Wonder If Kos Is Having Second Thoughts?

As an Admin. for Street Prophets and Shamrock American Kossacks I have ties over at Daily Kos that I really can't break. I must say however all of us at Street Prophets really miss having our own space on the web and not being tied to Daily Kos. We were shut down when DK4 took place. A lot of promises were made but none kept. Ojibwa made sure I stayed by making me an Admin.

What a difference a year makes. Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day and at this time last year there were lots of Irish themed diaries. There were tons of comments and people had fun. This year there were two diaries, both of them mine. One was with Irish recipes at http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/03/17/1502428/-Some-St-Patrick-s-Day-... and the other was the Street Prophets Coffee Hour that I do on Thursday with Irish Blessings at http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/03/17/1502445/-Irish-Blessings-and-Wi....

It looks like all traffic is way down over there and Kos may have really screwed up big time. He has screwed up before but this time I don't think he is going to recover. I'll tell you if I were a C.E.O. there and someone made such a boneheaded move that pushed and angered so many people away that person would be fired. From a business point of view this is a disaster in the making. You need subscribers and this purge has driven away more people then just those in danger of being banned. I have noticed in the last year or so that there has been a big exodus in many groups I used to write for. The place is just too toxic.

With having to be a 24/7 caregiver and one whose has been battling flu like symptoms since February 6th I just don't have the strength or inclination to try and cope with the mess over there. I am thankful to the people here for opening up a place to be that is non-toxic. Princess Pixie also appreciates it since it keeps mommy calmer.

Poor Johnny is going to need a rest home after the wish list we all gave him.

Actually, many users experienced in the ways of Drupal are arising and offering assistance. I've considered setting up a dummy webserver and running Drupal on it myself to improve myself for assistance in this work.

It's not all on Johnny, and it won't be. And shouldn't be.

One more reason why we own this site: we take ownership of it whenever and wherever we can. Something you're not even allowed to do at "That Other Place" (TOP), yet we are crashing the gates to be allowed to do it here.

c99p will be here for many years to come. I wouldn't be surprised to see articles here about the complete demise of certain other websites......

12 years...I guess a lot of us joined during the Howard Dean era...

I remember having an argument with my brother when Dean dropped out. I told him that Kerry would lose and he thought I was crazy, but I warned him anyway. Kerry didn't inspire people and no one would make an effort to go vote for him. It wasn't that anyone loved W, it just that Kerry didn't drive any enthusiasm. Aaaaand...we got 4 more years of W. Did anyone on the democratic side learn a lesson from that? No.

I feel like I'm watching it happen again this time around, only so, SO much worse. The only difference is that I held my nose and voted for Kerry. Won't do that for Clinton.

...was that I knocked myself out for that Milquetoast. I donated $$$$, I canvassed the precinct for weeks, I phone-banked, I hosted phone-banking parties. On election day I hosted 12/13 people from 5 states at my house to do more phone calling, go out and get people to the polls, drive them to the polls when necessary, bought the crew breakfast, lunch and dinner, and endless coffee. Some of the mob from far away had to sleep on the sofas and floor because it was too late for them to go home. Just imagine how much it costs to feed 15 people for a day or so. We had the highest voter turnout in years.

I did all that happily. Happily!

Then Ohio looked very shaky, very shady, and that sack-o-shit didn't utter the slightest peep about a recount. Not a word.

[can't go on with this... blood pressure.]

John Kerry. Some big bad stuff obviously went down in Ohio and he just walked away. My theory has always been that his vanity was more important to him than the integrity of the electoral process - he just didn't want to be categorized as a "sore loserman" like Al Gore. One of the reasons I initially liked John Edwards on the next go-round is that according to all reports, he wanted to fight the Ohio battle.

Like an old, comfortable shoe that I click without a second thought. I turned up there reading/lurking during the 2008 cycle. I'd read some off and on almost since their inception, but I never thought the site really hit its stride until about 2006-2007. I started reading it religiously during those primaries. I actually had another login for awhile, but I didn't use it after I signed on as me in late 2010. Been there just about daily ever since, mostly because there for awhile, you could really get some good information there and you really felt like you belonged to something, albeit in a small way.

