Some non-political content, cold and white

Hi, everybody.

There are excellent essays on this site right now. This is not one of them. So if you're looking for stirring political discourse from impassioned, intelligent people, just tap that spot called "Community Content" up-page and head for those much better corners of the site. This is where those of a less stirring nature can gather round the fire and swap tales they'll tell their grandchildren of when they froze their tuchases off in 2019. Basically, I didn't know where else to comment, so use this space.

For many of us, it's kinda wintry out there. More than usual.

(Donning my grampa glasses now as I recall a winter in my youth) In the deep dark past I lived in the north. Really north. Arctic storm-track north. One of the things I was doing at that juncture of my career was editing Hudson Bay Company journals from the late nineteenth century, written at an outpost close to Point Barrow, and as we read their dutifully logged daily weather reports we'd note "Hey, that's warmer than here!"

But even "here" there was one day that everyone remembers. A weekday, when you woke up to a voice on your alarm radio telling you in a stern but supportive voice that the police were advising everyone to stay inside, don't go out. The temperature was minus-30 Fahrenheit, and the wind chill was eighty below. Just in case that did not sink in, they recounted that just that morning a local resident, in pajamas and robe and slippers, had opened his front door to pick up the morning newspaper (this alone tells you how long ago this was) to have the latest to read over his first cup of coffee. The wind sucked the door shut behind him, and he died on his front step, in minutes. So they said. Maybe it was made up, but it was certainly plausible, as we'd find out.

I had to go outside that day, or I thought I did. One of the most important days of the year to be at my post. All of us were supposed to be there. I lived a few blocks from where I needed to go, and we had a winter habit of walking a couple of blocks, ducking into a store to warm up, walking another couple of blocks, again finding a store, and so on. The store owners were used to this and welcomed it; we frequently bought snacks or coffees there. We also knew how to bundle up, in layer upon layer. We were pros at this. That morning as we arrived at our destination, maybe a dozen of us out of the hundred or so who should have been there in any other circumstance, we all looked at each other and cracked up laughing, at least as much as you can crack up laughing through frozen breath. Every one of us had frostbite, very minor frostbite just on the lobes of the ears or the tip of the nose, but it was frostbite. You knew when it happened from the feel of it, and you saw the purple patches on your fellow idiots who'd made it in. Needless to say, the day was a waste from the job side of things, but it was one of those moments in your life that you use to measure all other moments.

I say all this (taking off my grampa glasses) because I just saw something I had heard of, especially in the north, but never (skeptic that I am) actually, indisputably seen. The wind has been kicking up for hours here in southeastern Pennsylvania, stuff not nailed down is looking for other yards to cavort across, and the temperatures are headed lower. Faucets are set on a tiny drip, to prevent frozen pipes. I have enough food for a month, rich hearty things like stews and lasagna. And three pounds of coffee and tea and whatnot. I mentioned I'm a pro, didn't I?

But just now I looked out my front window, to the street no more than thirty feet away, across its two lanes to the opposite sidewalk, and no further. Everything beyond that was missing. You could see the snowflakes racing horizontally on the wind -- blizzard-style -- but they were engulfed in a fog as dense as any I've ever seen. An honest-to-god snow-fog. And I just have to say it's the most beautiful thing you'll ever see. If, that is, you're set with warm digs and lots of food and no need to go out for anything. The people driving in this are nuts.

So, knowing that some of you out there are experiencing your own special winters, I thought this site could use a break, a coffee or hot chocolate break, preferably near a crackling woodstove, to report in on what is happening in your neck of the woods. It's an Open Thread when every chink in the house should be closed. How're ya farin', c99ers?

not a bot hit, whatever that is.

It was a user that evidently doesn't want to be with us anymore. Comments can't be deleted by anyone but joe shikspack and myself, so if a user wants to remove their comments they have to go through them one by one and manually edit them out. This happened this morning before I was aware of it.

That's the price to be paid for allowing comments to be edited and I'm not going to disable that popular function because one yahoo decided to edit out all of their comments. I'm not going to let that asshole ruin it for everyone else.

By the way that user, BlaBlaOligarchy is now blocked, the same will happen to anyone else that decides to abuse the editing privilege.

12 below with howling winds. Just got back from my daily walk. You can actually work up a sweat with all the clothing required to venture into the outdoors on a day like today.
Yet I'm thoroughly tired of all the warnings and complaining about the cold. It happens less frequently now then years ago.
On top of that, I still run into people that say "So much for global warming".

