JUST IN: Speaker Pelosi says "we believe the president of the United States is engaged in a cover up" by stonewalling testimony for ongoing congressional investigations. pic.twitter.com/7ILMb95vZM

So Nancy says that "the president is engaged in a coverup and she knows that she has all the power to do something about it. But ask her how she feels about impeachment and here's her answer.
Comments
Trump just threatened to nuke Iran,
so completely out of bounds (illegal, insane, illogical) it's hard to describe, and this is what that fool and the democratic party want to focus on. This political system is completely gone.
I thought I glimptsed something
What do I know.

You did
I posted something about this in gjohnsit essay. Joe posted an article on this too in the EBs.
There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?
Harris is unburdened of speaking going forward.
Just to be clear,
Well...
If the world was ever sane, we left that condition behind long ago.
Yeah, no kidding.
Something like that would have been serious as little as 11 years ago.
But hey, Hillary Clinton threatened to nuke Russia and China in a campaign speech, so I guess it's all good.
Actually, the horrible thing is that the current crop of bastards are actually crazier than Strangelove.

Examples of past presidents being above the law
Nader nails it in this article
What and Who Gave Us Trump?
There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?
Harris is unburdened of speaking going forward.
Goes back farther than Nader thinks
Or doesn't he recall that Reagan was elected despite being a divorced adulterer, and proceeded to figurehead the Iran-Contra scandal (and sweep it under the rug with "I don't remember")?
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
That's exactly the truth they're trying to hide
by focusing on Trump; the key here is to remove Trump from his context and to wipe out remembrance of the past.

Of course it is
But then that's what makes this so silly. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to impeach him, but that will never happen.
But here's Nancy saying that he is engaged in a coverup whilst still not doing anything about it. Looking into his taxes might show how much he's making through his presidency.

Earned Less
According to his 2018 financial disclosure, his income has fallen. See: Trump's Financial Disclosure Shows Declined Earnings Last Year. So much for impeaching him under the Emoluments Clause.
If a portion of his income . . .
But impeachment will never be sustained by the senate. The Democrats would do far better developing a healthcare plan, an infrastructure plan and tax reform that did real good for ordinary Americans and, somehow, persuading them that the Democrats would actually enact them into law.
What!?!?
You want Democrats to do actual work for the people?
Emoluments
The Emoluments Clause has never been reviewed by a major court or been the subject of a Supreme Court case. Market value payments for services rendered commonly and frequently on the open market is not an emolument in Constitutional terms. And reduced revenue is prima facie evidence that Trump isn't financially benefiting from his presidency. Finally, if he were receiving emoluments that fell under the Clause, he need only ask Congress for permission to keep them like Benjamin Franklin did for his diamond snuff box from France.
However, as you noted, the Senate won't vote to convict even if impeachment is attempted by Democrats in the House.
Yep.
That's why I wouldn't get on board with their stupid Resistance. They are a bunch of frauds and so is it.

I think it’s clear
They don’t want to actually punish criminal behavior. They just want to embarrass Trump. Same as all the “impeach Obama” people and same reason impeachment of W was off the table. It’s the usual kabuki. It’d be interesting if one of the usual news readers called them on it, but they’re all in the show so I don’t see that ever happening.
Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.
Well Nancy just demonstrated yesterday once again
that Democrats don't have ANY negotiation skills or smarts about how to go about dealing with hard liners. Obama show the same lack of skills in dealing with the GOP while he was President.
The morning of the scheduled meeting with Trump, she decides to make a statement about him being guilty of a cover-up, etc. She and Schumer then go merrily over to the White House and expect to have a talk with Trump on infrastructure??? My spouse, who hates Trump, but has a job based on the skills of negotiation said, "Well I don't blame Trump for walking out. Don't the Dems have any smarts about negotiation? You don't say nasty things about someone in public right before you walk into a room to work with them."
Oh and as far as the "above the law" statement.... where was Nancy when Hillary was violating every regulation and law in the State Dept. with her email system? Where was Nancy when Obama was visibly covering up for Hillary and pooh-poohing the seriousness of what she did? The Dems, in their true hypocritical form also just went after Betsy DeVos for having about 100 of her government emails go out from personal accounts.
Pelosi is getting worse by the day. We will end up being mired down in impeachment hearings rather than getting anything done with the power given to the Dems in the mid-terms. Trump will survive the Senate hearings OR we'll get even crazier Pence on the throne.
Great job, Nancy.... maybe Kos will send you more roses.

