Thanks You Markos

I know I haven't said this enough, but thank you Markos

Normally it takes years to build up a large membership list for a blog.
Even after years of hard work you will still end up with a membership list sprinkled with, oh let's say, unpleasant people.

That's what C99P had to look forward to.

And then you decided to that you didn't want hundreds of excellent, thought-provoking writers on your site working for free.
As a businessman I can see why you wouldn't want talented people doing your work for you without compensation of any kind.
Who would? Amirite!

Instead you decided that you preferred sycophants. Or if not sycophants, then people who would learn to at least STFU and Fall Into Line.
I get it, I really do. Talented people say the most annoying things sometimes.
They tend to go on and on about "justice" and "equality". Boo Hoo!
They also think they deserve to be treated with respect. Jeeesh! If you want respect you buy it. Everyone knows that.

So Suck on this Big 'ol Banhammer!

Now, instead of having to wait years and years to build up a large membership of talented writers, C99P suddenly has hundreds to choose from and we didn't even have to pick up a bunch of trolls in the process, like most blogs do.
Basically, C99P just went from Step 3 to Step 9 without the painful evolution, and it's all because you are a complete and total dipshit for not appreciating what you had.

So let me say once again, Thank You Markos. You deserve exactly what you are going to get.

I have one small correction. We did have a very painful evolution for a couple of days just trying to accommodate the sheer volume. But JtC has been doing the work of ten normal human beings to make it technologically possible to accommodate all the new people.

what is really funny is that in high school, my senior year, we did wizard of oxz. I tried out for, and got, the Wicked Witch role. 200 freshmen girls, 100 sophomores, 20 juniors, and 4 seniors competed with me. But, I, a male, with a wicked sense of femur, tibia, and humor, got that role.

The fact that I had acted in 20+ plays and musicals in HS probably helped.

the best part was when our director (a part time teacher seeking a full time job) came up to me after we finished all our performances, and said, "AG, I did not think you had that in you. But, your performances were great. Sorry about my ... . Sorry. and great job. Again.. . . By the way, the acclaim here got me a permanent job."

the handwriting was on the wall for several years about the direction that things were headed, I think we just noticed it a little earlier than most. We saw how folks were dropping out one by one, giving up, and we scrambled to put something in place to catch them before they left for good. We started as Google Group about a year and a half ago, migrated to a phpBB forum and then moved to another phpBB forum that I built as a temporary home, while I built this site. The whole time, from the start of the Google Group, up until now, our aspirations were what you see here. We had a feeling this would happen, we discussed it regularly, and that's what kept us pushing on.

and the 'Rox v. Sux' Wars of 2014 were no exception.

Of course they weren't really about [Obama] Rox v [Obama] Sux, although that was how they were framed. IIRC, they were really about 'The Corporate Democratic party is the real Democratic Party, and anybody who says otherwise must be thrown off the island!' versus 'America . . . Constitutional Government . . . 1%/99% . . . continuing Bush policies . . . TPP . . . NSA . . . income equality . . . and all the other arguments you see being made by Progressives.

Then came the Edict, then came the bannings and HR strafings, and then some folks who had been banned, or had chosen self-deportation, or had just decided to build an alternative site, generate the beginnings of the Lifeboat that later became c99.

Around the time of that transition, the people being attacked as 'Not True Democrats' shared lots of discussion about 'why this, why now?' Many theories were discussed, but the one that stuck with me, and which I always thought was the best answer, was that dKos was expected to deliver a (or several) solid blocs of ideologically-pure True Believers before the next election, so he had to clear out the dross and make room for a new influx of younger, hipper people (he packaged this as needing to keep up with 'the market'). Well, I think he got his younger, hipper crew -- but didn't realize how non-traditional they would turn out to be.

As for the timing on this Purge, I think it came from above. Like most of us, I have my standard visit-every-day sites, including the Guardian. Up to the end of the first week in March, they had been covering the Primaries about the way I expected them to from past experience, and had been giving Sanders pretty fair coverage. Then one morning I was startle to see a big change in the way that Clinton, and Sanders wee covered. The change was mainly in the language, the style used. Suddenly the language seemed to make Clinton bigger, more important and impactful, further ahead and inevitable, while Sanders was suddenly unimportant, slightly silly, and insignificant. On other sites, Sanders had similarly gone from an interesting, surprising dark horse to someone who had to be mentioned a little at least.

