Went and voted because of some shady ballot initiatives that needed to be defeated but I didn't have a single person or thing to vote for.

Not one.

I've been tapping out for a while now because I've just been so disgusted and discouraged by my lack of any real choice. (but I missed you guys so bad to pop in at least today!)

I'm tired of choosing between a throat punch and a kick in the nads.

Other than that hows everyone been? Smile

I don't watch the returns anymore. Just don't see the point. Read a tweet about a democrat running on helping Bush with the Iraq war plans. Yay! Vote for me,

How deeply the Regan Republicans have infiltrated the democratic party.

I gave up any hope for change when they stole the primary from the progressives and nobody did anything.

Until there is a third party or some paradigm altering event I don't so the point in even participating in this farce anymore.

My sole litmus test for candidates in this cycle was if they were an incumbent I was voting against them regardless of party.

The sole exception being the Scott/Nelson race.

Nelson may be useless but I'm positive Scott is a reptilian... Smile

Yep. He's a democrat so it's all good. Even though he votes with republicans most of the time, but he lives in a deep red state so this is what we can expect from those types of democrats right?

I cannot wrap my brain around this type of thinking.

@Alphalop

I’m not following the election coverage tonight either.

Our next door neighbors had a large diamondback rattlesnake on their back patio last night, right by their back door. Their new puppy was nearly bitten when she opened the door to let him out, but she saw the snake in time and got the pup back in the door and quickly closed it.

The snake was then all riled up, and began striking at the glass door and rattling like mad. It was quite agitated. Usually when I’ve seen them they are lying stretched out or hiding under a bush. This guy was really upset and angry. She videoed the thing and texted it to us while waiting for the emergency snake removal guy to get there. Scary as hell.

I’ve spent today wondering if we should sell this house and move farther into town. We won’t. But my feelings of safety at our home have been shaken with this reminder. I worry about our dogs. We have “snakeproofed” the back yard, but it’s not completely secure and never will be. Sigh.

It’s a silly problem I suppose. But it somehow feels more real and significant than the elections.

How have you been? What’s new?

Alphalop's picture

@CS in AZ

I have a black racer that lives on my property which helps keep away other poisonous snakes (they eat other snakes and reptiles).

I keep a little 22 pistol with snake loads on it just in case though, had a much bigger problem with them in Nevada but if I move into the county that could change.

Not a lot new here, just been doing a bit of woodworking and still fighting to get the cops to do something about a contractor that stole an $8k deposit from me.

Thay and thinking I may need to sell my home.

The city decided we needed city water and sewer in our neighborhood (even though nobody wanted it) and they are charging us about $28k for the privilege. (plus 3 more bills that I didn't have for water, sewer and irrigation.)

This translates out to an additional $330/mo to my housing expenses which I simply can't afford on my pension.

It's bad enough that they make you assume a service you neither want nor need, but to have to pay for the construction of it via special property tax assessment is just weak.

It's like if Dominos showed up at my house with one of thier shitty pizzas that I didn't order and expected me to pay not only for it but the car they drove it over in.

Not sure what to do other than sell.

Sucks too because all my fruit trees I planted when I bought the home are now nice and mature and really cranking out the fruit, lol!

I think I need to find a new planet, this one's broken.

I'm sure it's occurred to you already, but couldn't that be a galvanizing issue for you to coalesce your community around in solidarity against the local government (assuming it's neighborhood-wide)?

If everyone's in the same boat maybe there's a movement waiting to be coalesced.

Just galls me to see how little power we have in these instances.

I should talk. I've been incensed for years about how arbitrary it seems Con Edison, the monopoly power company for NYC, tallies up our monthly bills. I live on the top floor of a 3 story building which gets ample sunlight all day, that I hardly ever turn on a light during the daytime. Yet my bills are still ridiculous. Have a friend who used to be abroad for half the year, but still her bills would be not inconsiderable.

It's organized crime. The fucking CEO of ConEd makes something like $15 million a year! Is that what we're paying for? Just another clear reminder that any sector of which we all rely upon should be a publicly-owned non-profit. Not to mention if we didn't waste trillions (TRILLIONS!) of dollars on the Defense Budget/Pentagon imperialism, AND, started collecting all the Wall St and Corporate America criminal money laundered offshore in tax havens, we could pay for all this shit, including free healthcare and college, many times over.

@Mark from Queens oh, there was lots of opposition.

We fought them for almost 10 years but they finally expanded everywhere else.

Their biggest claim was they had to expand it to make it "cost effective".

Not very cost effective for me or my one neighbor of almost 10 years ago just had to sell his house.

They had a new baby 2 years ago and couldn't afford it either.

