I'm sorry, Bernie.

I couldn’t get to the rally in Phoenix today, and I feel really bad. I wanted to be one of those 8,255 people cheering you on — letting you know that there are still so many of us pushing for you. But, I was exhausted.

I just moved again this week. It just keeps getting harder and harder to do this at my age (I’m past 60 and that’s as much as I will admit). I had to “borrow” money (which I will never be able to pay back) from my kids again to come up with the deposit for my new rental. I work hard, but it is always juggling low paying jobs and I’m never quite able to get ahead. Since Arizona is a right-to-work state, there are few unions to push for a minimum wage of $15/hour. And with the ACA employer mandate, the company where I work won’t give part time people more than 30 hours/week — sometimes my weekly hours are down at 8. It is difficult to schedule my second job (I do housekeeping) because the first job changes hours all of the time. And I’m tired.

I managed to drag myself to my son-in-law’s birthday party this evening. I didn’t want to disappoint him. I thought, “I’ll just go for an hour and then go home to bed.” But, surprisingly, I stayed until 2 AM.

Why did I have the energy to keep going?

Because among the guests at the party, there were millennials who were Berners — passionate young people who have heard the call.

They knew more about what was REALLY going on in politics than most of the people I know who are my age. Every one of them had stories about their fears of climate change. One young man was almost in tears with a story of watching the glaciers melt when he was in Alaska. Another spoke solemnly of how there just aren’t enough progressive people to actually force progress, and, he was hoping that it wasn’t too late to save the planet. A tiny young woman stood up and raised her fists when talking about how much we have to fight for the changes — and she could recite ‘chapter and verse’ on how badly the country needs Bernie Sanders.

The conversation went in all directions with 15 participants speaking rationally about two-party systems, democratic socialism, constitutional amendments, and the issues facing our country today — what is wrong and what is right. I was exhilarated! I was back in the 1960’s with deja vu all over again. Only this time, this young generation has so much more to offer. They have the world at their fingertips with social media and they don’t seem to rely on any ONE source for their news — they have a very broad view of the ‘real’ world (and the WHOLE world, not just their piece of it). And all 15 of these millennials were Berners!

So, I got to go to a Bernie rally, after all. Maybe Bernie couldn’t hear me screaming my support, but, I hope that he hears me telling him: there is more screaming of support than you would have heard at the coliseum in Phoenix today.

And now I’m going to sleep, satisfied that there is a whole generation gearing up for a political revolution!

Go, Bernie!

(cross-posted at dailykos. I wanted to put it here as well so that people who have been banned or who no longer feel welcome at dk can still see the hope in our young people)

My friend who went to the Salt Lake City rally isn't young anymore, and after standing in line for an hour and a half to get in he stood for another three hours (there was no place to sit down). I didn't go because I had to be at work, but it would have been tough for me to stand that long. I salute the 14,000 supporters who made the event a yuuge success.

Over 60 ... check. Tired ... check.

But I recently discovered that, of the seven homes on our little court, three of us support Bernie Sanders all the way. So now I'm hatching plans to bring up Bernie to the other four. I'm willing to bet right now that at least two more are thinking about voting Bernie.

Recently bought a stash of little Bernie pins. So I keep a pocketful handy as my "hook" to get others to look into what Bernie is all about! Funny how my tiredness lifts when I'm doing Bernie things ...

"Long term: first the rich get mean, then the poor get mean, and the rest is history." My brother Rob.

But my thanks to you over here. That is an inspirational story, and helps to confirm what I see in the Sanders campaign. The odds have always been long against his winning the nomination, but his campaign has already created the next generation of Left politics in America. He has created a basic economic agenda, and has done a great deal to put vital social justice issues on the table.

The Clintons are the past, even if they win. A President Hillary must be sandwiched between right-wing crazies on one side and a resurgent Left led by young people and the working class. There's a small chance in that case that Hillary would have no choice but follow a Sanders agenda, lest she find herself without a political power base. Building that Left movement is our real work, no matter what happens to the Sanders candidacy.

How do you see this happening?

If our populist cause fails to actually elect a POTUS and some congress people I really don't see any sandwiching occurring. There is exactly and only one thing she cares about... that's power so she can sell it for wealth. If we cannot threaten her power ... a point she will have validated by getting elected ... then we are nothing to her.

Hillary's political base is quite obviously not liberal, left or progressive. Our whining and moaning about things like representation and justice matters naught to them.

and assuming HRC wins the nomination and general, then we must elect more progressives in the midterms and make her a one-term president and try again.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Democratic registration is less than 30% of the electorate now, at an historic low. Establishment Democrats are lazily waiting for "demographic trends" to save their asses, but don't seem to realize that demographics are people, and people can exercise independent judgment. Young people were counted in the Democratic column, for instance, and Sanders' campaign is showing that is not a safe assumption for a Clintonian party to make. I suspect a lot of "Democratic" demographic members may not oblige the party by creating the wave they expect.

Now that Bernie has pulled the curtain back on the corrupt Democratic establishment, and as consciousness grows that these people are not really our friends, I expect that in the next few years the Democratic base will shrivel further. When independents outnumber members of either party by growing margins, that indicates a political market failure that will not go on forever. Something is going to happen to shake up the corrupt, ossified status quo. We're seeing the Republican establishment imploding now. I don't think the Democratic establishment is too far behind. The next recession, if handled once more by another corporatist Democratic administration, could do it. If we have a President Hillary presiding over such a collapse, she's going to have to do something. Wall Street has a lot of money, but not very many votes.

I just don't see a near-run as doing anything to exert influence on HRC. We have to win. Those enamored of the corrupt use of power won't give it up readily.

For me anyway, Bernie has shown me a path to redemption from within the Democratic party. It's going to be a hard path since we fight the party itself but it seems more plausible than getting a 3rd party going.

It's a big club...and you ain't in it!

I saw but did not open this diary at TOP. Given what that place is, I expected the first line after the title to be, "you're a loser". What a treat to find this warm, touching and beautiful story. The future belongs to our kids. I hope they show up and take it. Thanks for posting this here. I would have missed it.
