(Well, he did it): Trump orders strike on Syria in response to chemical attack

President Donald Trump announced that he ordered a strike on Syria in response to last weekend's alleged chemical weapons attack.

Addressing the nation Friday evening, Trump said the joint strike with France and United Kingdom is currently underway.

“A short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad," Trump said. "A combined operation with the armed forces of France and the United Kingdom is now underway."

US, UK & France starting 'precision strikes' in Syria – Trump

US President Donald Trump has approved military strikes in Syria in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack by the Assad government in Douma, near Damascus, last week.

"A short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad," Trump said in a televised address from the White House. He added that a combined military operation by the US, the UK and France is already underway in Syria.

Shortly after Trump's announcement, a statement from UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she had authorized British forces to conduct "coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability."

If the OPCW team has reached Eastern Ghouta, will the coalition shell it anyway and attempt to blame Syria/Russia? Looks like that was the deciding factor - destroy the evidence and blame Syria and Russia while they have the armada handy/incoming.

Edit to fix Syria typo and to add that they're determined to tack Iran onto the blame/attack on any pretext, as we know, and will almost certainly begin to do so again shortly - but China also knows of the schemes including them and is allied with Russia.

Too bad TPTB can't be taken out separately from the rest of us...

I just wanted to get the word out ASAP.

Mine was just the alerts I'd had, and copied here, starting with the news that the first team of the OPCW was in Syria, with a 2nd team to arrive shortly - and a little later, Trump decided to strike now, before testing could commence.

Let's just see if they decide to hit Eastern Ghouta - or have terrorists contaminate the area while everyone's busy being attacked by the lawless freakshow.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Saturday’s strikes on multiple targets were “harder” than those in 2017, but insisted no additional launches were planned. Washington also revealed that Moscow was warned in advance. Alrighty then.

"Right now this is a one time shot and I believe it sent a very strong message," Mattis said during a press briefing in the Pentagon, adding that there may be further attacks against the government of Bashar Assad “should he decide to use more chemical weapons in the future.”

This pisses me off because everyone knows that nothing happened that warranted the attack. You don't protect people by bombing them. This is just as big a false flag as the chemical weapons one was.

People are saying that the only reason Trump did this is to deflect attention from everything else that's happening. Who the Hell knows?

so horrific if it wasn't for US involvement in supplying loans, weapons (including the precursors to make CW's) and battlefield logistics to the Iraqis. In fact the war wouldn't have even occurred if it was wasn't for US, Israeli and Saudi meddling/manipulating both sides in order to degrade them both. This operation was classic Mossad modis operandi.

Arming Iraq: A Chronology of U.S. Involvement

What follows is an accurate chronology of United States involvement in the arming of Iraq during the Iraq-Iran war 1980-88. It is a powerful indictment of the president Bush administration attempt to sell war as a component of his war on terrorism. It reveals US ambitions in Iraq to be just another chapter in the attempt to regain a foothold in the Mideast following the fall of the Shah of Iran.
...
This chronology of the United States' sordid involvement in the arming of Iraq can be summarized in this way: The United States used methods both legal and illegal to help build Saddam's army into the most powerful army in the Mideast outside of Israel. The US supplied chemical and biological agents and technology to Iraq when it knew Iraq was using chemical weapons against the Iranians. The US supplied the materials and technology for these weapons of mass destruction to Iraq at a time when it was know that Saddam was using this technology to kill his Kurdish citizens. The United States supplied intelligence and battle planning information to Iraq when those battle plans included the use of cyanide, mustard gas and nerve agents. The United States blocked UN censure of Iraq's use of chemical weapons. The United States did not act alone in this effort. The Soviet Union was the largest weapons supplier, but England, France and Germany were also involved in the shipment of arms and technology.

Explosions heard in east Damascus after Trump announces Syria strikes – witnesses

A series of explosions have been seen in Damascus, Reuters reported, citing their own witnesses.

Images have started to emerge on social media, apparently showing Syrian air defense systems responding to incoming strikes.

A district of Damascus, which houses a scientific research facility, was targeted by strikes carried out by the US, France and Britain, with several large blasts and smoke rising from the eastern side of the capital, witnesses say.

According to reports, the US-led attacks hit a research facility located in the capital's Barzeh District. Syrian state media said that the air strikes targeted Damascus and surrounding areas.

