The Weekly Watch

Under Water and Under Watered

Floods and droughts, droughts and floods...It was odd this week watching California burn as over four inches of rain fell here in the SE. We seem to be in an age of extremes - with our weather, wealth, war mongering, and welfare. Our political system is owned and controlled by the very agencies driving us down the path of extinction. Real information on foreign interference (by Israel and Saudi Arabia) is ignored as election theater designed to entertain and distract continues in my neighboring states of Georgia and Florida. What made me think of the title under water is the debt load with which we burden our young citizens...locking them into a life of indentured servitude. So let's jump in and see if we can keep our head above the flood waters of this week's news....

Student Debt
A new survey came out this week outlining the challenges people face to go the college...

My student loans have prevented me from really living. They stress me out more then I can explain. I pay and pay and pay, and the balance never seems to go down. I’ve had to put my federal loans in forbearance just to afford paying my private loans. Two of my loans have interest rates of 15%, and I have a third loan at 12%. I put almost two full paychecks towards my loans a month. It’s frustrating and honestly makes me feel completely defeated.

Climate and the Economy
Another obvious reference to Under Water is rising sea levels. I caught this lecture...

Roger Hallam is co-founder of the Radical Think Tank. His PhD studies looked at protest movements and revolutionary campaigns and what factors make them successful. After several practical campaigns, including wins for precarious workers, a student rent strike, and a divestment campaign at Kings College London, he is turning his hand to climate change. In this lecture, delivered at KCL in April, he first outlines the bleak current scientific thinking on man-made climate change, then presents the results of his campaigning research, and finally invites people to join a massive civil disobedience movement to force real change and quite possibly save mankind.

We develop roadmaps to transform the all-purpose energy infrastructures (electricity, transportation, heating/cooling, industry, agriculture/forestry/fishing)of 139 countries to ones powered by wind, water, and sunlight (WWS). The roadmaps envision 80% conversion by 2030 and 100% by 2050. WWS not only replaces business-as-usual (BAU) power, but also reduces it 42.5% because the work: energy ratio of WWS electricity exceeds that of combustion (23.0%), WWS requires no mining, transporting, or processing of fuels (12.6%), and WWS end-use efficiency is assumed to exceed that of BAU (6.9%). Converting may create 24.3 million more permanent, full-time jobs than jobs lost. It may avoid 4.6 million/year premature air-pollution deaths today and 3.5 million/year in 2050; $22.8 trillion/year (12.7 ¢/kWh-BAU-all-energy) in 2050 air-pollution costs; and $28.5 trillion/year (15.8 ¢/kWh-BAU-all-energy) in 2050 climate costs. Transitioning should also stabilize energy prices because fuel costs are zero, reduce power disruption and increase access to energy by decentralizing power, and avoid 1.5 degrees C global warming. The roadmaps are not a prediction of what might happen. They are one proposal for an end-state mix of WWS generators by country and a timeline to get there that we believe can largely solve the world’s climate-change, air-pollution, and energy-security problems.

The latest violence began after a botched Israeli raid turned deadly. Palestinians discovered a car of undercover Israeli operatives, leading to a firefight. Palestinian militants then fired rockets into southern Israel, and Israel launched massive airstrikes that destroyed homes, the AlAqsa TV station, and other civilian infrastructure.
Now a ceasefire has reportedly been reached, in a move brokered by Egypt. But it’s worth remembering that any ceasefire would only return Gaza to the state of affairs of just a few days ago...

The United Nations is just a US lapdog that gives the US and Saudi coalition a fig leaf of legality for the genocide in Yemen. The UN has authorized a one-sided arms embargo against Yemen, which the US and Saudis have turned into a total blockade of food, water, and humanitarian supplies. If the establishment media’s coverage in the home stretch of the 2018 midterm elections is any kind of prologue to 2020, be prepared for an avalanche of right-wing xenophobic propaganda during our next presidential election. That’s because, once again, the political press dutifully chased Trump’s rhetorical tail as Election Day neared, and repeatedly ceded its editorial judgment and newshole to the nativist fearmongering he used to stoke the Republican Party’s base. And nowhere was this fecklessness more apparent than media’s breathless “migrant caravan” coverage.

is the pretext for the war in Yemen? As in, who are the aggressors, and what is their excuse?

And for that matter, in three sentences, what are the real reasons?