I went to DK and saw the Edict being reacted to -- I had missed it by a day. By the following Sunday (2 days), the Primaries were over and America was now on General Election footing. A few days later, we learned that The Memo had indeed gone out and that Clinton henchman Brock had sent it.

So it really took no predictive powers for the c99 Originals to know that another dKos Purge would come; all they had to do was look at the past. What could not be predicted was when -- for who could forsee that Her Royal Clintoness would decree that Election season would commence halfway through the Primaries, or that the world media would immediately agree?

(Pls excuse typos; I must quit now, and can't proofread.)

up
0 users have voted.

But this time, corrective measures have been put in place well in advance through the usual Clinton machine tactics of strongarm intimidation. The reach of that level of power is great. History shows that at times, the only way to win is with the sheer volume of bodies mowed down, metaphorically or otherwise, with more that keep coming until the Powers That Be are overtaken and removed. Then the people have to do what they can to see that what arises in place of what was is better than what it replaced, not merely different.

The What's Happenin' diary series at TOP was the hangout for the leftier bunch at that site. It was a series that was loathed but tolerated by much of the site mgmt (tolerated, too, were the many attempts by "pragmatic" types to troll the series). When the idea of Caucus groups arose, to considerable grassrootsy interest and enthusiasm, the PTB over there quashed those in a flash. The pattern was clear.

The discussions of alternatives outside TOP, for those who would be targeted for banning or who would just leave out of frustration, began immediately. Joanneleon closed her What's Happenin' series and left TOP. The Evening Blues series started about that time to catch those who were suddenly without a home, as the beginnings of this site developed through the email lists. It was a nomadic drift for a while, as this site was improved in one form after another and members spent time here or over there. A core stayed here, and gradually grew, to make this place work. Fortunately, it was nearly ready for the tidal wave of the past two weeks.

went from a totally buff Labor wonk to writing trolling FP hit pieces on Bernie Sanders - who embodies the spirit of the Labor Movement. There is not a pol out there who compare's with Bernie in regards to supporting and receiving the support of the rank and file - he is beloved.

The second sign was Shaun King leaving. That was major...and showed to me there was more than meets the eye going on backstage at TOS.

Finally DK5 was suspect from the beginning - not only is it a mediocre upgrade compared to DK4 on the front end - hardly worth all the effort (and DK4 still runs the majority of the pages behind the FP), but I suspect the backend has plenty of trapdoors and black holes to enforce a more rigorous monitoring and control of the masses that could not be technically added into DK4 - for example anonymous flags? - get real.

If there's anyone who doesn't realize it yet, there were good people putting this site together, tweaking it, nurturing it, explicitly for the day when this would happen. C99P was created as a lifeboat for kossacks who saw what was in the works over there, what was happening (no pun intended, joanne) bit by bit to confine our thoughts, and who knew we needed something better: a place where our minds could wander where they must as we envision a better society. TOP was about constricting perspectives, and that wasn't going to work for many who'd assembled over there in earlier and more adventurous times. Rather than see everyone part on solitary paths, a few good souls put together the lifeboat, in a sequence of forms, until this one seemed to fit the bill.

For a site to work so well for so many, after only a hiccup with the inundation of new members, can only occur when smart folks create something smarter. I've been lucky to see a lot of the genesis, and I know how much went into making this happen. Thank JtC and Joe and Can't Stop the Signal, and dkmich and gulfgal and Mollie and JayRaye and people I am leaving out and writers like gjohnsit who took the plunge to make this work.

We learned at TOP, what worked, what didn't, and the folks who created this place understood the value of "better" in "more and better." It isn't about Dems; it's about all of us.

I would suggest that having the blog that has most often referred to in the MSM as "Progressive" become a mouthpiece for the DLC has certain advantages.

Conventional wisdom now becomes that the Left is actually a bunch of pragmatists who can see why cooperating with corporations and the rich is vital.

The Left is once again relegated to the "Crazy Commies" of the Reagan years.

Course, that also assumes that the writers with years of credit stick around to provide the veneer of street cred...

Would it be an abandonment of everything he's fought for over 30 years? Pretty much.

So, it's a question of how high the Democratic Party is willing to go as far as his price. It had better be REALLY freaking high. (I'm going with MAJOR concessions in their platform, made in public statements, or he won't play ball.)

