Texas Concentration Camp opens
U.S. Opens New Concentration Camp for Immigrants on Texas-Mexico Border
The U.S. government gave its new children’s prison the innocuous-sounding name “South Texas Family Residential Center.” Articles in the mainstream media invariably describe its “medical care and counselors, trailer classrooms, library and email access, and a basketball court and playgrounds...”—as if the federal government contracted the infamous CCA (Corrections Corporation of America, which should more accurately be known as the Concentration Camps of Amerikkka), to build a summer camp or recreation center for poor kids. But a lawyer who has struggled to represent immigrant families held in Artesia, New Mexico, and other locations spoke to the reality of the Dilley prison: “I’m at a loss for words to imagine what Dilley will look like with so many 6-year-olds detained behind razor wire.”
The Trump/Sessions' No tolerance immigration policy sounds beyond heinous, doesn't it? But guess what? This article was written on December 22, 2014. This happened during Obama's presidency when he was deporting immigrants at a record pace. We had been told that he too would only focus on deporting immigrants who had criminal records, but 56% of those who were deported had no criminal records.
On December 14, Jeh Johnson, Secretary of Homeland Security in the Obama administration, travelled to Dilley, Texas, to announce the opening of a new detention center for immigrants, primarily immigrant women and children. This new, privately run jail will immediately begin taking in prisoners and will reach its intended capacity of 2,400 prisoners by May 2015.
The new prison is opening shortly after a major change in immigration policy declared in an executive order by Obama last month. Obama’s order focused on the promise of temporary relief from deportation for some immigrants, and an escalation of harshly repressive measures along the border. (See “Obama’s Immigration Moves—and the Need for Increased Resistance” for a fuller analysis of Obama’s measures towards immigrants and the intense conflicts in the ruling class.)
The Dilley prison camp is a cornerstone of the Obama policy towards repressing immigrants and controlling the border with massive militarization. It will provide the means for expediting the deportation of captured immigrants—what one official cynically called “one-stop shopping.” Immigrant families will be caged, run through a cursory and sham legal proceeding, and deported from the same facility in a few weeks
One key aim of the aggressive moves on immigration Obama began last month has been to promote divisions among immigrants—by promising some temporary reprieve from deportation for those who qualify under government criteria to “come out of the shadows,” and even harsher repression and criminalization for those who don’t qualify. Those in the second category include people who have been in the U.S. for years and people still trying to enter el norte because of the devastation the U.S. has wreaked upon their homelands.
Obama’s Immigration Moves—and the Need for Increased Resistance
Over 10 million immigrants—people this system calls "illegal" because of where they were born—live every day of their lives with this: the awareness that their least little encounter with any authority could very quickly lead to disaster in their lives. A sword of arrest, deportation, and the threat of being torn apart from family and friends and the lives they had been struggling to make in this country hangs over the heads of immigrants constantly—this has been the reality of the lives of millions of people.
---
Other battles have erupted that both exposed and opposed the harsh, heartless treatment inflicted upon immigrants. Cruel, barren and remote detention centers for immigrant children and immigrant families have been the focus of repeated protests and lawsuits. This past summer, people in the U.S. and around the world were shocked at the overwhelming cruelty of the military, police and legal measures taken by the U.S. government to detain and prepare for likely deportation tens of thousands of impoverished, desperate children from Central America.

The hopes of many people rose during the early years of Obama's administration—hopes that the threat of deportation would end, that the basic humanity of immigrants would be recognized, that a path to some form of legal status would be opened up to people who had been in this country for years. When he was first elected president, Obama told an audience composed largely of immigrants, ""I marched with you in the streets of Chicago to meet our immigration challenge. I fought with you in the Senate for comprehensive immigration reform. And I will make it a top priority in my first year as President".
2014
History started for some when Trump became president after they spent 8 years ignoring the many heinous things that Obama did during his tenure. I call that Selective Amnesia!

Are you
surprised?
We have concentration camps all over this country. Most go by the name of Prison. Or Boot Camp.
We already incarcerate the highest population in the world. A couple of million more will be just a blip on on the status of humanitarianism.
I say we let them all free all at once. Should be very entertaining with the shit that's coming anyways.
Thanks snoop.
Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.
The worst possible thing that could happen now...
would be that some fool decides to "Rescue" the children and attacks one of these places.
This is a Reichstag fire waiting to happen.
Yes, I'm getting paranoid, but I can see the wheels turning in some little evil shit's brain, and I know the plan has been proposed.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I don't blame you for thinking that
I've seen all kinds of suggestions on getting the kids out to blocking them from getting in to other actions that would just make things worse.
But I am getting a kick out of the anger that people are going through and I think it's just because Trump is the one doing it. This same thing happened during Bush's presidency, but it went away when Obama did the same things. I want so badly to say this on ToP in numerous diaries there, but I've seen others trying and they get shot down by the mob. It's so mind boggling how people can see what they want to see. I'm sure that I'm just as guilty of doing that, but at least I'm trying to see what the truth actually is. It's hard with so much propaganda being dumped on us.

Could Be Worse
If those immigrants were on the border of Israel, they'd be faced with targeted assassinations and the equally execrable "shoot to wound", which sometimes results in amputation of the affected limb.
Americans often forget that we treat border trespassers with kid gloves compared to some of our good friends and allies.
You are right
I'm just calling out the hypocrisy of people being upset now that Trump is the one doing these things when they have forgotten that Obama did them too.