Because I have no idea. I asked a Saudi Arabian kid, here on a student visa, and he was as bewildered as I am. He had no explanation, neither official nor actual. He just shook his head sadly.

@UntimelyRippd

but no wonder you have to ask...

U.S. Central Command commander Gen. Lloyd Austin was asked what the ultimate goal of the GCC air campaign in Yemen was, and for the general to estimate its likelihood of success.

Gen. Austin answered with refreshing honesty: “I don’t currently know the specific goals and objectives of the Saudi campaign, and I would have to know that to be able to assess the likelihood of success.” In other words, the military commander responsible for overseeing the provision of support for a new air war in the Middle East did not know what the goals of the intervention were, or how he could evaluate whether it was successful. The United States had become a willing co-combatant in a war without any direction or clear end state.

For that matter let's examine the rationale for our wars in Libya, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan ... I find those as just as puzzling.

My suspicion is that the real reason we are destabilizing the region is that it is likely to increase oil prices.

...full-scale American backing for the Saudi-led intervention there in the Obama years. Even as his administration denounced Bashar al-Assad’s slaughter of Syrian civilians, his officials seemed unmoved by the suffering war was inflicting on Yemenis. In fact, the Obama administration offered $115 billion worth of weaponry to Riyadh, including a $1.15 billion package finalized in August 2016, when the scale of Yemen’s catastrophe was already all too obvious.

“Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson was paid $20.2 million in 2017, even as the company’s weapons killed tens of thousands of civilians in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen. Raytheon CEO Thomas Kennedy made $24.8 million, as millions of people became refugees, fleeing the carnage caused by its weapons. Boeing CEO Dennis A. Muilenberg made $18.5 million, as even the World Bank noted that 90% of the people killed in today’s wars are civilians, mostly women and children.”

the middle east has something to do with either Oil or Israel, or both ... but were the Yemenis somehow failing to play ball? how did the poor miserable fuckers become the targets of all this violence, rather than just the licensors to the west of some nice and lucrative concession (maybe a 99-year lease, a la hong kong, or whatever the hell the deal is/was on guantanamo, on that oh-so-important eastern shore of the straits.)? in what context are they currently resisting western power, rather than just cowering under the rain of bombs and wondering when/whether it will ever stop? is the whole thing some sort of quid pro quo from the west to the saudis? "yeah, you can have yemen, we don't care, just as long as yadda yadda yadda ..."

The Hashemite Mutawakkilite Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of Yemen or, retrospectively, as North Yemen, was a state that existed between 1918 and 1962 in the northern part of what is now Yemen. Its capital was Sana'a until 1948.Religious leaders of the Zaydi sect of Shia Islam expelled forces of the Ottoman Empire from what is now northern Yemen by the middle of the 17th century but, within a century, the unity of Yemen was fractured due to the difficulty of governing Yemen's mountainous terrain.

https://www.onwar.com/actors/type42/Mutawakkilite-Kingdom-of-Yemen.htm

The Middle Eastern nation has long been one of the region's poorest. In 2015, it was ranked 168 out of 188 countries on the Human Development Index, which measures life expectancy, education and standard of living.

Until the early 1960s, the country was ruled by a monarchy in the north and the British in the south. Coups in both regions plunged the country into decades of violence, ending with reunification in 1990.

Yemen's war unfolded over several years, beginning with the Arab Spring in 2011. Pro-democracy protesters took to the streets in a bid to force President Ali Abed Allah Saleh to end his 33-year rule. He responded with economic concessions, but refused to resign.

By March, tensions on the streets of the capital city, Sanaa, saw protesters dying at the hands of the military. One of Yemen's most prominent commanders backed the opposition, paving the way for deadly clashes between government troops and tribal militias.

Thanks to an internationally-brokered deal, Yemen finally saw a transfer of power in November to Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, paving the way for elections in February - in which he was the only candidate. Hadi's attempts at constitutional and budget reforms sparked outcry by Houthi rebels from the north.

the conflict divides into two main categories: pro-government forces led by President Hadi and anti-government forces led by the Houthis, who are backed by former President Saleh.
The Houthis hail from Yemen's north and belong to a small branch of Shiite Muslims known as Zaydis.

@dystopian

I found this interesting...