The United States is using Tomahawk cruise missiles to attack multiple targets inside Syria, a US official told Reuters on Friday. The official did not disclose whether US warplanes were also involved in the strikes.

Last April, US President Donald Trump fired 59 Tomahawk missiles at Al Shayrat airfield in Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack in Idlib province.

Duma defense chief says Russia may respond with military force to US strike on Syria
Published time: 10 Apr, 2018 14:55
Edited time: 11 Apr, 2018 08:00

The head of the Duma defense committee and former commander of Russian airborne troops has said Moscow would take all measures, including military ones, in response to a possible US strike on government forces in Syria.
“The double standard policy has overstepped all possible boundaries. At this point, the [pro-Putin parliamentary majority] United Russia party must responsibly state that we are going to take all political and diplomatic measures, and also military measures if such need arises,” Vladimir Shamanov said on Tuesday before the State Duma plenary session. “Not a single unlawful action will be left without response,” he added.

On some level, Glenn sold out by condemning Assad purely on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations.

Did his patron, Pierre, tell him that he needed to toe the line on this issue, otherwise he'd be cut off from the Intercept and lose his lucrative pay check? Is this what happened?

I have never agreed with everything Glenn said and wrote. But even when I didn't, I chalked it up to sincere differences of opinion. I never thought that Glenn was lying or being a sell out during those times.

However, this latest move by him, has truly gotten my estimation of him to drop significantly. I have lost a lot of respect for Greenwald as a result of this.

It makes me wonder if all those people that were pointing to him as "controlled opposition," really weren't right about him all along.

However, this bothers human-normals, and Assad and Putin both fall into that category.

On the plus side, maybe those responsible can be charged with their war-crimes for a change, thereby discouraging others in future from bombing 'beautiful babies' to 'teach lessons' to legitimate governments to be overthrown by them to install puppet-dictators over their people more easily.

Normal people aren't ok with revenge-murders of random citizens.

New video reportedly taken from Syria shows air-defense interceptors taking flight after US President Donald Trump announced that the US, UK and France would strike Syria.

"God bless you, God bless you," a man can be heard saying, shortly after the interceptor seemed to collide with a missile, making a large boom sound.

"F*ck those American bastards," the man from the video says.

The Syrian Army reports shooting down 20 US, UK and French missiles. When asked about the missiles, the Pentagon during a briefing that it could not comment on the reports.

On Friday night, Trump said that strike operations were underway in response to an alleged attack in Douma, which Damascus and Moscow maintain was a false flag. Analysts are puzzled by the logic of Trump's decision to stand up against "Gas Animal Assad" by raining explosives on Syria and killing Syrians.

Damascus, Homs, a research facility in Barzeh, and an IRGC base in Qasioun Mountain have reportedly been targeted during the military operations.

US Violates All Int'l Norms, Russia Views This as Act of Aggression - Lawmaker

By conducting strikes on Syria, the US is violating all international norms, and Russia views this as an act of aggression, says Alexander Sherin, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, who compared US President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

"The US President Donald Trump is not just a criminal for the whole world, he is Adolf Hitler number two," Sherin told Russian media.

Earlier this day Trump announced he ordered military strikes on Syria.

"[Trump] is a criminal — but that's not enough. One can call him Adolf Hitler of today, because look — he even chose the time, just like when Hitler attacked the USSR," Sherin told reporters.

"This is the second 'Belgrade,' this is a turning point, the Russian Federation has received an act of aggression because, according to all international norms, this is a violation of all international rights. This is a declaration of war against a sovereign state, towards which a nuclear power is fulfilling its obligations of help and security," Sherin said.

"Everything we've done, all the effort put into this, they try to multiply it all by zero and simply put Russia on its knees," he added.

The strike on Syria is a ill-thought and provocational step by the US that can lead to unpredictable consequences, said his colleague, Yuri Shvytkin a deputy chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee.

"I think this is an ill-thought, half-baked, let's say, provocational, short-sighted, provocational step from US authorities' side that can lead to unpredictable consequences," he told reporters.

The actions of France, UK and the US in Syria do not benefit building constructive relations with Moscow, he added.

Shvytkin said that an emergency session of UN General Assembly is required in order to condemn the actions of the US and its allies.

The US seeks to conduct a strike in Syria in order to disavow the victory of Russia and its partners, said Alexei Chepa, deputy chairman of State Duma Committee on International Relations.

