In Your Eyes

People want to be good. And life wants to be happy.

In Portsmouth was born a kitten blind and with an inoperable spinal condition that rendered his rear legs useless.

But he was adopted from goodhappy.pngthe animal-shelter by a woman, and then students at a local school built him a wheelchair.

Because people want to be good.

And the kitten, he doesn’t know that he’s hurt and sad and poor: he likes to run on the floors, listen to music, bat things around with his front paws, just like all the other kittens.

Because life wants to be happy.

Someday all of the humans will devote all of the resources to all of the creatures. Including each other.

Because people want to be good. And life wants to be happy.

That I may not live to see it, that doesn’t mean it’s not Real.

Because I have been to the mountaintop. And I have looked over.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
It took love to make them all.

Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.

People love these sort of defects or abnormalities in animals, even breed for them in some cases, but the same traits in people are met with hate and disdain.

@Daenerys
Maria Bertilla Boscardin was born in 1888 into a Veneto peasant family where father drank and beat. She was considered "slow," and addressed as "goose." She worked peeling potatoes in a charity hospital. Until it was seen that she had a gift, for calming children with diphtheria, many of whom had undergone tracheotomies. Untrained; a healer. She worked with children considered too disturbed to be helped. But they weren't. When, in WWI, the humans debuted their new way of killing each other—with airplanes—she moved through the bombings, succoring casualties, those too frightened to move. She cared for soldiers with tuberculosis, with people stricken by Spanish flu. As she herself slowed with cancer. She died young. She is a lesson that anyone, anyone at all—even those mocked as slow geese—can do good work, can help people, and other living things. Today, she is a saint. As, always, she was. As, always, are you, too.

@hecate unfortunately. I think of the story of Laura Bridgeman and Asa Tenny, and later Helen Keller and the way we can harness understanding and acceptance, and then go on to create the institutional hell that caused so much suffering for so many. Many that were institutionalized solely because their presence in society was "inconvenient".

This is the cruelty of which Daenerys spoke. And you are right: the humans who wielded this cruelty at Maria Bertilla Boscardin were wrong.

It's funny... People love these sort of defects or abnormalities in animals, even breed for them in some cases,

Breeding animals for dysfunctional abnormalities is cruelty.

Example: The faces of Persian cats, which often interfere with their ability to breathe.

but the same traits in people are met with hate and disdain.

More cruelty on the part of certain humans.....

@thanatokephaloides But they don't see it that way. They just see them as an accessory.
I feel sorry for the squish-faced animals. Pugs, chihuahuas and bulldogs are arguments for human extinction, I say!

Is it okay to say that I grew up on that mountaintop - or at least near the summit?

I've seen, lived, and been formed by a world that most people refuse to believe ever happened. That world is real - it's simply in its embryonic stages, and progress works like a mold culture in a petri dish rather than, as a lot of people seem to think, a file download with a percentage bar. What frightens me so much right now is that it's being strangled in its cradle, not just by people who willfully wish to prevent it, but now with the help of people who claim to be fighting for it.

Always FIGHTING. Never WINNING.

People have become unable to see, or even accept the existence of, multiple worlds - how can you expect to create a new world if you're trapped in the old one?

It's like the mated pair of geese who used to live down the dirt road I live on: They had a gosling, and they were super-protective of it, and...well, they were stupid. They were unable to distinguish threat from non-threat, and once nearly crushed their own gosling underfoot in their stampede to ward off a stranger.

Throughout, as he waded in poverty, degradation, simplicity, hardship, he could alwasys find divinity in human beings. Made me appreciate and be able to identify more easily the genius, brilliance, compassion and empathy right there in my intimates. Rather than looking to mythical heroes, institutions and inflated historical figures for inspiration.

Or, as George Carlin said in an interview (which you can see in SOE’s OT yesterday), in which he explained why he doesn’t like groups of people but he does like individuals, “if you look into a person’s eyes you can see the whole universe.”

@mimi

and may be because we don't see a person in the eye online we don't see the whole universe despite being on this whole world wide thing.

You still can. It just takes more effort; the effort to always remember the human being on the other side of the communication.

And that effort is worthwhile regardless......

with a hopeful ending. Wish the broadcast news could focus more on the positive aspects of life, like this. Think it may improve people's outlook. Why not?
