Imagine my shock when I read that my aunt had a massive stroke and her outlook didn't look good. My cousin posted that they weren't going to do any life saving procedures for her because her condition was so critical.
Fortunately I continued reading and found that a drug was able to dissolve the clot and that she was going to be okay.
No one bothered to call me the next day either to let me know about this and when I told my uncle that I rarely read it and I only read it that night because I was bored and said this was a horrible way for me to find out about this, he said that I should read it every day and then walked away.
I live 5 minutes from their house and I have been visiting as often as I could since my mom's death and because I am so close to my aunt. But I'm supposed to read this site every day in order to keep up with what's happening with my family!
I looked at it again today and there's an article about macular degeneration....
Grrr! This is the field I used to work in and just before I had to stop working, the doctors I worked with were starting a new trial study for a possible ptreatment for the condition of the disease that had been untreatable and I wanted to see how this trial went and if this treatment had worked.
As this graphic shows, Facebook seems to think it owns your life just because you joined it. They had somehow found out about my online search that I did off its website. I have an anti tracking on my iPad so how were they able to see my search?
I have found information on other issues that my family has sent me through the site instead of sending me an email, text or bothering to place a f*cking phone call!
I'm thinking of placing a message there and telling people that if they have something to say to me, find a different way then Facebook because I'm logging off it.
I am so angry what people have allowed this site to do to families across the world. We've read about family members being so involved with Facebook that marriages have broken up, work places TELL people to give them their login information and if someone posts something that bosses don't like, they can be fired for it.
I don't know why our government spent so much of our money on surveilling us since we gave Facebook the opportunity to do it for them.
As to what my family had been posting, it was things about Trump's collusion with Russia, the stupid things he said and done, videos of funny pets and some of the most ludicrous things I've ever seen.

She is very fortunate that she lives in an age when there are now treatments for certain types of strokes. She had one that is call non-hemorrhagic which means it was due to a blood clot not a brain bleed. TPA is a drug that can dissolve the clot if it is given in a very small amount of time.
My uncle recognized what was happening and EMS was able to get her to the hospital on time to administer the drug.
My uncle and cousin had to make the incredibly hard decision not to interbate (breathing tube) her or do any life saving procedures besides giving the TPA.
When I visited her Wednesday afternoon she had no lasting effects from the stroke except for some mild weakness on her left side. Other than that, she seemed normal.
As mimi mentioned, FB is like a drug and the users are addicts. I definitely can say that my uncle is acting like one. He was updating his page with those inane issues while sitting with her and while I was visiting instead of having a conversation with us.
Another soul lost to this shit hole that has devoured so many.

"I don't know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying, because [of] the unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people and ... it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other ... It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains."
"The thought process that went into building these applications, Facebook being the first of them, ... was all about: 'How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?'"
"And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you ... more likes and comments."
"It's a social-validation feedback loop (me: and any comment that doesn't validate your comment, but puts it down is as dangerous as the ones that validates your comment positively)... exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology."
"The inventors, creators — it's me, it's Mark [Zuckerberg], it's Kevin Systrom on Instagram, it's all of these people — understood this consciously. And we did it anyway."
They exploited the human emotional nature for their profits consciously. That's why they deserve to be roasted in hell. I was still so kind to think that "they must have not known what they were doing" and "didn't consider unintended consequences". How naive to be that generous in my thinking about them.

Only cos it's the ONLY way some people I care about communicate. I do not use them, and my family/friends know it. It's really bad on Twitter--you can see how dumbed down and stupid too many people are. Rec'd!!
@orlbucfan
But you know, a few years ago, I decided that I wasn't letting them force me into using social media that I didn't want to. I more or less GBCW'ed and left a forwarding address for those who *I* wanted to talk to still. Admittedly, it's not easy and I get a lot of resentment. I recently had a big blow up with some in my family when my mother was critically ill and information went to Facebook walls before I heard it (not to mention the need to broadcast family medical details to the world at large.) Perhaps I am the curmudgeon, but I just don't feel I'm in the wrong here. I know the rumor is FB can be a force of good, but it seems all I ever hear is conflict and drama ending relationships that start with something someone posted on FB. I don't need that really.

I am sorry to hear that you also had to find out about your mother's health on FB. I understand the shock you went through. This is wrong on so many levels and I don't understand why or how families can't see this.
If they want to let their friends and other family members who live out of state know, that is one thing, but to not notify close family members is another.
If I had stopped reading after I read the first post, I would never had known that her treatment worked. But still...........!!!!

As for people who think one should have to use that mess? I just don't get that. When my mother died my sister put that out on FB pretty much right away, and then we realized we'd forgotten to call my stepmom, who would see it there. We immediately called her to let her know. I mean, common courtesy? But hey, I get that courtesy is now a luxury good, and apparently we're not supposed to use that anymore. If it can't be monetized, we're simply not supposed to do it.

world is on FB?
Last time I was on FB was 2009 and I haven't missed
Farmville at all. s/

We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
From Axios :
They exploited the human emotional nature for their profits consciously. That's why they deserve to be roasted in hell. I was still so kind to think that "they must have not known what they were doing" and "didn't consider unintended consequences". How naive to be that generous in my thinking about them.

I have no use for facebook
or any other social media.
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Good one....ROFLMAO

I am registered on both FB and Twitter.
Only cos it's the ONLY way some people I care about communicate. I do not use them, and my family/friends know it. It's really bad on Twitter--you can see how dumbed down and stupid too many people are. Rec'd!!

This!
Families, circles of friends in real life, churches, all have been wiped out because of contact with Facebook!

No you are not in the wrong JC
I am sorry to hear that you also had to find out about your mother's health on FB. I understand the shock you went through. This is wrong on so many levels and I don't understand why or how families can't see this.
If they want to let their friends and other family members who live out of state know, that is one thing, but to not notify close family members is another.
If I had stopped reading after I read the first post, I would never had known that her treatment worked. But still...........!!!!
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.

It's less the fault
of FB than the barely internet-literate morons that use the site. FB is going to be FB and like every corporate online site. I use the site lightly, have two or three accounts on there and "visit" 4 or 5 times a week for 10-15 mins. /visit. So, an hour /week. I tell people I know in RL on there not to use their real name (or any other real info). "Oh, Wink, you're just your paranoid self... " yeah, that's it.

Never had an account, will not ever get one.
My niece and nephew are on it, and since I have not heard at all from my niece who apparently can't even text now, I am tempted to get on and look. But NO. They both know I will not use FB.