The actions by the US and its allies will not go without consequences. All responsibility lies upon Washington, London and Paris, Russian Ambassador to US Anatoly Antonov said, commenting on the strike.

"The worst apprehensions have come true. Our warnings have been left unheard. A pre-designed scenario is being implemented. Again, we are being threatened. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences," Antonov said on Friday. "All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris."

The Western nations have conducted a strike on a capital of a sovereign state that strives to survive in among terror aggression, Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Syrian capital was attacked at very moment when the country had a chance for a peaceful future, the ministry said.

The Ministry blamed the Western media, whose reports became the ground for Coalition's strike on Syria.

And about time that somebody in came out, identifying the US PTB as another Hitler; why else have the world's largest military continually expanding, military bases in countries all over the world while endlessly disrupting, attacking and invading everywhere on thin excuses and be intent upon ever more bases so as to be able to attack anyone, anywhere, any time? Not to mention their known plan of global totalitarian dominance.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The airstrikes launched by the United States, the United Kingdom and France on Syria came as terrorists in the war-torn country “badly” needed moral boost, but this “aggression” will only strengthen and deepen the partnership between Moscow and Damascus, Syria's Ambassador told Sputnik.

“This aggression comes at a time when the terrorist groups in Syria badly needed a morale boost. It will only serve to embolden them for a while. But it will not make a real difference. The armed terrorist groups are doomed, rejected by the local people in the areas they control, and will continue to face one major defeat after another. Syria will not be unnerved by this new aggression,” Syria's Ambassador to China and former ambassador to the United States, Imad Moustapha, told Sputnik.

The diplomat added that the strikes would only contribute to the further strengthening of the ties with Russia.

“This attack will only serve to strengthen and deepen Syria’s alliance and partnership with Russia. Russia took a vigorous position in exposing the mendacity of the staged chemical attack in Douma. Russia was firm in opposing any Western attack on Syria, and arguably it has succeeded in thwarting a large scale attack on Syria that could have caused unexpected consequences. We thank Russia for standing by us in this difficult time,” Moustapha said.

Damascus will call on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to take action against the “naked aggression” of the United States, the United Kingdom and France which carried out strikes against the country on Saturday, he added.

“Naturally, Syria will not allow these attacks to divert it from its purposeful determination to wipe out all terrorist pockets and groups regardless of the wrath and hysterics of their Western protectors. As for the Security Council, while Syria will urge the council to take action against this naked aggression, it has no delusions whatsoever about its role, capability and integrity. The UN Security Council has been hijacked by the Western powers and, unfortunately, will continue to be so for a very long time,” Moustapha said.

The diplomat stressed that the strikes were “merely a continuation in various forms of the same ongoing war against Syria.”

“The US, France and Britain come in the first tier of responsibility for the war of destruction aimed at Syria. Whether directly or by proxy, whether using vehicles loaded with explosives and put off in the streets of Syrian cities, bombarding Damascus and Aleppo with mortar shells, or attacking Syrian military positions with jet bombers and Tomahawk missiles – the motives are the same and the driving force is always the United States,” Moustapha said, noting that the Western coalition was “doing a dirty job on behalf of Israel.”

I keep thinking about how the "vacuum tube" and the "transistor invention" work and are so very synonymous with Israeli and US relationships. One small controlling voltage is controlling what the large voltage will or will not do at any given time.

@dfarrah
but as to demographics, the US Jewish population is only 2 to 3%, depending on who you decide to count.

It's still far, far more than all other Jews in the world outside of Israel -- Americans are somewhere between 45 and 50% of all the world's Jews, again depending on who you're including. There are probably more Jews in the US than in Israel, though the numbers are fairly close to each other. Any way you slice it, about 98% of all Jews live in either the US or Israel.

I have to say that I think the entire world, and the US significantly more than most nations, would be a lot better off if Europe's Jews had all moved to the US in 1946. Just for starters, RFK would have been president in '68, instead of Nixon. The price that the US has paid for propping up Israel for the last 70 years is almost incalculable. The peculiar political experiment that is Zionism has failed -- it has cost millions of lives and trillions of dollars.

I wonder, how much would we have to offer average Israelis to entice them to abandon the experiment and move to the US? 100K per person -- 400K for a family of 4? If every last Jewish Israeli accepted that offer, it would cost us about 600 billion, which seems like a lot but isn't really, considering the costs of the forever war. Hell, make it 200K per adult, 50K per child, so as to better motivate the young unmarrieds. Might boost the cost to 1 trillion. Who cares, if it puts an end to all this pointless slaughter?