The first problem with calling the Houthis “Shi‘a” is that, technically, they are not Shi‘a, at least not in the way that most people understand contemporary Shi‘ism. Shi‘ism is distinguished from Sunnism, the other main branch of Islam, primarily by the Shi‘i belief that Muhammad’s rightful heirs as religio-political leaders, or Imams, of the Muslim community are the Prophet’s son-in-law ‘Ali and his progeny. Most Houthis are Zaydis, that is, members of a Shi‘i denomination that split off from the main body in the eighth century because of a dispute over recognition of the Fifth Imam. Zaydis do not believe, as most Shi‘a do, that the imamate must be handed down through a particular line of ‘Ali’s descendants. Today about 85 percent of Shi‘a worldwide, including the vast majority of Iranian and Iraqi Shi‘a, and the Shi‘a of Lebanon, follow what is called Twelver Shi‘ism: They believe that the Twelfth Imam was the last legitimate successor to Muhammad and ‘Ali, and that one day he will return from occultation, or hiding, to restore just rule and battle evil. Erasing the distinction between Zaydis and Twelvers—something akin to calling the Copts Roman Catholics—may not seem terribly consequential. But it has profound political consequences for the war in Yemen, given evolving alliance structures and the ambitions of regional powers, particularly the Saudis.

https://www.merip.org/mero/mero012718

There are, for instance, significant differences between the Houthis’ Zaydi variant of Shia Islam and the Twelver Shiism dominant in Iran – and some similarities between Zaydis and Sunnis – which makes the ubiquitous claims about a Iran-Houthi faith-based pact shaky.

western world despite overwhelming scientific evidence that they are both harmful and unnecessary. Despite the fact that almost all educated citizens are at least vaguely aware of the problems, the years go by and nobody in our governments addresses them.

Examples (with a US bias)
A. Agricultural abuse of antibiotics
B. Continued use of softwood timber for paper production, despite its concomitant environmental downsides (first and foremost being mercury pollution).
C. Unsustainable pumping of ancient reservoirs of groundwater, whether to irrigate Nebraska's wheat fields, or fill Dasani bottles.

I would love to see someone address the problem of getting these issues, not front and center, but at least on the table in our legislative bodies.

The video proved that beautifully and I remembered that part from the first time I became aware of her. I couldn't get my mind off the thought, how great it would be, if both Hillary Clinton and Tulsi Gabbard would run and compete against each other. I so much would love for Hillary Clinton been crashed into shame and shambles by Tulsi Gabbard.

I alsos liked Jane Sanders talking foreign politics, especially because Bernie didn't do a good job on it. She could be Sec. of state in a Gabbard Presidency... heh why not?

Good grief. The people in Utah think that was a great thing Trump did because Utah could manage its land better. Or they say that they want the land back no matter how many people tell them that the land was never theirs to begin with.

When ever someone does something wrong their response is to lock them up and throw away the key. No matter what.

Slavery would still be legal. The courts were established to make sure popular opinion didn't screw over minorities (and I would add the planet). Consider the rapidity with which they (the rethugs) are stacking the courts. It will be decades till they die. We don't have that kind of time to waste. Hell of a fix we're in.

Aspie posted this link earlier this week. I found it very interesting and I'm so glad to see Abby back with the Empire Files - produced without the help of Telesur
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdhIYWb3XVU (52 min)

Since October 2017, America experienced three of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history. This epidemic coincides with a frightening resurgence of white nationalism. Sometimes the two trends overlap. But why here? Both phenomena can be explained by a common historical thread—to unravel it Abby Martin sits down with indigenous scholar Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz to discuss her latest book “Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment”. Empire Files is now produced by your donations!

As someone pointed out (I think) in the Marxism, Science, Anthropocene group over at Facebook, the Green New Deal will do a few nice things when what will really save human society from ecological doom will be a transition to ecosocialism. The class struggle couldn't be clearer: it's capital, especially fossil capital, or us.

Trump initially blamed state officials for poor forest management in exacerbating the fires and threatened to cut off federal funding. He's since signed an emergency declaration and toured the devastated areas Saturday with Brown and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom.

It was beneath her, and it only proved how ignorant she is. She accused them of being ageist, inexperienced, and unwillingly to pay their dues. Other dumb fools include Rob Reiner and Bill Maher. The irony is that they still think they are "cool and edgy politically" when they really have turned into old farts.
