California Ending Use of For-Profit Private Prisons
Governor Gavin Newsom, for all his faults, signed a great bill yesterday ending California's use of for-profit, private prisons.
For (true) Progressives and left types out there, this is a huge win that we just don't see enough of. This includes the use of federal private prisons (California is basically making private prisons illegal in the state), and so includes some privately run ICE prisons in the state--although lawsuits are in the works already that say California can't tell the federal government what to do.
This also includes a stipulation that the state and local authorities cannot send inmates to private prisons outside of the state. So, it is pretty well rounded as a new law.
For context, Illinois has already passed a similar law. New Mexico and Minnesota have similar bills routing in their legislatures.
Just thought I'd share something positive going on that we can celebrate today! This is also an indication that Gov. Newsom isn't the complete corporatist he is sometimes feared to be.

Newsome is not a "complete" corporatist
what I think he is is a complete opportunist with excellent instincts. Barring getting arrested by the quisling democrats after their coup he'll be a frontrunner in 2024.
On to Biden since 1973
This is excellent news
And you have to celebrate that regardless from whence it comes (even if it's Tucker Carlson) because it's a rare creature that doesn't appear nearly often enough.

wonderful news
so he's more than just a pretty (corporate) face?

Well
To my mind, he pretty much single-handedly started the legalizing gay marriage ball rolling as mayor of San Francisco--so I give him a lot of personal credit for that.
I'm sure he saw it as an opportunity--he's very ambitious. But, it was the right thing to do, and he didn't have to do it.
This is important, politics aside.
We think about the graft of corporations giving food that is inedible, we think about lack of medical care, but we do not necessarily thing about escapes.
State prison systems serve awful food, offer horrid medical care, but prison escapes are rare.
I recently met a woman doing some land title research who's Mom was a private security guard.
A prisoner escaped, tortured that guard, and the guard had to pay her own medical expenses, had to pay her own way back from Mexico to Texas.
State prisons are horrible.
Private prisons are worse.

I believe the Constitution should forbid ANY
"long-term" (i.e., more than a few days) involuntary detention of anyone for any reason (including, e.g., mental health issues) in any facility that is not owned, operated, and staffed by government.

I agree
He had escaped from other private prisons. This was his third or forth private prison escape.