But then, my solution to the problems of Central America was to simply buy all the land from the oligarchs (on condition that they leave the country and not "reinvest" by remotely buying up assets back home) and give it to the peasants. How much do you think El Salvador was worth, lock, stock and barrel?

Please keep publishing your ideas on this. I too have always thought the postwar refugee immigration should have been to our country, which in many cases it was of course. But I come from the position of seeing public knowledge of the U.S. industrial support for Hitler as a real threat against the merchants of death in this country. They were always, and especially just after the war, very vulnerable to being brought to justice. That is why I think they opposed refugees from the Holocaust from coming to this country and prevented photography and film of death camps from being published here. They were trying to fog over the truth of the horror and the massiveness of their crimes.

I believe first hand knowledge of the Holocaust and the war itself was a threat to the industrialists and that the ship carrying refugees was not allowed to arrive at the United States because of that knowledge.

The current headline on Huffpost: "The US's Useless Strikes". At TOP from what I can tell nobody condemned the attacks on any anti-war or moral justification. In fact the implication is that for
Trump to prove he is not Putin's puppet, Trump needs to kill more people includeing Russians while causing massive damage to the infrastructure of Syria.

So we will simply get a repeat cycle of Russia hysteria and accusations against Trump that he is soft on Putin. Putting pressure on Trump once again to use more force against Russia.

US aggression against Syria undermines UN, diplomatic solution – Russian envoy (WATCH LIVE)
Published time: 14 Apr, 2018 15:14
Edited time: 14 Apr, 2018 17:16

Russia has called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over the strikes that the US, UK, and France carried out in Syria on Saturday, calling the attack "blatant disregard of international law."

By acting without any mandate from the UN Security Council, the US and its allies violated the norms and principles of international law, as well as undermining the authority of the UNSC, Russian Envoy to the UN Vasily Nebenzia said, denouncing the strikes against Syria as “an aggression against a sovereign state.”

Nebenzia also called the attack "hooliganism." He said that the two research facilities that were targeted in the strike had been inspected by the OPCW, which didn't find any traces of chemical weapons.

Just like a year ago, the US used a staged a chemical attack against civilians as a pretext for its strikes, Nebenzia said, adding that Russian military experts found no trace of any chemical agent at the scene of the alleged attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma. “In a sign of cynical disdain,” a group of Western countries decided to take military action without waiting for a group of OPCW experts to present the results of an investigation into the incident, according to Nebenzia.

Russia did “everything possible” to convince the US and its allies to refrain from their military plans, which could destabilize, not only Syria, but the whole Middle East. However, Washington, London, and Paris “preferred to disregard appeals to common sense,” he added.

“The time for talk ended last night,” the UN envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said, referring to the coalition airstrikes in Syria. She then added that the US, UK, and France “acted” not out of “revenge… punishment [or] a symbolic show of force but… to deter the future use of chemical weapons” by holding the Syrian government responsible for what she called “atrocities against humanity.”

She also claimed that the actions of the coalition were “justified, legitimate and proportionate.”

The British representative to the UN, Karen Pierce, called the coalition operation a success, claiming that “none of the British, French or US aircraft or missiles involved in this operation were successfully engaged by the Syrian air defenses.” Pierce also called the UK actions a “humanitarian intervention” aimed at “alleviating overwhelming humanitarian suffering” of the Syrian people.

The time for talk died when the evidence uncovered by independent experts would have officially disproven their claims and, perhaps, proven their complicity in evidence potentially found within their funded terrorist's seized chemical weapons workshops for the intended, but thereby thwarted, chemical strike to be yet again blamed on Assad - the ex-London ophthalmologist - who has the nerve to try to improve the life conditions and dignity of his people, rather than further increase the wealth and power of what the US PTB feel to be The Right People at their cost.

Hard to do this when the US and allies bring in terrorists, artillery and sanctions to further harm the civilians there and elsewhere. And, as was publicly admitted by one Albright and shining example, a half-million babies and children dead - as well as with the inflicted suffering and deaths of however many more useless-to-them elderly, sick and poor adults - is more than 'worth it' for these psychopaths to gain more power and wealth by inflicting famine and lack of even basic medicines upon entire populations in their pursuit of totalitarian global domination.

