While Liz was still a Republican

As I'm sure most of you already know, Liz Warren once was a diehard conservative.

"Harry, one of Warren’s best friends in high school, distinctly remembers Warren being an “ice-cold Republican,” as she would sometimes tease her. (Warren joked back that Harry had “socialist” friends.)"

But while Liz was still a Republican:

just demonstrates the rightward drift of the "Democratic" Party over the last few decades.

Rockefeller Republicans more like.

Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.

@Bollox Ref I don’t think her POV has ever changed. I think she’s even said the Republicans moved too far right and the Dems lined up better with her beliefs. I believe people can change, but Warren’s story is that the parties changed, not her.

Warren didn't become a democrat, democrats became republicans.

@Bollox Ref I am not as negative on Warren as many at this site, but I remember thinking when she began to come to prominence that what passed for progressive was once just middle of the road good government politics (regulated capitalism, moderate welfare state, government investment in infrastructure and education, higher income tax rates, fairly aggressive foreign policy). I might quibble and say she is more of an Eisenhower Republican than a Rockefeller Republican, because she is harder on wealth, but I agree that the parties have moved way more than Warren.

with an ample dash of fascism thrown in.

Actually, I think Rockefeller Republicans may have been better.

other candidate was saying and doing in HS is going to matter to about a handful of voters, mostly consisting of a tiny few posting on this site. She's not my first or second choice, but is probably my third, although I don't see a great deal of difference between her and Kirsten Gillibrand and KG would be more electable if she weren't struggling to be nominatable. Both have missed a large opening to carve out some impressive progressive positions in FP, but alas foreign doesn't seem to matter in this election cycle.

I see Liz as BernieLite, with Sanders providing much of the inspiration for her domestic proposals, all of which is still better than a handful of other candidates who are trying to be ObamaLite or Hillary 2.0.

As for the rightward drift of both parties, for Rs it started in 1980 with Reagan, after an earlier failed attempt by Rs to show their true extremist stripes with Goldwater in '64 and some authoritarian tendencies from Nixon. After the 1980 election debacle where many liberal Ds were ousted from office, the party during the 80s began dipping their toes into a more corporate-friendly posture, starting with the New Dems/Atari Dems of the mid-80s, seeking a way to become more electable by being less down-the-line liberal, or actually running away from the latter label. During this period, the remaining major liberal leaders were weak and uncertain, as with Dukakis, and the grassroots left was not strong and not growing and not much of an influence in the party.

Bill Clinton was only a part of this Dem re-positioning to the right process, although an important voice, and I suspect it was mostly about electability rather than having his heart with Wall St. During his presidency, the first term, there were some insider reports that he was lamenting how his admin was looking like the third term of Eisenhower, which supposedly wasn't what he'd intended in running for president. But he enabled it, and the second term domestic policy-wise was largely more moderate R governance.

The fact that BC has had to defensively explain or apologize for some of his policies in the 90s in recent times suggests the party's rightward drift has stopped and that we may be seeing some drift back to its liberal traditions. The strong polling showings of Bernie and Liz tend to reflect this positive trend.

Warren was in her 40s when she left the Republican Party in the 1990s. Either she's morally bankrupt and/or she has the political instincts of a turnip. I knew exactly what the Republicans were when I was 14 and they re-elected Reagan. Any full grown adult who watched these suited sociopaths laugh at AIDS patients and stuck with the party for another decade is a fuckin monster.

Tuesday was the 28th anniversary of my brother's absolutely horrible death from AIDS and in just a few more years here will have been dead longer than he was alive. There is no way that I can separate his death from the cruel and depraved indifference from people in the Reagan administration and religious leaders who thought gays were better off dead and especially if they had AIDS. The one thing that helps is knowing that Reagan lost his f'cking mind before he died just like my brother did.

fuckin monster is exactly what they were and anyone that stayed in the GOP knowing what they were not doing to help out Americans were just as big of ghouls as those that ignored them.

@snoopydawg

And so sorry that sympathy is all I have to offer.

One of my closest friends also lost her brother. I lost a friend who was like a brother, along with so many friends and acquaintances, all of them so young. I still feel a weird mix of PTSD and survivor's guilt about that time.

@Reverend Jane Ignatowski

The epidemic touched so many people and I agree with you that many of us have a touch of PTSD from it. Watching helplessly as people begged Reagan to do something about it. I was involved with Act Up and worked in a medical field that saw lots of young men who had it and were going blind. The doctor I worked with came up with a treatment to stop it from happening.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend too. And for anyone else here that was touched by this.
