It's going to take people waking the f'ck up and see how they have been manipulated into supporting McCarthyism.

Clinton fuels new 'red scare' with political attacks against Gabbard

"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty." Journalist Edward Murrow said those words 65 years ago, responding to Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy and his accusations of Americans being "Russian stooges" and "fellow travelers." Murrow declared that, despite the best efforts of political opportunists, "We will not walk in fear, one of another."

Those words came to mind after former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused current Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard of being a "Russian asset" in the 2020 election. It seems there is a communist stooge behind every poll, as people such as Clinton make support for the establishment a loyalty test.

Long ago, I wrote about how the Russia investigation was spurring a new type of "red scare" as critics denounced Donald Trump, Republican members of Congress and commentators as Russian apologists or Kremlin assets. It was not enough that most of us agreed that Russian intervention in the 2016 election was worthy of investigation. It did not matter that special counsel Robert Mueller determined that no one in the Trump campaign knowingly worked with Russian agents.

It does not matter that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic leaders reportedly have said they do not want to impeach Trump on Russian conspiracy claims, a curious thing, given their years of claiming clear proof of such crimes. It also does not matter that the United States has a long history of intervening in foreign elections or that we have regularly hacked the emails of foreign foes as well as close allies such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel. To even utter such facts is to find oneself on the feared "fellow travelers" list.

....
These comments by Clinton seem right out of the infamous Republican National Convention speech by McCarthy in 1952, in which he painted a widening group of Americans as Russian assets. He declared, "Our job as Americans and as Republicans is to dislodge the traitors from every place where they have been sent to do their traitorous work." It is an irresistible temptation to portray opponents as Russian cutouts or conspirators, so perhaps it was only a matter of time before accusations of Russian conspiracy moved from Republican to Democratic rivals.

The Clinton aversion to Russia appears to be an acquired distaste. Her campaign spent a massive amount of money seeking dirt on Trump from foreign sources, including Russian intelligence assets, in 2016. The Clinton campaign denied any involvement in the creation of the Christopher Steele dossier that the Obama administration used to secure a secret surveillance warrant against Trump associates. The campaign hid its payments to the opposition research firm Fusion GPS as "legal fees" among the millions of dollars paid to its law firm.

Clinton lawyer Marc Elias vigorously denied to The New York Times that the campaign funded the dossier. Reporters proved that was false, with journalist Maggie Haberman noting, "Folks involved in funding this lied about it, and with sanctimony, for a year." Even when Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta was questioned by Congress, he denied any contractual agreement with Fusion GPS as Elias sat beside him.

The question is whether voters again will be duped, not by the Russians but by our own American politicians here at home. Much has changed since 1954, when attorney Joseph Welch exposed McCarthy with his famous inquiry, "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" One thing is abundantly clear in government today. There is no room for decency in our duopoly of power.

I left a lot out cuz of fair use so read this at the source. It's ridiculous how so many people who are mainly Hillary supporters jumped on the red scare wagon after growing up hearing about the original red scare. Boy I'm sure they have made their parents proud.

@snoopydawg

For those of us who have long opposed the hold of the two major parties over our government, the Clinton attack is right on schedule. Every election, the establishment tells voters they have no alternative but to choose the lesser of two evils offered by this duopoly. A vote for a third-party candidate is portrayed as supporting the other party.

No one owes someone their vote. You want it? Earn it, but don't just spout some hopey changy crap and think you're done. Actions are what I'm looking at.

I get that the candidates are hesitant to say anything; I'm not saying I support their lack of backing Tulsi, just that I understand not wanting to risk the attention. It should be the press knocking down Clinton's doors, demanding an explanation, calling her out for this ridiculous rumour-mongering (particularly inappropriate from a former SoS), and going to bat for Tulsi. That said, I believe any response from the other candidates should include "I invite Hillary Clinton to substantiate her claim and offer proof."

As for Omnishambles Clinton, can this plague SIT DOWN and shut. The. Fuck. Up. Remember when she couldn't stop tooting her own unity horn, and is now accusing people of this?! This ghoul of politics past never ceases to enrage me with her attention-seeking stunts.

@Le Frog @Le Frog yeah, just a wee bit.

Rather cowardly of many of them, imo, the ones hiding from making comment so far. This one doesn't take hours and days of deep thinking and consultation with staff. 15 minutes to compose an official response strongly condemning Hillary's McCarthyite charges; 5 minutes if using Twitter.

So far only Marianne, Yang and Beto have passed the moral leadership test. One candidate, the favorite of 93% of the posters here, is notably silent. Biden, Bootajudge and Liz also.

It will be interesting to see how some of the cheerleaders for Bernie in the media spin his silence. I'm thinking Jimmy Dore, Jordan Chariton and Krystal Ball in particular, all of whom aren't shy about loudly calling out the deficiencies in other candidates. For the moment I'm sure they are hoping everyone will focus on his big rally yesterday and the AOC endorsement and not bother them to comment about that other thing as it works its way through the news cycle and eventually fades away.

Edit: Pete this morning has now spoken out generally condemning or disagreeing with Hillary's charges as not being backed by evidence. So that makes 4 candidates who've stepped up, though Pete just barely.

If that's not so, then JTC might want to let me know.

fwiw,

1. I gave a lot (for me)of money to Bernie in 2016.
2. Bought and wore his t-shirt, made phone calls, and canvassed door-to-door.
3. Went to his first rally in our state.
4. Got "timeouts" on Kos for refusing to shut up about him. That's why I came here.
5. Voted for Bernie in our primary.

Simply put, I was a huge Bernie fan in 2016 and would vote for him in 2020.
But when he falls short, I will speak up. (if permitted)

Don't think it is wrong to point out that TG has been the one to talk about the way the Clinton machine cheated Bernie. Stuck her neck way out for him in 2016 when it counted.

Since you went to the trouble of finding JtC quote-

Brock spent $1 million on getting people to go on websites to tell people that they were wrong about their opinions on Hillary. BTW. I read that this was borderline election fraud. But laundering $84 million through the DNC was definitely election fraud and so far she has skated. A face-to-face confrontation between Hillary Clinton and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard set for next Friday was averted when Clinton backed out of the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, DC.

Clinton aides cited a scheduling conflict when she announced her withdrawal from a speaking slot at the annual event. One insider told Slate that Clinton dropped out to protest the inclusion of former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson on the schedule.

But Gabbard is on the bill, too — and Clinton’s pull-out came just hours after the former Secretary of State on Friday accused the Hawaii Democrat of being the “favorite of the Russians” on a podcast.

The Hillary crowd has argued that the Russians were able to move just enough votes to make her lose. And what does she do? Michael Tracey who follows Tulsi said that the majority of her supporters are democrats as he has attended her rallies, talked to people, consulted contributors list, etc. Clinton alienated supporters of a candidate who is polling 2%-6% of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY base.

Hillary is trying to insert herself into the primaries. I believe this attack is just a setup to go after Bernie, and open up the corporate media to ask if Bernie is a Russian asset.