So, the actual chemical attack was thwarted by Syrians, but the usual White Helmet faked 'video evidence' was to allow the plans to go forward anyway, as has been made obvious.

Generally, it's difficult to prove the absence of evidence, but here, the absence of anyone in Eastern Ghouta actually suffering nerve gas exposure and the absence of evidence in soil samples had already been established. It just needed to be independently verified by experts - who we can hope have not been influenced to be anything less than scientific, by those notorious for corrupting or intimidating organizations and individuals.

People abstained from voting for the Russian resolution (can't think of the correct term ATM) in protest over the knowledge that it would be vetoed.

It's probably good that it's recognized, or at least made more obvious than ever, that the UN has been made obsolete by the control of destructive self-interests, but only if replaced by something better than this pretense, where nobody starts off with the power to simply quash all voices speaking for justice.

Listening to this made me very tired, especially after listening to cursing during the outrageous propaganda claims made by the perpetrators skimming over the facts on Big Lie-flying wings and the demonstration of the fact that the perpetrators now feel that they can continue to do whatever they like, in ongoing flagrant contravention of international law and basic human morality.

They apparently fired off 110 missiles, 100 of which were intercepted; no idea how many people died, were injured, rendered homeless... haven't yet had the stomach to look. Guess this place is kinda my connection to humanity in a world where the expression of humanity is targeted for abuse and missile strikes...

As stated, I'd received a notification that the first team of the OPCW Chemical weapons investigation had arrived in Damascus, with a second team to arrive soon, which news, within I believe perhaps an hour, triggered the strikes in an obvious attempt to stop the investigation, whether by directly destroying the area so that accurate testing and the evidence of the terrorist chemical workshops could not be examined, or by allowing the evidently coordinated reentry of the terrorists just chased out to either contaminate/'adjust' evidence or occupy the site, so that it could not be tested and evidence of terrorist workshops (potentially implicating such as the US, British and French self-interests already established as being involved in such things?) be officially noted.

As has been pointed out, if there really was any belief of a chemical warfare production plant existing, this should have been pointed out to the OPCW, rather than their bombing it, to release toxic chemicals killing any civilians not directly hit by missiles, flying debris, the collapse of buildings...

So in that sense, the targeting of a scientific research site at least apparently failed to kill any civilians, unless there were any security guards, cleaners or late workers within. Destroyed a lot of research work, I expect, and put a lot of people out of work, apart from the damage, costs, waste... the trademark of the PTB...

However, although the US PTB routinely target civilians and often label them 'terrorists' to pad 'kill lists', the evident intention here was to prevent the investigation as well as to weaken the country and harm the civilians so that yet another country could be invaded, permanently occupied by the US PTB, setting up military bases everywhere in order to be able to attack anyone, anywhere, in the now-unmistakable process of global take-over - under the pretext of fighting what are often known to be their own pet terrorists.

But as far as the last information I've heard indicates, this sick and sickening exhibition of lawless bullying and murderous destruction hasn't worked to prevent the investigation, however revealing of the intent and pathology of its perpetrators it's otherwise been.

Chemical weapons investigation team arrives in Damascus – OPCW
Published time: 14 Apr, 2018 12:42
Edited time: 14 Apr, 2018 14:54

A fact-finding mission by the UN’s chemical weapons watchdog has arrived in Damascus. The agency said earlier its work would continue despite airstrikes carried out on the country hours earlier by the US, UK, and France.

OPCW

@OPCW

BREAKING: #OPCW Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) team has arrived in Damascus, #Syria to commence its work.
9:30 AM - Apr 14, 2018

Inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are in the country to investigate the circumstances surrounding reports of a gas attack in the Syrian city of Douma, where at least 70 people are reported to have died from chemical exposure. Syria and Russia called for an OPCW inquiry into the claims.

The agency, set up to ensure the destruction of chemical armaments, is due to assess the scene and take samples from alleged attack victims to determine the cause and potentially uncover the perpetrators.

The OPCW, whose members include Syria, Russia, the UK, France, and Russia, issued a statement on Saturday saying the investigation into the alleged use of illegal chemical weapons will continue.

The statement comes after a night of bombing, which saw US, French, and British forces launch missiles at sites including a military facility outside Homs and a suspected research center in the capital, Damascus. Both Russia and Syria have condemned the airstrikes as a breach of international law, and insist that Assad forces did not deploy chemical weapons. ...

