UK fighter jets scrambled to intercept Russian bombers

Two Russian Bear long-range bombers flying close to UK airspace were intercepted by RAF Typhoon fighter jets, according to Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The Typhoons were scrambled from bases at Lossiemouth in Scotland and Coningsby in eastern England on Wednesday after the Russian bombers were detected flying over the Channel to the south of the UK, the MoD said.

"The Russian planes were escorted by the RAF until they were out of the UK area of interest,” the ministry’s Thursday statement said, Reuters reported. “At no time did the Russian military aircraft cross into UK sovereign airspace."

NATO nations have been worried by Moscow having increased its air patrols near their borders. There were 100 intercepts of Russian aircraft in 2014 - three times as many as 2013 - according to British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon.

This is how a police state protects “secrets”: Jeffrey Sterling, the CIA and up to 80 years on circumstantial evidence

Sterling's conviction should chill anyone who believes in investigative reporting in a free society

The participants in the economy of shared tips and intelligence in Washington D.C., breathed a collective sigh of relief when, on January 12, the government announced it would not force James Risen to testify in the trial of former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling. “Press freedom was safe! Our trade in leaks is safe!” observers seemed to conclude, and they returned to their squalid celebration of an oppressive Saudi monarch.

That celebration about information sharing is likely premature. Because, along the way to the conviction of Sterling this week on all nine counts – including seven counts under the Espionage Act — something far more banal yet every bit as dear to D.C.’s economy of secrets may have been criminalized: unclassified tips.

To understand why that’s true, you need to know a bit about how the Department of Justice larded on charges against Sterling to get to what represents a potential 80-year maximum sentence (though he’s unlikely to get that). Sterling was accused — and ultimately convicted — of leaking two related things: First, information about the Merlin operation to deal flawed nuclear blueprints to Iran, as well as the involvement of a Russian engineer referred to as Merlin in the trial. In addition to that, the government charged Sterling separately for leaking a document (one which the FBI never found, in anyone’s possession): a letter Merlin included along with the nuclear blueprints he wrapped in a newspaper and left in the mailbox of Iran’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency. So the government convicted Sterling of leaking two things: information about the operation, and a letter that was used in the operation.

Then, having distinguished the operation from the letter, DOJ started multiplying. They charged Sterling for leaking the operation to Risen, then charged him for causing Risen to attempt to write a 2003 New York Times article about it, then charged him for causing Risen to publish a book chapter about it: one leak, three counts of espionage.

When Shock and Awe Turns 12

Shock and Awe is having a troubled adolescence. The U.S. government is killing children with flying robot death planes, keeping troops in 175 countries, actively using “special” forces in 150 countries, asking us to ignore what it’s done to Libya so that we’ll support more wars, going silent on Yemen as the supposed model of a country that U.S. warmaking improved rather than ruined, turning down an offer from North Korea to halt nuclear tests, continuing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with no end in sight and no longer any pretense of Congressional or United Nations approval, oscillating on the question of starting a war on Iran (and inviting a foreign leader to give Congress its marching orders), actively antagonizing Russia and sending troops to Ukraine, building new nukes, proposing to enlarge the world’s largest military budget next year, and avoiding all accountability for such horrors as human experimentation at Guantanamo.

Nasty vicious celebrations of murder and torture are dominating U.S. entertainment. The militarized thinking and weaponry are reaching local police departments. A jury just convicted a whistleblower on zero evidence for allegedly revealing that the CIA had given nuclear weapons plans (with flaws added) to Iran. The earth’s climate is going crazy, and the single biggest thing we do to worsen that crisis (war) is also the single greatest diversion of resources away from addressing it.

Admit it, if your 11-year-old boy or girl caused a fraction of this sort of trouble, you’d be worried. But you’d also see through to the better tendencies. The U.S. public said no to a war on Syria in 2013. And while it said OK to a war in 2014 it imagined a short, cheap, harmless, beneficial war. It doesn’t want a war on Iran or Russia. It doesn’t want this level of military spending. It favors non-military solutions whenever they are possible, as of course they always are, regardless of what Barbara Boxer might say.

Shock and Awe needs an initiation into a healthier adulthood. Luckily there is a peace movement planning an intervention for Shock and Awe’s 12th birthday, coming up March 18-21 in Washington, D.C.

Insane U.S. Oil Glut Wars
“The destruction of energy exporting economies will only intensify the global recession that has already begun.”

The people that rule the United States have determined that, the only way for the U.S. to maintain its hegemony in the world is to engineer the economic collapse of its rivals. The likelihood that such economic warfare will wind up dragging the entire planet into chaos and catastrophe does not seems to phase the Lords of Capital, who are so rich they can only be made poor at the point of a firing squad. Having surpassed Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world’s biggest producer of oil and natural gas, the Americans are now flooding the planet with fuel that no one needs in order to keep prices so low that Russia, Iran and Venezuela will suffer regime change. Washington is also eager to deploy its military and dirty tricks of all kinds to break its rivals’ will to resist U.S. empire.