This was an amazing neighborhood built around a school with shopping in walking distance while still feeling secluded, a rarity for a solid blue collar neighborhood.

That's problem most likely.

Was too nice of a place for the poors, better price them out...

"shoot on" -- also variously called "three and you're in" or "five and you're in".

one person played goalie, and the rest of the kids took turns shooting on the goalie -- usually, a rubber ball or tennis ball, shot with a hockey stick. whoever scored three (or five) goals switched places with the goalie, and the counts were reset. the only protective gear the goalie had was a stick (rarely a goalie stick) and a baseball mitt.

needless to say, the shot to the nads was the ever-present and always-feared outcome. once, however, i took a tennis ball right on the adam's apple. that was an eye-opener, literally. my eyes went wide, but for a few seconds i could not see -- or at least, i couldn't see what was in front of me. instead, i saw pastel spirals, just like in the cartoons.

one of the most frightening moments of my life, as waited those few seconds for my vision to switch back on.

the only place I'd probably go to watch coverage (having Jimmy Dore on would have sealed the deal, otherwise not so sure, especially if they've got that superlame Neoliberal douche with the beard, Michael Shure maybe?). Amy with Scahill and Greenwald (presumably, or Lee Fang, or maybe Brihanna Gray even?) would also be good.

But I really do, for the maybe the first time I can remember ever since first starting to really follow politics intensely, not have any interest in following it tonight. It's like facing an addiction. Or getting word that coffee, spicy/acidic food and alcohol are bad for you. I've had to cut some of that stuff out (acid reflux) but haven'e been able to do all of it, so gave up at least one of the vices and sharply cut down the others. Gave up politics on this Midterm Election Night. Not even tempted to pull up those incredible NY Times up-to-the-minute poll results. It's all pro sports-style coverage now.

So I'm glad in a way for those who are, so you can filter out all the BS for us.

But cyberstrike, you still dig Sam Seder? He and the other guy David Packman lost me, when they went on the attack against Dore. Nope. Liked 'em both. But it's been building for a while. Their Neoliberal colors have being shining through much too bright these past couple of years, and they fell for the $hilling when the chips were down. Done with them both.

Best Of The Left podcast leans a little too much on Packman. Really like BOTL, but haven't listened in some time. Wonder if he's still heavy on Packman and Seder. Or is he bringing in more progressive, radical voices like Kyle Kulinski, the Rational National, Tim Black, Lee Camp, and of course, Jimmy Dore, who is still my go-to guy? Citations Needed, with Adam Johnson, who writes for FAIR among others, is excellent too.

I can relate to every part of this. But I have to say, I’m finding it far easier to give up political team sports than spicy foods or alcohol. I don’t like the taste of coffee but I did enjoy caffeine in other vehicles. That was the one I pretty much gave up. So far.

Quitting politics... well, that would be a lot more difficult without c99%. But for me it is not so hard really because I don’t like team sports anyway so it wasn’t a big leap once I realized what is going on. Which took awhile. I really do regret right now every dollar and minute of my time that I devoted to electing mr hope n change. I was so filled with happiness and excitement about politics and the future on election night 2008. Ten years after... and I’m just done. 2016 was the end of the line for me, I saw behind the curtain and now it just doesn’t work anymore.

Grateful for c99 and a place to say freely that I don’t give a shit about this election or if “we” vote “them” out or not. I’m not part of the “we” in that sentence. I’m just looking forward to a reprieve from the relentless harassment and political advertising.

Here's the link to KSL if you're interested. Not much movement on medical marijuana but it's still up by a good margin.

Oh FFS! This fcuking state.

Regardless of the final outcome of the vote, however, state lawmakers are expected to convene soon in an effort to pass a compromise bill agreed to by major supporters and opponents of Proposition 2, effectively replacing the ballot initiative.

Opposition to the initiative intensified in late summer. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in August urged the state's voters to reject Proposition 2 and emailed its Utah members with the same message.

At that time, the church joined a broad coalition that included state lawmakers, business leaders, the Utah Medical Association and the Utah Sheriff's Association to say that while there is a recognizable benefit to medical marijuana, Proposition 2 did not include enough safeguards to protect against troublesome youth access and unfettered recreational use.

Beginning in September, Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes convened private talks between the initiative campaign, the Utah Medical Association, the church and others to see whether a compromise could be reached.

So much for the will of the voters. Who the hell made this decision? I certainly didn't and don't want it made. Why the hell vote then if they can do whatever they want? The Moran church should have no say in this. Whatever. My pain doc is okay with it. Safeguards so Troublesome Youth can't get access to it. Hello? Young people have been smoking it since like forever and know where to get it. Read the article and see how stupid this is.

the primary to challenge Scott Walker, is going to lose.

