Business Degrees Are Bullshit

I communicate with my grandmother via email from time to time. In the last email exchange we had we talked about my long-term joblessness situation and returning to college. She actually suggested I go into something more 'marketable' like 'business'. I told her database work and programming are some of the few things I'm actually decent at.

Of course, deep down I was tempted to tell her flat out that the only reason one goes into business school is to learn how to commit criminal acts (and make a killing while you're at it) and not get caught. I don't have the lobes for business and I sure as shit don't have the stomach for the kind of criminality those bastards engage in with crappy products and services as their front.

The only reason I'm even going back to school anyway is because I literally have NO-FUCKING-WHERE-ELSE to go. You think I'm kidding? Try coming down to Brevard County, Flawer'Duh some time and all you'll see is store fronts, restaurants and all other manner of service bullshit where the pigs pocket all the profits.

I'm sick of this shit.

I sadly know nothing about Florida, or how to help, but know that I'm pulling for you, and hope that you can find a way to escape from the system, at least as much as you can.

I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

every other day to me and accuses me to be an ally of the biggest shitters in the world.

In that context I like to point to Hedges article: The Con of Diversity. Joe posted it a couple of day ago on the EB's section "Also of Interest". It spoke to me for obvious reasons. This might not be relating to what makes YOU sick so much, but more what makes ME and HIM sick so much.

So forgive me, if put that kind of off-topic comment here.

“You do not take a man who for years has been hobbled by chains, liberate him, bring him to the starting line of a race, saying, ‘You are free to compete with all the others,’ and still justly believe you have been completely fair … ,” President Lyndon Johnson said in 1965 to the graduating class of Howard University. “This is the next and more profound stage of the battle for civil rights. We seek not just freedom but opportunity—not just legal equity but human ability—not just equality as a right and a theory, but equality as a fact and as a result.”

Johnson’s call, along with that of Martin Luther King Jr., was swiftly sabotaged by white, liberal elites, who divorced racial justice from economic justice. White liberals could live with laws prohibiting segregation but not with giving up some of their financial and social privilege.

“White liberals are not seeking justice,” Ford said. “They’re seeking absolution. Anything that absolves them of responsibility for what this society has done, they welcome it. They’re hungry for it.”

Hope that helps. You are not alone. What ever makes us sick. Being sick is just a miserable condition.

Hope you can heal a little bit at least. Kiss 3

I do database work and custom programming for $75 per hour through an online freelancing site. I also have a business degree and do marketing consulting for technology businesses at the same rate. As far as I know, I've never committed any criminal acts related to my business education or my self-taught computer skills.

@edg And as far as freelance work goes, don't you have to pay a good chunk of money to staffing agencies before they'll even get you jobs?

Modern education is little more than toeing the line for the capitalist pigs.

If so, I’d start by going for a permanent job in a tech hub like Seattle/Bellevue, Austin, Triangle Park, Portland, Boston or somewhere (The Valley is too expensive). Ignore the body shops (they are thieves) and just look directly at corporate web sites. Work LinkedIn, find something you like the look of. And keep trying. Oh, and take an on line machine learning class. I just took the coursera one but that one is a bit dated so look around. Databases and ML are a hot topic these days.

I also replied to you in another story with some advice about coop business structure but I’d find friends to go in with on a venture that (complementary skill sets are very useful). It’s hard to do that though without contacts and the best way to make contacts is through a few years of regular work.

Lastly, you need to be able to at least fake drinking the kool-aid at some of these places. As Ed was hinting, your rage (justified though it may be) is a liability here.

Good luck - I hate to see smart people as frustrated as you seem to be.

"Regular Work" has been damn impossible to find because Flawer'Duh is a literal retirement wasteland. As far as leaving goes, I have no way out. My partner would never leave FL and her mother would never let her leave.

The closest thing we have to tech businesses down here is Northrop Grumann, and they literally moved people here from out of state rather than actually hiring locally. Fuckin' pigs.

The site I work with charges a percentage of billed hours but only on actual earnings. There are no upfront fees with legitimate freelance agencies. I pay 20% for the 1st $500 earned, then 10%, and then 5% for earning over $10,000 with the same client.