The problem is, it’s very difficult to aim an oil and gas weapon. The effects tend to be general, rather than targeted. It’s kind of like poison gas; the wind blows death into everybody’s face, including the guy who popped the canister. The Americans have soaked the entire world with gasoline, and now they’re running around with matches between their fingers, laughing like maniacs, thinking they have the ultimate power because they can burn the whole place down. Yes, it is conceivable that the regimes in Russia, Iran and Venezuela could be brought low, broken, through years of depressed prices – but oil and gas prices can only be kept low if the world economy is also depressed, locked in stagnation. The destruction of energy exporting economies will only intensify the global recession that has already begun. Chaos, instability, unintended – and even unimaginable – consequences will surely characterize the next, purposely created crisis: a deliberate economic crime against humanity.

“Oil and gas prices can only be kept low if the world economy is also depressed, locked in stagnation.”

It has already become clear to the nations of the Caribbean and Central America that the disruptions imposed by the oil glut go beyond the drilling platforms of Venezuela. The 17 members of Petrocaribe have for years enjoyed access to Venezuelan fuel at cut-rate prices, with the best of credit terms, as part of the socialist country’s policy of solidarity with its neighbors. Venezuela even accepted payment in commodities, a kind of barter system. The Petrocaribe program was losing Venezuela about $2.3 billion a year, and with the collapse in world prices, Venezuela may have to scale back its generosity. Meanwhile, the U.S. is licking its chops, hoping to make the whole region dependent on American liquefied natural gas. But, we all know what dependence on the United States means in the Caribbean and Central America. It means the end of sovereignty, the end of dignity, and the certainty of continued misery for the masses of the people.

I'm not so sure the ruling class isn't engineering an economic collapse in this country. Certainly for the bottom 70-80%.
The thing to keep in mind is the New World Order. There are way too many references to it from the ruling class to think it's nothing. A big part is the currency issue, the U.S. dollar as the dominant reserve currency or do they transition to something else. There certainly appears to be conditions in place to crash the U.S. economy as well.

on these economic issues. I am sure that somehow the petrodollar plays an important part. Right before we took down Saddam Hussein, he was talking about switching to the euro for oil trade. I recently read somewhere that Iran is considering a similar switch which makes me wonder if that is a big part of the current warmongering in Congress.

Newman's presentation includes a wonderfully humorous segment about the important role the petrodollar plays for U.S. hegemony, drawing an analogy to Salvador Dali.

if you can believe this, we've still got that plague that started when you were here in Portland. It's low level now, we've been able to get around for the last two or three weeks but it sure is lingering. I like running but haven't been able to yet. Glad you didn't get it! Shaharazade is reading that Piketty book. Thank god for the library!

and my convoluted question, and your answer (below)

. . . twitter or tweet (but I do chirp when I'm hungry) so I have no idea what you're asking for but there are many modules (Drupal apps) that are designed for twittering, when you are ready be more specific in what you are asking for and I'm sure we can fix you up.

if I just leave out the extraneous and long-winded explanation (as to why I like to Tweet the video/audio links), I was basically trying to ask if a "Tweet" would post here.

Just now I copied a Wesley Lowery Tweet from one of my blogs (WordPress), and it didn't work either in the body of a comment, or in the url box.

So, if at all possible, it would be great to have that capacity.

(A screenshot alone would not offer the capability of listening to the audio or video, of course.)

Does that make more sense?

Gotta run into town for now, but hope to drop in this evening, or very early morning.

Thanks for all you do.

Hey, I'll be cross-posting soon--if push comes to shove, I can always just provide a link to my Tweet at my own blog. I don't expect you to "move Heaven and Earth" to make this work.

Just thought I'd ask if a module exists that would be simply to install.

Thanks, again.

I'm so thrilled, since it's been months since I was put on their list.

Anyhoo, I'm going to set up the account when we get in later this evening. We're very security conscious--don't even do chat, Skype, etc.

And this service sounds like a real Godsend.

So, has anyone else here used it?

The encryption/security is setup so that the service does not retain the user's information, therefore, unlike Gmail, etc., they can't release your private information to anyone.

(I'll report back on how it works for us.)

Apparently, when the developers set out to raise $100,000, they raised over $500,000. The service gained a quarter of a million users by August 2014.

Fingers crossed!

others in welcoming all the new members.

There are so many, won't try to tick off all the names.

Having been a little scarce (for me), I've seen 4-5 names show up at a time.

Anyhoo, "the more, the merrier"--Welcome!

remember, either.

My blogging is still scaled back (and disjointed)--I hardly can keep up with where I am, and when!

Anyhoo, I love your beautiful photos, and look forward to seeing them posted here.

(I'll be posting a great Yahoo News photo, soon. I'm waiting until the first of March--when the Alaskan Iditarod Race begins, to repost it, here. I think some of you pros will agree, it's pretty cool. Of course, the photographer is a pro, also.)