This, following, was prior to the attack - and evidently sparked fears of exposure in those complicit in the planning of the thwarted chemical attack by terrorists, and who arranged for/used a propaganda release in order to proceed with plans of an attack involving 110 missiles launched into and around populated and rural areas, although apparently 100 of them were intercepted, and failed to flatten the city and to kill, injure and dispossess the numbers of citizens there which were evidently intended.

‘They can go anywhere they want in Douma’: OPCW team arrives in Syria to investigate alleged attack
Published time: 12 Apr, 2018 18:33
Edited time: 13 Apr, 2018 11:26

The first four chemical weapons experts from the OPCW have arrived in Syria on a fact-finding mission (FFM) into the April 7 Douma incident, while Western leaders continue to blame the government for the alleged attack.

OPCW

@OPCW

In response to media queries, the Spokesperson for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirms that the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) team is on its way to Syria and will start its work as of Saturday 14 April 2018.
10:53 AM - Apr 12, 2018

"We will facilitate the arrival of the team to anywhere they want, in Douma, to check whether or not there was use of chemical substances," said Bashar Jaafari, Syria’s envoy to the UN in New York, adding that a second team is due to arrive on Friday.

The Damascus suburb of Douma was recaptured by the government this week, so experts from the UN-backed Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are expected to have easier access than on previous occasions when the alleged attacks happened in areas of ongoing fighting or those controlled by radical Islamists.

Syria and Russia both requested an FFM team to be dispatched after opposition groups claimed that the Syrian army executed a chemical weapons attack there, alleging there were scores of deaths and hundreds of casualties.

Both countries have claimed that the incident was “staged” with the purpose of galvanizing Western rebel backers after the US earlier announced that it was planning to pull out of Syria, and they say that there may not have been any chemical use at all. ...

But should the terrorists 'just happen' to retake the area while the country is under attack by their paymasters, it wouldn't be safe for any such investigation to be conducted, would it?

Previous investigations apparently could not be carried out on the ground in other areas precisely because of this hazard.

Gee, so, who 'ya gonna believe - the people who insisted upon independent experts to verify their findings, or the lying sponsors of terrorism who seek to avoid any such thing? Decisions, decisions...

Every time I believe my disgust and outrage levels of capacity have been exceeded, there's always more... psychopaths must be eliminated from all governmental and policy areas; this could be possible and would vastly increase our chances of survival.

And we of the countries with currently PTB-controlled governments do not want any other country taking our right of self-government, either, as may occur if we fail to work out pacific methods of political change ourselves; we want democracy back to serve our own public and country's interests, which means that we must ourselves form the electoral choices from which we choose, within an electoral system designed to provide us with the government most desired by the population majority - not with that desired by parasites and predators seeking that last drop of life-blood they resent us having.

Progs only. For all of humanity, in both senses of the term.

Syria Strikes Remind Serbian President of NATO's Bombing of Yugoslavia

The president said that the US, French and British attack on Syria on April 14 was a reminder that a policy of military neutrality was the only correct course for Belgrade to take.

"For all of us who are over 18 or 19 years old, this campaign is a painful reminder of the period we went through," Aleksandar Vucic said, speaking to Serbian television on Saturday.

The US led-tripartite attack made several things very clear, Vucic said. "The policy of military neutrality is the only policy which we can conduct, because being on the side of the strong does not necessarily mean that you are on the side of morality and truth," he noted.

According to Vucic, the situation in the world today now resembles the one which the world faced ahead of the First World War. "There is a struggle for resources, for oil, copper, aluminum – a clash of interests. This atmosphere reminds me of the one which existed ahead of the First World War; although I will not say that something like this can happen, since the forces and military might of countries today are frightfully immense."

Serbia's goal must now be to quietly work to improve its economy, but also to strengthen its military "to be able of defend ourselves," the president said.

Yugoslavia was subjected to a 78-day NATO bombing campaign between March 23 and June 10, 1999. The bombing led to upwards of 5,700 civilian deaths, and contaminated areas of the country with radiation from NATO's depleted uranium (DU) rounds.

The US, France and the UK launched 103 air and warship-launched cruise missiles into Syria on Saturday morning, aiming at targets in Damascus and Homs province. According to the Russian military, Syrian air defenses intercepted 69% of the missiles.