Skill or strategy?
I think it is a strategy. If you act stupid and helpless, people quit blaming you and are twice as likely to do it themselves. Why do they have the acumen to steal votes, buy the FBI, rig the primary, protect the banks, create wars, become rich in office, keep progressives solidly defeated, and yet always manage to lose to the GOP on everything?

In the script
Yes, it's by design. You don't go to a Harlem Globetrotters game and expect to see the Washington Generals win.
Exactly!
It is a major fallacy to assume Nancy Pelosi wants the same results we do, e.g. her efforts to collude with Trump on a scheme to lower prices on a few drugs slightly while paralyzing real reform for at least a decade.
ALWAYS remember that Nancy and Chuck want that nickel in the pocket of the old jeans in the back of your drawer because they don't fit anymore to be grabbed for the 1% as much as Donald and Mitch.
Except George W. Bush.
And Dick Cheney, and Karl Rove. And the Keating 5. And Caspar Weinburger, and Ronald Reagan, and Ollie North and Scooter Libby (getting indicted and then getting pardoned by the same Administration you did dirty work for still counts as being "above the law.") Oh, and whoever fucked up, intentionally or not, the air response to the 9/11 hijackers. And Hillary Clinton, John Podesta, and Robbie Mook. And that NY elections worker who purged over 100,000 Brooklynites from the voting rolls during the 2016 Democratic primary. And the bastards who set up the torture program at Abu Graib (but who am I kidding, international law isn't really law, right?) Oh, and all of Wall Street, because, as I think Eric Holder said to a Senate committee, it's difficult to investigate and prosecute Wall St because it might have a deleterious effect on our economy.
C'mon, you all know the words!
Talk to kids around the world, it might go a little bit something like this!

It is like some reality show with spoiled middle schoolers.
When Trump has met with Putin, the reaction afterwards is one of "why didn't you attack and insult the s.o.b.in front of everybody? In fact, why are you talking to Putin?" Otherwise, you are a Putin lackey or puppet. It is like: "Hey, nobody talk to Putie. I don't like him. He is a bad man!" (said in the voices of Family Guy characters) In this way, Pelosi is following the same pattern of insulting disengagement.
It is the same with Bernie getting attacked for have a Fox town hall meeting. There is a type of guilt by association permeates dialogue which demands outward signalling of scorn and hatred and avoidance.
In the case of Russia, this take on "negotiations" is absolutely deadly. Well, actually diplomacy with Russia has been criminalized by the media and democrats. How exactly is Bernie going to talk with the Russians when he has dived deep into the pool of Russian xenophobia? His first political requirement will be to insult and attack Putin to his face.
This contrasts with how Putin approaches negotiations and his general attitude. Here is a short clip of Putin answering the questions of German reporters on whether he is a friend or a foe at the 50 second mark roughly.
Compare and contrast the emotionalism of American leaders as they deal with international relationships.

What a laugh.
I can think of a few that are, such as your "Impeachment is off the table" Bush.
Well, I think Dershowitz has it right.

The Dems (including Bernie) have gone nuts. There's plenty to go after Trump on-but Russia collusion & obstruction aren't it. Pelosi's resistance to the impeachment mob is one of the few things she got right IMHO.
Trump is very vunerable on policy but not this crap. But the Dem's don't do policy these days I guess.

And the solution of a commission is a not unsurprising one for someone acting as unofficial defense counsel who doesn't want the issues fully discovered and addressed. I'm sure he would want a Lee Hamilton or Alan Simpson to head that one.
What do you do when you have a problem, or multiple ones? Lyndon Johnson was very familiar with this situation. Call for a commission to study it. Preferably one of those toothless, designed-to-fail/cover-up "bipartisan" ones.
Create a task force.
A common delaying tactic that I've seen used both for good and ill.
