I just visited and bookmarked the site. I am definitely adopting the idea that all three books of Abrahamic scripture are divinely inspired. Not so sure about the Book of Mormon, but I'm not gonna trip on it.

I think it's more likely that LSD and Beatles music were divinely inspired than these books. Further, my response to each of those are personal and not necessarily how anyone else would react. I believe certain people, throughout history (and pre-history), have expressed how the universe works and how we should interact and that people can take that and make it work for themselves, without groupthink.

There's so much muck in all of the books that believing in *them* is, in my opinion, a choice I reject. There's good stuff, too, but I define "good" as "agreeing with what I already think".

I respectfully submit that the same could be said about the meme itself! Smile

I get a kick out of the meme's author(s) using one of a very small set of points all those books agree on -- the Golden Rule, which the Elder Rabbi Hillel stated contained everything else in the books as commentary thereon -- to criticize the single worst misbehavior of the Abrahamics.

(Hence the minimalist Essay.)

But do you believe That Queen Elizabeth II is head of a church?

That,to my mind, is key to life itself.

The two best Heads that the Church of England ever had in that seat, in my humble opinion, were both women: Victoria, for defending and maintaining Catholic Emancipation and eventually full religious freedom throughout the Empire; and Elizabeth II, for making sure British law and custom maintained that freedom after World War II.

I also note with some satisfaction that these two Monarchs have held the Throne longer than any others, with Her current Majesty having held it the longest since September 9, 2015.

This reminds me of something that happened a couple of years ago.

My wife and I were in England and we decided to visit Windsor Castle. We got on line to enter, and a bus load of tourists led by a British tour guide got on line right behind us. The tour guide was expressing pride in his country’s freedom of religion when a tourist said, “Well don’t you have a church led by the queen?”

The tour guide said, “We do. However, we no longer behead people for going to a different church.”

God/Allah/Jehovah is beyond complete understanding by man. Therefore, every religion is an incomplete understanding of God/Allah/Jehovah.

No human being can claim to be incapable of error and without flaw.

Unless a particular person claims that they have a complete and total understanding of the Divine, they must admit that human error is possible.

Passages/scripture are susceptible to error because the words of the prophet/messenger are misunderstood by the listener.

Every single person has a personal connection to the Divine based on their informed conscience. Every moral/ethical person conducts themselves according to the dictates of their conscience.

I'm just thinking out loud here.

@Meteor Man You said in part:

Passages/scripture are susceptible to error because the words of the prophet/messenger are misunderstood by the listener.

And that reminded me of a recent bit of reading. Our English King Jimmy is of course translated and modified from Greek and other prior sources. So?
My recent "well hell, why didn't anyone tell me that earlier?" was a discussion of the King James "Repent!" as a baad translation of "Metanoia". The original according to what I read had more to do with remaking yourself for the future. To be an upstanding part of the community etc. Feeling shame and guilt about past "sins" and thus the need to repent? Not so much.

Changing the greater idea of "metanoia" solely to a small subset definition of repent probably works better for a patriarchal church though, so there you go.

and/or claims about the nature of the world or events. One has a right to hold "faith" but not a right to have the ideas and claims withheld from being criticized, scrutinized and/or rejected (especially for lack of evidence). All of the writings that make up the foundations of all religions should be viewed with a sense of skepticism and a demand for evidence.

So if one does not want their 'faith' challenged, they should keep it to themselves. I don't 'respect' anyone's faith any more than I respect their political opinions.

You'd get a kick out of the fifth Tenet of The Satanic Temple (TST):

Beliefs should conform to our best scientific understanding of the world. We should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit our beliefs.

The link is to the list of all seven Tenets of TST.

I have but one objection to these Tenets: For an organization who maintains that it worships the Abrahamic spirit of evil, The Satanic Temple has a habit of being the good guys in so many of the battles they fight! (??)

@thanatokephaloides I just cheer them on when they insist on having equal rights to display their stuff on government property. That alone has shut down a lot of the religious efforts to use government to promote Christianity.

However, my sentiments are not based on their tenets (this is the first time I've viewed them). A lot of what I expressed was expressed by people like Thomas Jefferson a long time ago.... although he tended to keep these views limited to private letters.

I've stopped keeping my views private when it comes to religion. These days if someone asks me if I know Jesus, rather than making some benign deflecting comment, I get right to it. I tell them that I know Jesus well, having studied him for years, and I found him and his father too immoral for my tastes. Actually I've only done that once, and the reaction was stunned silence. I like the silence part of that.

I'm still more impressed with TST's application of the first four of the Tenets (at least, the first four as their website lists them):

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.
The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo your own.

Most especially the one about "One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone". This has inspired TST to oppose brutal corporal punishments in schools (in Texas, no less!) as well as to defend women's reproductive rights. I find these far more substantial and important than the old battles against a monument to the Ten Commandments in the local park. (Not to denigrate the importance of the latter, but I do recommend checking out the actions I described here and here.)

Maybe they lie? Whether about worshiping evil or about believing in science, etc. Or, since they seem to believe in what fundies don't, like reality, maybe they're more like Pastafarians? Know that the deity they profess to worship is fictional, but have fun in spoofing what they regard as ridiculous superstition too-often also used by the unscrupulous for self-interested purposes in controlling/sucking money out of others?

thanatokephaloides's picture

@Ellen North

If you worship the 'Father of Lies', can you be truthful?

Is Satan the "Father of Lies" ??

Most Satanists will tell you that Satan, as the Serpent, got bolloxed up with God in the Adam and Eve Incident (Genesis 3) by telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth:

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

-- Jewish Scriptures, Genesis 3:3 - 5

As Meteor Blades said, "Show me what you do, and I will tell you what you believe." The Satanic Temple (TST) acts against brutal corporal punishments in schools and against infringements on the rights of women to determine when they will and will not be pregnant. (I remind all my readers that the attachment of anti-abortion to Christianity began with Pope Paul VI's Humanae Vitae in 1968 -- it has NO explicit support in Scripture!)

I admit, however, that TST does create somewhat of a paradox doing what they do. Doing good in the name of Satan does indeed boggle the mind!