He's down by a couple of thousand votes, and the remaining uncounted precincts are almost all red.

Poor Dane County finds itself again, leading the charge, with no support from behind. Turnout was extraordinary -- looks like about 290K, compared with about 255K in 2014. Milwaukee County, on the other hand, saw a drop (though a much bigger drop for Walker than for the Dem).

8 long years we've been at the mercy of this gangster, and it's going to go on for another 4. pardon me while i puke.

@Not Henry Kissinger
I don't know how evers pulled it out at the end, i went to bed rather than watch the last numbers trickle in. Since I didn't take a snapshot before going to bed, I don't know where those votes came from. There are one or two southwestern counties that turned blue to red later in the evening. When I hit the sack, the blue/red map looked almost identical to 2014, except for two counties -- Kenosha (near the Foxconn plant) and one of the southwest counties. This morning, looks like Evers ended up almost sweeping the southwest, which implies to me that the outstanding precincts there must have been mostly urban (including two UW college towns, Platteville and Lacrosse).

Still, it was an enormous comeback for him across a sea of outstanding red precincts in the rural north. I think Evers was down 1,000 votes with the two of them sitting at around 1,150,000 each. The final tally is 1,324,648 to 1,293,799, so Evers took the last 300K votes with a very large margin -- 175K to 125K. When I hit the sack, I didn't think there were still 300K votes out there, and I'm actually a bit mystified as to where they all came from.

Hmm, okay, so I just checked and they're reporting 394K votes cast in Milwaukee county. However, when I tuned out last night, Milwaukee was showing 100% of precincts counted, and fewer votes cast than in 2014 (which was 368K). So I don't know what the hell happened, but that explains almost everything. I remember that when I checked, Evers had about 8K fewer Milwaukee votes than Mary Burke won in 2014, while Walker had 16K fewer -- so, a net gain for the Dems, but not nearly enough to bridge the 136K vote gap from 2014. This morning, they're showing Evers with 32K more votes than Burke, and Walker with 8K fewer. That's the whole difference, right there. Evers gained 32K votes on Walker in Milwaukee after I thought the county was done. Which happens to be, BTW, almost exactly the margin by which he won.

So, i don't know. I was driving to work thinking how tired I am of living in this political prison that Wisconsin voters have built for all of us, cinder block by cinder block, out of their hatred, ignorance, selfishness, fear, and general contempt for humanity. Now, we've got a divided government. In fact, the Republicans gained seats in the state senate, and will probably hold steady or gain in the assembly. Just to give you a sense of how egregiously gerrymandered this state is, consider that the "outgoing" assembly, elected in 2016, had a 64-35 Republican majority despite the fact that the state's electorate is just about as evenly split across the duopoly as one can imagine. The loss of the Senate seats (staggered 4 year terms) almost guarantees that, even in the face of an actual Blue wave in 2020, the GOP will have control of the redistricting process after the 2020 census. Oh, joy.

Similarly, our congressional representation is 5-3 GOP, despite Baldwin's handy Senate victory. (Nobody even bothered to run against Democrat Mark Pocan, who won 300K+ votes, while Gwen Moore took the District 1 seat with 208K versus 60K GOP, 7K "other".)

One hundred and forty Reichsmark (RM 140) in 1931 — what would that be worth in today’s dollars? It depends heavily on what one uses as a measure of constant value.

One inflation-tracking website using conventional exchange rates pegs the amount at a bit more than $740.

This website, on the other hand, uses historical precious-metal prices and Swedish statistics re purchasing power and hourly wages to come up with answers ranging from around $480 to as high as $2800:
http://www.historicalstatistics.org/Currencyconverter.html

No matter which figure one takes, that’s a lot of money for a kid as innocent and inexperienced as Emil to be carrying around in cash!

It’s about the Benjamins — about those pinholes in the Benjamins, to be precise. Too bad for Mister “Grundeis.”

I don't understand the meaning of your last sentence. Sigh. I never learn.

Wikipedia:

With regards to Sam Seder...i do have issues with him being a bit too center left for my liking, but he actually does have a good read into what conventional liberals are thinking at the moment.

Michael Brooks and Jamie Peck are also a good reason why I listen to the show. The Antifada podcast and the Michael Brooks Show are pretty decent, imo.

I ignore the Jimmy Dore/Sam Seder beef. It's a fight over tactics. And I see fights like that to be administrative minutia in regards to the struggle against fascism and neoliberalism.

I haven't watched David Pakman since he made some very questionable statements about Bernie Sanders and leftism in general.