I liken it now to a Trial Balloon Farm, where good ones that fly there go onto the Corporate News Cycle, and bad ones go to die. Still some good tidbits now and then, but (and especially in the last six months) far too toxic for good people to get sucked into. And honestly, sometimes I wonder if there's not more to it. I remember back in the 80s, when FOX News was first really taking off, being "hooked" on them for awhile. It didn't take me long to realize they were bullshitters, but all the same, it took patience to break the actual habit. I literally felt a little withdrawal. And so it will go here, I am sure. That's kind of creepy, I hope I just have an overactive imagination! That being said, I also feel an immense anger, even though I haven't been there as long as others here. Because that little loser really squandered an opportunity, and probably just to feed his bank account and his obvious Napoleon complex.

I know many people and friends-of-friends who are involved, issue-oriented activists or politically active and involved, and *none* of them read Daily Kos. Most people I talk to or ask about it have not even heard of it, most who do know of it consider it just another place like Huffington Post, essentially an online tabloid. Which is pretty much what it is now. In fact that place is not anywhere near as significant as they like to tell themselves.

"toeing the Noted Line so that we might be permitted to remain there" because its importance is immense?)

Learn how to be a good citizen, and all that? Pure propaganda. Shit, even the nickname of "Kossack" has its own little weird association. Very 1984-ish, IMO....

Action - make sure in all your communications on line, you are clear about your experience about TOP. ( like that description)

Have a few lines you can clip & copy into every communication, kinda like a tag line, make clear you will stop posting it by a certain date. Clarify your experience with the purpose of discrediting Kos and TOP. Direct your friends to find you here, Caucus99percent ( two birds, etc.)

After posting those lines on FB, Twitter, where ever you are a presence on line, make sure it clarifies that TOP does not represent you or your views and you will not be participating there at all.

Don't know whether it's worth it to go into "exploitation" as everybody seems to do that now.

Creepy to think other online places would think TOP represents who they are pretending to represent: new & better Democrats, NOT.

He has zero respect for those who provide him with free content and his whole business model from top to bottom is a parasitic one.

Yohannon's picture

I first checked out the DailyKos in 2005. Set up an account in 2007. Ironically I started to write more diaries in the last few months trying to find my way politically, and to try and work out my concerns about Hillary.

Of course I've been "timed out" more times in the last 3 months than the prior 9 years. In fact, I've been put on TO 7 times for some of the most absurd excuses, though at least once I almost asked for it by stating that I refused to "coalesce" around a single candidate until, you know, the race was over.

The prior 9 years? Once, about three years ago and I STILL don't know what that was about (seriously, I was just sent a message about "not cheering for prison rape" with zero context. I for the life of me could not think of when I would do such a thing, unless I uprated a snarky comment alluding to the topic and that was enough. :P)

But the Lord of the Rings parody that got the author banned today pretty much pushed me over the edge. I think I have to walk away from the derision and mockery of the Hill People (even as they screamed the equivalent of "I know you are, but what are us?!" at me) and the fact that it looks like Kos sold his soul to Sauron for that "place at the table" people keep talking about, whatever THAT means. much cared for Markos' first thoughts. Why should I care now, if he has second thoughts? It's his business and platform. The content of his blog DID NOT belong to him, as much his software set-up tries to make it feel like it was,. He didn't allow commentators to redact or edit their own comments and his loyalist famous supporters discouraged other people from erasing their diaries. So, that is now coming back at him like a boomerang. It's a business model that has outlasted its usefulness, imo.

I've never looked at this before, but it's interesting. This data makes me wonder if The Great Purge was actually a publicity stunt? If so, it seems to have been successful, at least in the short term. So many people moving to Reddit and posting links back to DKos on there could be a factor; Reddit is yuuuuge. But the curiosity and outrage will fade. Long-term effects remain to be seen, but I doubt there will be big change overall.

I'm certain that Kos is not having any second thoughts about this. He could not care less about the exodus.

I have not even looked over there today, first day off it, feels OK. I really only read diaries anyway, and learned so much. But I started surfing that site in maybe 2009 looking for an alternative to main stream media crap and party only politics. It introduced a new world of color design letting me work with an author to get together to create the beauty of an work of art. I will admit I make real sock monkeys however there is just me of DKOS.
