The UK Peoples' Budget was put up and passed by the UK's "liberal government" led by Lloyd George and his trusty sidekick, Winnie Churchill. It levied both material property taxes and progressive income taxes on the UK's wealthy. The land taxes and taxes on the increase in land's value when it changed hands were based on the ideas of Henry George of the US. The funds so raised were to be used to provide various social welfare benefits for the poor. Lloyd George declared that:
This is a war Budget. It is for raising money to wage implacable warfare against poverty and squalidness. I cannot help hoping and believing that before this generation has passed away, we shall have advanced a great step towards that good time, when poverty, and the wretchedness and human degradation which always follows in its camp, will be as remote to the people of this country as the wolves which once infested its forests.

Omigosh. That is one of the most beautiful photos of the human
body that I have ever seen--and she's not even naked! (Image is "Swan lake", Ballets Russes, from the National Library of Australia.) So perfectly positioned, such compelling chiaroscuro! Thank you, el. You always serve us such yummy things and thoughts.
And if you ever get the chance, to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance, like no one is watching. Happy Tutu Day to you and you and you, and to you, too, too!

Good morning HAW, thanks for reading and for the Womack.
Yes, dance the night away. The Dervishes, they were on to something. In my youth I once danced right out of an open ground floor bay window (one of the kind that doubles as a door). Stone cold sober, too. I was a bit crazy in those days.
Glad you liked the pic and the OT.
Have a great one.

Good morning skod, thanks for reading. I hear that it is a
great experience for the participant once one is sufficiently experienced at it. I confess to being seriously and shamefully ignorant of Sufism and Rumi, but also feel it is a bit late in life for me to try to correct that oversight, I've plenty else on my plate as it is.
Have a great one.

el, I've never seen an OP of yours I didn't enjoy greatly.
And I love your sense of humor, which you sometimes exhibit when you review the notable events of the date. Wry, dry, and delicious!
Thank you, glad you like them.

Good morning
Hope all is well with all of you.
In a couple of weeks we play a dance for the Audubon mountain workshop. We've been playing that dance for 40 years. Usually they have a telescope set up. One year they had a bat detector that used their sonar sounds to identify even the species of bat and did counts.
Here's a dance at the Folk school in Brasstown NC https://www.folkschool.org/

Happy dancing!

Good morning Lookout. How did I forget that wonderful
quote from Emma and the great idea behind it. A real life superhero. I feel like a dolt. Do enjoy your dance party, square dance is an interesting phenomena and was quite a major fad for a while there. My folks were big into it. Somebody tried to teach it at school, every few years times, but it never caught on. Good thing for me, I'm not much of a structure kind of guy.
Have a great one.

it's very popular in portland

Contra dance is more common than squares. And while it is structured, it is a cooperative rather than competitive activity...and builds community. It was the music that drew me into it about 50 years ago.

Another good one, e.l.
I'm listening to the Dead with new ears today after having read Rock Scully's book yesterday.
He writes about "the Bobby Problem," i.e. Weir "noodling", not playing solid rhythm, because he didn't understand the difference between acoustic and electric with respect to attack. Scully claims that the addition of the second drummer was necessary since someone had to hold down the beat.
We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
Good mroning Az, thanks and thanks for reading. I listen to
the dead with new ears frequently, just picking up on something else. Bobby was Bobby, problem and blessing both but an integral part of what they were.

about magi's blog - quick survey (a friend just threw this together; now I have to figure out how to translate it to html, or not...)
1. mass extinction from global warming
2. people ignoring the fact that it is happening

Ahhh, what's to dread. Reality is what it is, face it, fight it
run if you must, but dread is nothing useful. We're getting there, I think we'll make it as far as the airport at any rate.

agree,
but I thinks it is a real shock to people as the realize the reality of the situation. it's like the stages of grief.

A Russian choreographer
Once called Diana Vishneva's fluidity "like watching milk poured into space".
I first saw Ms. Vishneva dance back in 2005 in a performance of Swan Lake for the ABT. Her dying swan was mesmerizing. So moved by her performance, I cried.
Here's a video of Diana Vishneva performing a piece off the ballet stage which I found very innovative and beautiful.

Thanks EL for the great OT! I enjoyed the performances.

The clip on Ms. Vishneva was really something to watch,
and I don't even like ballet. Thanks again.

Good evening Shah. Thanks for the news and link, not to
mention that wonderful edit. Of course, he might be waiting to make sure that Her Royal Clinton doesn't take another shot at it.

What a sad commentary
That someone who was remembered for fighting for such a noble cause, cynically profits on his reputation and becomes a rank political sellout.
