that a conservative revolution threatens to swallow the
fragile fabric of liberal institutions. Others are still waiting for a restart of
globalization. Some wish to accelerate the pace of modernization. Many others
have already moved to different ways of inhabiting the Earth.

and here is what looks like the first chapter on the book that will be published along with the exhibit. This if the fourth exhibit like this in Germany and the first three books were published by MIT press. The last one had over 60 different authors from many disciplines so my hunch is that it will be another big book of the many notable people who have participated in the project of learning to be responsible for the earth.
Hence, this piece is an introduction to the other papers which will be in the final book as well as an overview of the exhibit.

Well, not quite! And that’s the circumstance this book tries to present to the
inquiring reader: it seems that there has been in the past some misinterpretation
over what it means to be earthly. If you believe it means “practical”, “mundane”,
“secular”, “material” or even “materialist”, you’re in for a surprise.
If members of modern industrial societies prided themselves on being “down
to earth”, “rational”, “objective” and above all “realist”, they seem to suddenly
discover that they need an Earth to continue to live — and live well(Stengers, this
volume). Should they not have carefully surveyed the span, size and location of
the very land inside which they were supposed to reside and spread? Is not
surveying and mapping what they had been doing when they engaged for
centuries in what they still celebrate as the “age of great discoveries”? How odd
that, after having assembled so many maps of so many foreign lands, collating so
many views from so many landscapes, drawing so many versions of what they
called “the Globe”, they now appear taken aback by the novelty of this newly .....
