Bernie Sanders beats Hillary Clinton in stunning Michigan primary upset

Vermont senator had trailed in polls by more than 20 points but opposition to free trade and growing African American support won votes in rust-belt state

danny-glover

“Sanders’s win in Michigan was one of the greatest upsets in modern political history.”

Bernie Sanders made folks like me eat a stack of humble pie on Tuesday night. He won the Michigan primary over Hillary Clinton, 50 percent to 48 percent, when not a single poll taken over the last month had Clinton leading by less than 5 percentage points. In fact, many had her lead at 20 percentage points or higher. Sanders’s win in Michigan was one of the greatest upsets in modern political history.

Heh.

From my recent diary, A nation of hope and opportunity for all:

Now a lot of people like to sound smart. They often speak of facts and figures, polls and statistics. They possess all the numbers. They're 538 smart, 'Bernie's stuck at 30%' smart. They are not really smart.

Don't listen to stupid people or people who have a vested interest in manipulating you. Listen to the smart people who are telling you the truth. We are in big trouble and we better do something big about it.

Doing the same stupid shit one more time, settling for fake change one more time, will seal our fate. Don't be stupid and don't be manipulated by people with bad intent.

And don't let anybody tell you that there is not a revolution under way. Anyone who honestly doesn't realize it is a fucking moron. The rest are liars. The oligarchy is real. The revolution is real. Only counter-revolutionaries or agents of the oligarchy have any interest in convincing you otherwise.

A stunning victory is a stunning victory.

What The Stunning Bernie Sanders Win In Michigan Means

To everyone who could not, for whatever reasons, find their way to support the revolution, I'm sorry for your loss. I also hope you're able to explain to your grandchildren why you weren't part of the great people's revolution of 2016. I suppose you could just lie and say you were on board.

Go Bernie!

the 'political revolution' is resonating with we the people. Love always wins out over fear and hate. Makes me proud that after being bait and switched people are once again standing up to the 'inevitable' anti-democratic, mean spirited, that think they own and run the D party the country, the world and the universe. Thanks OPOL for keeping the spirit of brotherhood all that good stuff alive and growing.

Notice how everybody in Democratic Party seems to have always been for Civil and Gay rights...

I fear this will be our future. Truth obscured by a vast smokescreen of 24/7 revisions.

So, hell with that, and celebrate the victory of truth today! A battle won, and a war to win!

It appears that there is quite a bit of willful ignorance going on about Bernie Sanders.

I guess the pundits and the establishment are not feeling so smug about their predictions this morning. Probably feels a bit like a bad hangover.

Truth always wins. Bernie is a truth-teller! I’m going with truth every damn time!

It’s the people’s turn. They are stating, enough is enough! In no uncertain terms!

The revolution is ON!

Keep ‘em coming, OPOL. The fight is just getting started. We are in it to win it!

Love trumps hate!

America needs President Bernie Sanders, now!

Your diaries summarize exactly why I will not give up and why Bernie should see this through the last state voting. It is all about his message and why we, the people, should never settle for less like every other politician tells us. Thank you for shining a bright light on Bernie and his message.

Of course over time I find myself agreeing with a great deal of what she says. Smile

Would add that I believe we need to do what we can to be the megaphone for the #NotMeUS meme.

Many of us who participated in OWS believed that the established political process in the US as it currently works is a dead end, that change must come from outside the system.

After teaching HS teacher in the public schools for many years, just have to think that there are many young Bernie supporters who do not really understand what this means, nor grasp the level of dedication Bernie believes is necessary to even have a chance at revolution in thinking needed to change the status quo.

Without this, there is no way we can expect that our "HOPE" and "Change To Believe In" of Obama's campaign, or "A Future to Believe In" of Sander's campaign, will ever materialize.

Like many who voted for the promise they saw in Obama in 2008 (like myself), there are now hundreds of thousands who will soon sit back and feel lied to by Bernie when in reality he has said this from the get go.

last evening, I've been concerned that the Dem Party Machine would step in to stop Bernie. I think that concern was overblown. I hope so.

So, for now, much reason to celebrate.

A hearty congratulations on a stunning victory to Bernie and the entire C99P Community!

Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.

The early campaign for Hillary (in 2015) was to establish her in the long term memory of voters as the inevitable candidate.

The debate schedule favored her with specific voters.

The primaries, thus far have allowed the Democratic Establishment to use the Southern Strategy to set up the early push that she is inevitable, and thus no other votes will matter. Sounds harsh, but those states vote for conservatively and Hillary Clinton is more like a Republican than many want to admit.

She has the right bells and whistles for certain key things people want to keep (Supreme court nominations for example), but given how horrible the Republicans are, she doesn't have to be much better in order order to say 'look at how great I am in comparison. The bar has been set very low for Democrats to 'be better than that other party.

With Hillary Clinton, it's more along the lines of: See what those Republicans are going to do to you? It's so much better with me. I won't make you drink dirty water that will kill you, but I'm not gonna make things any better either. Now, do you wanna drink dirty water and die or do you wanna vote for me?"

The proclamation for the Ideas of March -over there- was another in a series of steps that favor and have favored Hillary Clinton. Lets slant the thoughts of people who have yet to vote that this is already over so that turnout is lowered. Yes, whether we like it or not, these kinds of tactics are voter suppression techniques. Let's dampen the spirit of those people so fewer of them go vote.

We'll see what happens next, as I do not waste my time on polls and predictions. I'll deal with reality as it comes. I'd like to think that this (recent upset win by Sanders) is a sign things will change moving ahead. We'll see. Even if it is, we must realize that there is still going to be a huge amount of obstruction politically. I prefer nothing getting done under Bernie, than anything getting done under Clinton given she'll 'work with Republicans' to get things done, even if those things ultimately hurt the American people.

That's why this revolution matters. I watched his talk in Miami, and you can just see the genuine empathy and desire for justice pouring out of him. He cares, he cares about all of us. I am so inspired that finally someone who cares is running in an election.

Thanks so much OPOL for posting here.

A small view from MI:
In my MI county (Jackson), voter turnout was 30%. In 2008, it was 17.5%. The final results were 55.0% Sanders, 43% Clinton. HRC received most of her votes within the city limits of Jackson and the more "affluent" townships in the area. There is a community college here. It is generally a rather depressed area with lots of drug trade and shootings. On a related note, I find it interesting that Kalamazoo (a couple counties over from me) with its recent Uber driver shooter went overwhelmingly for Sanders despite HRC hammering on him about guns.

The Republican vote was Trump 39%, Cruz 25% and Kasich 21%. By the way, the city of Jackson has the dubious distinction of being the birth place of the Republican Party.

PS: I have not yet figured out how to find responses to my comments, so if I do not get back to anyone here or elsewhere, that is why.

Reddit is way more complicated to me, so it will be a while before I post any dairies there. 99 seems to be a little easier, at least for you. We have been Bernin up Northern NJ with meetings and phone banks. The seeds are rising as the Spring of the Revolution dawns. Yesterday I was having a blast breaking in phone neophytes, one a sweet lady of 74 another a young 30 something mother of three and they were hesitant at first but by the end of the session they were all aboard the Momentum Train. Best time I've had in a long while.
