Who didn't see this coming?

From Business Insider:

Facebook will now require Pages with large followers as well as political ads to be authorized

The company will now require Pages with large numbers of followers to be authorized and will require the same of political ads on its site and Instagram. The new requirements are aimed at increasing transparency and accountability and preventing election interference, Rob Goldman, Facebook's vice president of ads, and Alex Himel, its vice president of local and Pages, said in a blog post on the company's site.

...

"These steps by themselves won't stop all people trying to game the system," Zuckerberg wrote. "But they will make it a lot harder for anyone to do what the Russians did during the 2016 election and use fake accounts and pages to run ads."

FFS.

I'm too pissed/tired/demoralized to offer any further commentary. Just wanted to post this in case others hadn't yet seen it.

Anyone who is still peddling the "Russia, Russia, Russia" narrative should be prohibited from becoming self appointed arbiters of what is fake and what is real.

Period.

@ovals49 I'm appalled by how many of them are cheering this development. They're actually arguing that censorship is necessary and good.

I swear, we went to sleep and woke up in 1936.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Dupes.

DIPSHITS is more like it!

More like: "Anyone who is still peddling the "Russia, Russia, Russia" narrative should be prohibited from all publication of any kind. Period."

There's no right to propagate stupidity or lies, and no Constitution or Law has the power to establish one!

we must have the fox guarding the hen house authorize the chickens. One can only hope FB, Youtube, Google and Twitter all die.

FB has been secretly deleting Zuckerberg's emails on Messenger "in order to protect his privacy".

It's an incredibly comprehensive piecing-together of the insane dystopia of this whole thing in so many directions.

Must-read (don't have the time or I'd dedicate an essay just to it):

Can We Be Saved From Facebook?
The social media giant has swallowed up the free press, become an unstoppable private spying operation and undermined democracy. Is it too late to stop it?

As usual Snowden nailed it too:

Taibbi goes into that and so much more. The guy's smoking hot lately.

@Mark from Queens Taibbi, IMHO, has always been smoking hot. I'm shocked, in a way, that he's still allowed to speak in the mainstream.

Thanks, MFQ, for the tip on his latest. I'm off to read it now.

@Mark from Queens
Taibbi pulls no punches and reveal a fully developed instrument of information extraction and manipulation that leaves anything Orwell might have imagined far behind. I do not see how this country, or the world, will ever regain the possibility of an informed electorate chosing its leaders democratically. The level of personal data collection and manipulation is already chilling in the extreme.

How can a public that has lost its mind and its independence in this way ever hope to find it again?

@Mark from Queens came lots of info:

Additionally, they posited, "The main driver of misinformation diffusion is the polarization of users on specific narratives rather than the lack of fact-checked certifications." Translation: Lazy thinking and sheltered mental environs lead to more misinformation than fake news does.

Ain't that the truth? Hence the reason to listen to all sides of an argument, even (gasp) the NYT.