Unless of course he was told at the start of his campaign he had to concede and endorse if he lost, which IMHO he should be fully within his rights to disregard because they didn't keep up their side of running an honest opposition.

Course, this is still theoretical because he hasn't lost yet... And hopefully WON'T lose.

will tell his supporters to vote Clinton'? Has Mr Sanders or a surrogate actually SAID that? If so, would somebody *please*find the press release or the interview or the campaign speech or the credible reporting or any credible source that puts those words clearly and believably in Sander's mouth.

Have I missed something? Did he say it, and I missed the reporting? It's possible.

Or is that assertion nothing more than a rumor somebody started somewhere by somebody for some reason, or for no reason at all? (And if it is a rumor, who started it and who is pushing it?)

Again, it's possible I missed something, and the rumor is based in fact. But I'll only believe it after somebody has shown me solid proof.

The last thing I've heard Mr Sanders say about his plans is that he plans to stay in the primaries until they are finished.

And when the primaries are finished, and if Mr. Sanders has to tell his supporters how to vote now he's gone, I imagine he'll say, 'Vote Your conscience.'

He won't run as an indie and he has always run with the Democrats against the republicans as shown by his 95% voting with Dems voting record. He knows he has a lot of supporters that won't vote Republican and for Clinton to win he will need to try to persuade as many as possible to vote Democrat if he does lose. It would make no sense for him to not get behind Clinton and in effect, he would be going back on his promise to assist the Democratic party.

"Sanders, an independent in the U.S. Senate who is seeking the 2016 presidency on the Democratic ticket, explained in a Q & A session with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that he feels a responsibility to stick to the two party system in the Presidential contest.
"If it happens that I do not win that process, would I run outside the system?", Sanders said in an interview broadcast by CSPAN. "No, I made the promise that I would not and I will keep that promise. And the reason for that is I do not want to be responsible for electing some right wing Republican to be President of the United States".

the Sunday Political Talk Shows, and I've heard Bernie say that he'll support 'whoever the Dem Party nominee is.' (by implication, it has to include FSC, I suppose)

I posted the excerpt below, last year.

I'll include the link.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You are the longest serving independent in Congress, as I said, and when you announced Thursday, you said you'd remain an independent. But now you are prepared to file as a Democrat?

SANDERS: No. In my heart, I am an independent. I have been an independent for 30 years. But I am seeking the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States. And obviously I'm going to follow all of the rules and regulations to get on the ballot as a Democrat.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So if you lose in this nomination fight, will you support the Democratic nominee?

SANDERS: Yes. I have in the past.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Not going to run as an independent.

SANDERS: No, absolutely not. I've been very clear about that.

Now, I've accepted that Bernie thought it was best that he run as a Dem. That's 'water under the bridge.'

But, I'm still 'hoping' that he will reconsider the stance (above), and decline to support FSC as the Dem Party nominee (if she wins the primary).

I sincerely feel that Bernie would be better equipped to lead a revolution, if he doesn't endorse her.

But that's just me. YMMV.

Have a good one.

A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.

Our political system dictated that Sanders had to run under the banner of one of the two major parties. It is the only ticket in to the door. We must remember that Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party was arrested in 2012 when she tried to go to the Presidential debates. The only ticket into the door is to be a member of either the Democratic or Republican party. Second, as part of being under the Democratic banner, I am fairly sure Sanders had to sign an agreement that he would support the party's nominee if he did not get the nomination. I believe that those two things are beyond the control of Sanders or his supporters.

So what does that mean? First, if Bernie continues to campaign even after his is mathematically eliminated, I see that as a positive sign that this campaign is more about the message. I will be disappointed if he drops out before the final primary, unless it is due to lack of funds or a medical issue. Second, I will be carefully watching how he crafts his message of support should he not get the nomination.

On a personal note, this campaign means far more than the Presidency to me. It is about educating the public that more is realistically possible here in the United States than our corrupt politicians have been telling us and we should demand better from them. And Bernie has pulled the curtain back to reveal the depth of corruption here in the US politics. So it is up to us to continue it, regardless of the outcome of the primary or general.

Finally, if Clinton and the DNC think that Bernie's supporters will automatically come over, they are going to be very disappointed. The millennials, in particular, are far too smart to automatically throw their support to a supremely flawed candidate. My guess is that they will stay home or write in Bernie.

I too hope he simply says, 'Vote Your conscience.'