. . . and in the old days, nineteenth century days, every winter the Schuylkill River would freeze. There were stores in the downtown shopping area that would post a flag over the sidewalk when the river was frozen solidly enough to skate on it, . . . and the whole city would stop what they were doing to go skating, up to a thousand people on the river at a time.

That has not happened in a century. People here today look at you like you're crazy when you recount this.

This is from Russia, but this is what our winters used to be like. And the snow wouldn't melt until April or longer.

The last heavy winter I remember was over a decade ago. We kept getting this much snow or more for about a month.

schools and various businesses (e.g., my credit union) are all closed today and tomorrow morning.

meanwhile, in winnipeg, manitoba (and the surrounding rural areas) most schools are open today and tomorrow, though many are canceling school bus service since it is absolutely not safe to send your kids out to wait at the bus stop. this is despite forecasts for temperatures 5 to 10F lower than those in southern wisconsin, and wind chills 10F to 20F lower.

i also don't have a picture of 9-year-old me playing organized, outdoor hockey at -20F -- but I know it happened. (and please, don't talk to me about windchill.) 12-minute periods. helmets jammed on over top of toques. long scarves wound in the classic winnipeg little-kid double-wrap. parents (including my poor illinois-raised dad) in knee-length parkas freezing their butts off, standing high up on the snow that we had tossed over the boards, shoveling the rink before a dozen practices through the season. coach warming our skates between periods, with a propane torch, in the cramped dressing room reeking of scorched leather.

which makes me, i hate to tell you, cooler than you. and indeed, cooler than anyone else on this blog. 'cuz that's the kinda street cred that comes with doing the unthinkable for fun when you're not even in double-digits yet.

to homeless shelters. The busses are roaming the city and letting people come aboard to warm up. And if drivers see people just using the bus to keep warm they aren't kicking them off. The few articles I've read seem to say that Chicago is trying to keep people from dying. And churches have opened their basements and are feeding people and giving out clothing. Not sure if it's enough, but it's something.

they say there are up to -50 degree celsius when you include the wind chill factor in regions of the MidWest and Eastern Pennsylvania. That is how I imagine a deep Siberian winter cold. Really dangerous. So, please stay inside and bunker yourself in. If your house is covered under snow, leave the snow in place, because it is insulating. At least someone explained that to me. Wait til it starts melting a bit.

The images look so beautiful. What a trick the weathergods are playing with us?

We had some - 5 Degree celsius here in Germany (23 degree F) where I am with some wind. I walked around the block with my sister. She broke together and couldn't stand up anymore and fell. I needed the help of two men to get her up again and we slowly walked back home like drunken sailors.

So, I can only vaguely imagine how it feels for you with -30 degree Fahrenheit.

Stay warm. Be well. Hope you have lots of candles when electricity fails.

NORTH Florida, that is, where we do have a change of seasons and get some cold weather, it was in the low 30's this am with a high in the upper 40's. Brevard, NC where I spend much of the year, it was 14 degrees this morning. My NC walking partner and I usually will walk in nearly any type of weather, the exception being if there is ice on the roads and sidewalks. We have gone out in as low as 18 degrees, but I doubt she went out in 14 degrees this morning.

but where i live, winter fogs (in snowy weather or not) are becoming more common, as the rivers and spring-fed ponds stay clear of ice, yea even into late january. then when a cold snap hits, warm moist air rising off of this open water turns into fog. from the right places, you can see the course of the sugar river, wending its way to the southeast, marked out by the fog. you end up with some gorgeous hoarfrost, as the moisture crystallizes on the naked twigs and stems of all the riverside vegetation.

a year ago, i drove in the westbound lanes right past this pileup, just 5 or 10 minutes after the police had managed to secure the area and prevent anyone else from driving into it. i hit a very similar fog in the same place about 2 weeks ago, almost missed my exit ramp.

as to way up north, well, hell i don't know, but we're gonna get -30F way down south here. i believe the coldest temperature i ever witnessed (i was wee and don't recall, so this is my mother's testimony) growing up not far north of the borderline (where the winds hit heavy) was -45F. they used a different wind-chill formula in those days, i definitely saw some that were in the triple-digits. those are almost unheard of using the new formula, which is hard to push below -80.

We know we're crazy to live in this. It's part of what we are, and we know how to cope with it. And it does afford glorious autumns.

For many of us, well east of the Mississippi, it also means in the not-too-distant future we'll be one of the few areas on earth with water (you're apparently in the other such area of the U.S.). Probably forty percent of our annual precipitation (and almost all of our crucial winter precipitation) comes in those nor'easters that will continue merrily throughout climate change. Snow protects us, and if you just leave it alone it adds nitrogen to the soil without polluting the waters one bit.
