A Happy and a Healthy New Year All

I’m celebrating the New Year with my favourite bird, the Tui.

Here he is in between sips of nectar from his favourite drop, Flax flowers …

There’s a lot to love about this bird. I will try to express my love in a few sentences. The Tui is truly a sight to see flying. They whizz by like arrows at break-neck speed curving through the dense bush with impressive speed and grace. You often hear their powerful woosh before you even see them. They sing beautifully with what seems like an infinite variety of melodies. They are very talkative and entertaining in their conversations with each other. I’m sure they’d make you laugh too if you could hear them. Other times their calls are so plaintive. They’re the first ones to rise in the morning and the last ones to bed. I think of them as guardians calling the bush awake in the morning and singing them back to sleep at night. They’re also very beautifully coloured with a white tuft of delicate feathers at the bottom of their neck that split into two parts opening and closing when they talk.

You can see the tuft in this wonderful photo ...

You can hear a little bit of their repertoire here … http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/tui#bird-sounds

I’m glad to have the evening with nothing to do but enjoy the sounds of the Tui, and when night falls I’ll watch my all time favourite film, Bagdad Cafe.

All the best to everyone.

Thanks for adding to my year - the regular photos and discussions.

and thank you for all the birds, janis. I wished I could fly ...

If I were a little bird
and also had two little wings
I would fly to you.
But because that cannot be,
I remain just here.

Equally if I am far from you,
yet I am with you in sleep
and talk to you.
When I become awake,
I am alone.

There is no hour of the night goes by
that my heart does not wake
and is thinking of you,
that many thousandfold
you gave your heart to me.

That's our smallest bird, which visits us everyday on our patio. He says hallo to Tui. Smile

@mimi That bird is called Wren in Europe, the two subspecies in the U.S. are now considered seperate species, the Winter Wren across the U.S., and the Pacific Wren in the Pacific states. They are incredible vocalists, The eastern type, Winter Wren in particular, which is essentially the same as what is in your vid. They can go for minutes seemingly without taking a breath bubbling amazing noises in a beautiful nonstop musical babble. One of the native American groups, perhaps the Blackfoot, had a name for them that translated roughly to "makes an incredible amount of noise for something so small."

Janis had already her New Year. I think the New Years crawls over Afghanistan right now. Peace for all the Afghani people. No more wars.

Our spectacular birds are not around now that winter has started, but there's something to be said for the loyalty of our resident titmouse, chickadee, nuthatch, wren, as well as the finches who have put away their colorful feathers, the mourning dove, and all our woodpeckers. Oops almost forgot to mention the hawks.

This little pine warbler hit the window and was revived, despite our cat's displeasure.

Happy New Year to all. Janis, thanks for the post. What a great wonderful bird your Tui is. I would equate it remotely (of course not related) to our blackbirds and grackles. Very interesting about their noisy flight (and notched primary that causes the sound). And a huge bird for the honeycreeper family at a foot long. I do some bird song recording so the call aspects are really amazing to me.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tui_(bird)

Songs and calls
Tui have complex variety of songs and calls, much like parrots.[12] They also resemble parrots in their ability to clearly imitate human speech,[13] and were trained by Māori to replicate complex speech.[14] Tui are also known for their noisy, unusual call, different for each individual, that combine bellbird-like notes with clicks, cackles, timber-like creaks and groans, and wheezing sounds. Songbirds have two voice boxes (syrinxes) [15] and this is what enables them to perform such a myriad of vocalisations. Tui song also exhibits geographical, microgeographic, seasonal, sex and individual variation.[16][17][18][19][20]

Some of the wide range of tui sounds are beyond the human register. Watching a tui sing, one can observe gaps in the sound when the beak is agape and throat tufts throbbing. However, ongoing research has so far failed to detect ultrasound within tui vocalisations. Tui will also sing at night, especially around the full moon period.[21]

@dystopian

Thanks for adding other interesting characteristics of the Tui. I was so surprised when we first camped on the Coromandel, about 70 miles away from home (as the Crow flies) and their calls were all slightly different, but still clearly Tui sounds. It was fascinating to me that their calls and songs were arranged in harmony with the different sounds around them.

I’ve been enjoying the birds this morning. I’ve had quail, mountain juncos, house finches, dove, sparrows, a thrasher, and one ladder-back woodpecker.

A peaceful new year to you and yours!

We're having WINTER! First the snow hit hard and fast yesterday and today we're having big winds causing whiteout conditions. Watched the neighborhood disappear and when it reappeared there were leaves everywhere!

I was out walking when this hit. Abby had a blast, Charlie headed for the car.

No way am I walking in 50-75 mph winds when it's in the 20's. I will walk in many conditions, but I put my foot down on cold wind. I can't move my jaw for hours afterwards.

memory--born this day in 1905--wanted to post this uplifting song by one of my fav artists, John Robert "Joe" Cocker, whose passed away four years ago this month.

[Night of theProms Antwerpen 1992: Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warmes: Up where we belong.]

[Lyrics Credit: Up Where We Belong, LyricsMode.Com]

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world, few hearts survive
All I know, is the way I feel
When it’s real, I keep my pray alive

The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb steps every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Up where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to “used-to-be”
Live their lives locking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives, out there to find

The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb steps every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Up where the clear winds blow

Time goes by
No time to cry
Life’s you and I, alive, baby

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Up where the clear winds blow

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Up where the clear winds blow

Thanks for posting this thread, Janis. Hope you and yours have a very lovely day, tomorrow.

his case, he was a huge man, standing 6'7" with a large frame; one who was often called a 'Gentle Giant.'

Although we lost him many years ago, we miss him dearly. When confronted with a very difficult choice, especially one that calls on me to determine what the moral course, or action would be, I reflexively ask myself, "What would Daddy do?"

Guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr !

“Tui” immediately made me think of the I Ching and hexagram 58, The Joyous.

And then, free-associating, the Joyous Lake in Woodstock, New York. When I lived in the area, I thought of it as a restaurant. Clueless me, eh? It turns out to have been actually much more well-known as a historic live-music venue or club where some big names were wont to play.
