The Basic Problem in political debate is that partisan commentary
reliably devolves into crap, because the goal is not to further understanding or enlightenment as one would do if one were discussing something concrete like how cancer cells mutate, but rather to further some political goal that underlies the conversation. So it's not honest to begin with. The goal is: I want my guy to win and I will distort everything you say or do in furtherance of that goal.
Not that long ago, my husband and I watched the movie The Best of Enemies about the blood feud between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley - conservative versus liberal during the 1968 political season. What struck us both was that while there were plenty of personal jabs and bon mots, the participants tried to keep their arguments grounded in logic overall. We found it so interesting that we started to watch a few old Firing Line episodes on Netflix or Amazon. We were pretty much amazed at how people of vastly different political persuasions were still able to sit in the same room and have debate/argument about ISSUES and remain polite. Look up some ancient Meet the Press tapes and you'll find the same thing is true. At least the participants had the self awareness and honor not to be willing to push points that were recognizably different from recent common shared experience. They didn't attempt to rewrite history in real time. I simply can't respect people who spin and frame when I KNOW they know better. Low information, low curiosity, bad reasoning is one thing, deliberate manipulation of facts is another.

To paraphrase Obi-Wan...
Rational discourse: an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.
I always thought that Jonathan Stewart did liberals a huge
disservice when he managed to shut down Crossfire on CNN. He objected to the yelling. The conservatives WERE LOSING, very publicly. Their arguments were devoid of logic and reasoning. Carlson and Novak were disemboweled publicly every single night. The discussions were based on defending the logic of your side which has not happened since in the marketplace of ideas on Tee Vee. Stewart objected to the yelling. Too bad he didn't listen to the words. We lost the words so that people could speak lies in a conversational tone. Big, big, loss.

Another great moment in political debate was Strange Bedfellows
when Al Franken and Arianna Huffington attempted to give offer political commentary while posed in a bed as a couple with opposing political viewpoints. Of course Al the Liberal triumphed.

I don't remember if "Best of Enemies" went into it
but the Buckley-Vidal dust-up was THE beginning of the end of the old, mannered, debate-y style.
Because: RATINGS GOLD, friends and broadcasters. Within just a few years you get Point-Counterpoint and "Jane, you ignorant slut!"
And a couple years after that you get "Network," which should win one of the all-time prizes for forecasting the future...
Well in the movie they posit that ABC (I think) put it on
in desperation to fill air time because they didn't have the gravitas filled headliners of the other networks. Some have called it the beginning of pundit TV. One thing that stands out like a sore thumb is the incredible elitism of both men and the clenched jaw back bay Katharine Hepburn accents are just crazy. But like I said, they at least tried to make sure that their commentary made logical sense and had some reasonable or historical base.
Yeah, Network will never grow old. Paddy Cheyefsky, Clifford Odets, Steinbeck - their writings are timeless because they were writing about sh*t we're still dealing with.

Ah, I recall Mr. Veedle...

What's scary about that skit is that it sums up the future of our future political discourse perfectly.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
