How did this make it through the corporate filter?

American Odyssey

The series, created by writer director Peter Horton and writers Adam Armus and Kay Foster, is not just about a female Special Forces officer who is fighting to prove she’s alive after an attack in North Africa. It’s also about a young, truth-driven protester trying to uncover the connection between the government’s mercenary security forces and allegations of financial support going to the very groups they are supposed to be fighting, one family’s despair over the presumed loss of their wife and mother and another’s struggle to keep it together because dad is on the trail of government corruption.

Rising and shining after a 3 day weekend. Well, shining might be a bit much.

Sounds very interesting. Is it Netflix? I got hooked on Weeds.

On network TV--NBC. A sign that some of these ideas are penetrating the mass consciousness?

on TV/film productions that use current political incidences as their plot in reenactment of "the real stuff in politics", which makes me a person, I realized, who has nothing to say, when listening to people talking about their favorite TV shows online. I always wondered how much these productions are used to ever so subtly nudge the viewer's mind and manipulate his thinking with regards to current political affairs. I never took time to think a bit more in depth about it. But it's a question that is recurring in my mind. I don't want to try it out. Kind of don't want to know, if I would get hooked. I never tried weed too. Basically everything that could alter my mind artificially I reject, but of course there are so many things one doesn't understand and recognize as manipulating "agent". I got quite a bit allergic against "reenactments" of "political incidences" via TV productions. I realized that young people end up not knowing what in the reenactments is "worthy of being a true statement" and what is "an attempt to use/abuse your emotional conditions, fears and anxieties to manipulate your mental imaginations", which has lots of impact on how people end up thinking ideologically outside the framework of movies. Sometimes I wished to know who finances those productions...

We cut the cord five years ago in March. And we cannot get any stations without cable or satellite. So I know nothing about the programs that are on now and quite frankly it does not bother me either. In those five years, the only thing I miss is watching sports, but otherwise I have not missed having tv. What I did not expect was the benefit of having a quiet house. It is so much more relaxing without the constant drone of the tv in the background.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

when Keith Olbermann left/was kicked off MSNBC we cancelled our cable TV and decided not to get any kind of reception at all. We're much happier not having Rachel do her thing over and over again. We used to leave the TV on that station, watch whatever was on before her, then Rachel, then Keith, then all the repeats, just because it was easy to leave the thing on, as background noise.

I'm a sports fan so you might think I miss seeing the games but I can follow them all on the internet, reading the recap of each play rather than getting some site that's actually showing the events. I much prefer *reading* "Mariota ran for 12 yards to Stanford 48" than seeing it because, you know, the players are on steroids (I know it) and I'd *rather not* see that! I can imagine it as lads playing a game instead of big beefed up, pumped up, steroided monsters participating in a ritualized circus.

As for TV shows, if a show wasn't on at the beginning of 2011 then the only way we've seen it is if we rent the series. Shaz asked me the other day if I'd heard of a show called The Fall. I don't know, I don't care. I'd rather watch Shindig, to tell you the truth.

Shindig, that just cause a fold in the space/time of my memory.

Much of the latter is bad, and in the last couple of years a lot of it is good. Some of it is very good. One can throw out the bath water and keep the baby if one approaches the situation judiciously! A volume of Chekhov's short stories is printed on the same presses that churn out endless copies of Fifty Shades of Gray.