For how long will america use 'kid gloves' ...
... when it seems it is relentlessly heading in a direction that is supported by a profitable prison system that keeps building new territory? Size and space is relevant, but equally an affliction in this case.
We should use kid gloves.

Way off topic but does anyone think he's being serious?
I'm thinking that this was snark, but check out the responses to this tweet. Now I understand why people think history started when Trump became president.

That photo...Fuck.
That looks like a goddamn dog kennel.
So much for condemning Trump voters on sight. Obviously, the neo-Nazi contingent is real (as evidenced by, if nothing else, the sudden hellish shift that occurred circa JAN 2017 in, of all things, the comments section of YouTube's leading rendition of Wagner's beatific "Tannhäuser Overture", though thank Odin it appears to have diluted since then), but some of them were voting for the "The Devil We Don't Know", which I've been saying for years is only the logical choice when that which you know is a devil. Yes, if you're offered a reroll on a 6-sided die you risk getting a '1', but if you've got a '2' as stands, you'd nearly always be stupid not to risk it.

is never wasted. I've been getting all kinds of money begging focused on ripping children from their parents...as though we have not done that for decades.

I have trouble reconciling
how the "greatest nation" in the world can continue to treat human beings all over the world and at home so inhumanely. There is something wrong about our collective psyche that has us rationalizing removing children from their parents and then placing them in dog kennels.

I find it far worse that we cannot find the strength
Don't want an atrocity... stop participating in it.
But across this country, it's NOT just the politicians that agree that this is fine. It's the pigs that happily rip kids from their parents. It's the Cookoo Corporate Cops who think that they can hide behind their organization and suddenly their sadism and cruelty is noble.
We have to remember, that people are PAID to do this. This is not the actions of a deranged mind. This is planned, there's a game plan, and there is a mission statement about these camps. People are still doing it, and are FINE with it because they cannot see any other way.
The Wheels must turn.

Important to remember to NOT let it happen again under a dem
Yah, when people open the door and peek into the Obama administration, the door gets slammed shut. After Hillary won the nomination, she was re-invented as a progressive. Obama was invented as a "liberal" while he ran stuff. The standard response is "whataboutism". Which I define as "if you point your moral finger, you should have moral standing to do it." You don't get to cheat on your spouse, and then condemn other people for cheating.
Here is a good twitter response by Max Blumenthal.

The point of remembering accurately is to not do it again. Don't let democrats do the same things when they take over. Or let it continue under gopers.
Exactly.
I had just this discussion this
weekend with friends who insist it is "worse" under Trump and Republicans are scum. I know they hate it when I interject but I reminded them Obama was the deporter in chief but NO ONE protested en masse then. But the one about the baby being ripped from it's mother, well, they are just sure that Obama would not have done THAT. Yeah, sure, whatever.
Thanks snoop, I think I will send at least one of the linked articles to them, what the hell.

Is this to compliment the detention center we have in Chicago?

This is one of those bits of citizen journalism that is really important.
For those who don't click through:
There are five things to notice in this. (1) I was held over 12 hours before the National Lawyers Guild could find me; essentially, I was in a black site. And it was another 18 hours before I was released. (2) The experience was structured to be punitive before any charges were made not to mention any due process. (3) The police violated my privacy at the hospital in order to emphasize how “dangerous” I was and to build up the idea of a general threat. (4) I never saw a warrant, even a “no-knock” warrant for the police break-in to the house. (5) There is property that the police have not returned to me; if it is “lost”, either the CPD is violating their own procedures or there are officers on the organized crime squad stealing items in raids.
This was in 2012, in America's third largest city, a "blue" city in a "blue" state.
This is what they do to people who were born here.
It's not surprising they put foreign children in cages.

Thanks for bringing his post to this discussion because it bookends what Pricknick said above. This country has no morals when it comes to lecturing others elsewhere. Or for even those who are saying that what Trump is doing is not American values. Bullcrap it isn't! What that person went through was mild compared to what some of the black residents of Chicago have gone through for years.
Look what Arapio was able to get away with in Arizona when he put hundreds of men in his tent city camps. Where was the outrage over that? Or any other outrage over what people went through during Obama's tenure? Starting with OWS' brutality during the protests and the breakup to what was allowed to happen to peaceful protesters during DAPL. As Mr. Webster stated, anyone who wanted to look at what happened during Obama's tenure gets the door shut in their face. And as WIProgressive stated, it's possibly not going to be long until more Americans are in detention centers themselves. This is a very real possibility because of the NDAA that Obama signed in 2012. Any one of us can be arrested, denied access to a lawyer and held indefinitely without charges or a trial. Obama's presidency was full of scandals, but people ignored them because of how he projected himself.
This never got as much attention as was warranted. Ray McGovern did try to sue the Obama administration after he signed it, but unfortunately I don't remember what the details were. Thanks again for posting this. I'm hoping that people get to read it. Thanks again ...
Then there's this little executive order he signed that also didn't get any attention.
Amen Sarah!

I’d never heard of this either. I felt compelled to check it out, at least briefly.
We didn’t hear about it, probably, because per Wikipedia:
Executive Order 13603
The entry says this EO has been around in some form since the 1950s.
I know nothing about the real implications of this, it may be far worse than Wikipedia lets on. But it wasn’t something new that obama came up with.
The whole concept of executive orders is something that needs more scrutiny. But I’m not an expert in federal government bureaucracies. And I don’t want to be...
