Democratic power lobbyist Tony Podesta, founder of the Podesta Group, is stepping down from the firm that bears his name after coming under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Podesta announced his decision during a firm-wide meeting Monday morning and is alerting clients of his impending departure.

Fritts also addressed the gathering, telling staff that she is “thrilled at this opportunity” and that, “This is not about me, this is about y’all.” Several other senior staff spoke about their excitement about the future of the firm. The meeting ended with a resounding ovation for Podesta.

Maybe they’ll give him a standing ovation when he’s indicted. Manafort worked for him.

WHO IS TONY PODESTA? RUSSIA PROBE INVESTIGATING BROTHER OF HILLARY CLINTON CAMPAIGN CHAIR
The latest subject of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election is a Democratic lobbyist and the brother of the chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, John Podesta.

Tony Podesta and his lobbying company, the Podesta Group, are now being investigated after ties were discovered with Paul Manafort, the former chairman of the Donald Trump presidential campaign, sources told NBC News.

Mueller has for months being investigating Manafort, who led Trump’s campaign between June and August 2016. FBI agents raided his Virginia home in July, seizing documents and other materials.

The Podesta Group was one of several firms that worked on a Manafort-led campaign for a nonprofit called the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine (ECMU). The campaign promoted Ukraine’s image in the West and was reportedly backed by the Party of Regions, a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine that was previously led by former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

Mueller's team was originally on a fact-finding mission about the ECMU and Manafort’s role in the campaign. But now, it is looking into whether the Podesta Group may have violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which requires people or companies that lobby on behalf of foreign governments or political parties to file disclosures with the Justice Department, sources told NBC News.

Some senior positions seem to be opening up in the corruption field. Everybody gets to move up one chair and double their bribes! Entry level positions are now open, no experience necessary. Professional dress code. This is a soul-free workplace.

I know there's no difference between Ds & Rs, but there's also no difference between parties in Ukraine & Russia?

If this investigation starts to look like an actual, bi-partisan, investigation I'd be surprised as hell but tentatively pleased.

Since the Podesta group has been heavily involved in Russia already and there is a known relationship with Manafort, I believe that Tony Podesta is taking a small fall in order to stop further investigation into Clinton connections.

I keep going back to the fact that Mueller is a part of the deep state and heavily tied to the Clintons. Mueller acted as a mule taking a uranium sample to Russia on behalf of Hillary Clinton.

I may be wrong here, but right now my take on all of this is that they are trying to stop the leaking faucet with a couple of sacrificial lambs in hopes that the dam does not burst taking the Clintons, Mueller and the rest of the deep state with it.

@gulfgal98

He has a long history with the Clintons and I can see how they too can get caught up in this. Now wouldn't that be funny?

For some reason there is nothing about this on ToP. But there is so many people patting themselves on their backs, I might have missed it.

Meanwhile in our unending wars across the pond...... crickets. The Vietnam troops at least knew that people back home knew they were there and were thinking about them. We don't even know how many are involved or where. they are.
I'm wondering what this is a distraction from?

I reread your comment and I agree with you. Since when did sharks eat their own? More theater. Too bad people are falling for it. The Russian hacking Hillary's emails is what gives it away for me.

Tony Podesta Resigns As Head Of Lobbying Firm After Becoming Target In Mueller Probe

As the left and the media ramp up their Manafort-ian mania against Trump, it appears the trail of destruction from special counsel Mueller's probe has spread to Democratic power-lobbyist Tony Podesta.

snip

An NBC report found that the Podesta Group was one of several firms working on Paul Manafort's public relations campaign for European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, which the Podesta Group claims it thought was a nonpartisan think tank

Here's one reason why we suspect more than a few on the left are now concerned...

Would any of this have happened if there hadn't been a coup in Ukraine? Remember the reason why the president was disposed. He refused to let outside corporations steal his country's resources and was working with Russia on restructuring Ukraine's debts.
We know how telling the IMF usually works out.... regime change.

These recent indictments have been selected, not as the beginning of a comprehensive house cleaning, but as an end of a threat to the larger herd of co-conspirators. Mueller himself is a member of the inner circle and is doing his best to protect himself from the possibility of a real investigation and his own indictment.

This is just more Russia! Russia! misdirection. The Uranium One story is the real threat that could begin the unraveling.

@gulfgal98 He was put there as the perfect distraction to Clinton corruption. Anyone who supported the manchild narcissist thinking he would jail Billary and do anything to benefit the (white) working class got played like a cheap fiddle.

So far, like FL's governor Rick Scott, he's used the presidency purely as a tool to enrich himself. And many working class dupes go along with it because hey, at least he isn't Hillary, right? At least he'll get rid of the immigrants, right?

Like I said: Willing dupes from Trumpy Boy to the white working class and other idiots who support him.

@gulfgal98 What I am wondering is what was agreed to be not investigated by Podesta resigning? While I am glad to see one of those "international businessmen" scumbags being indicted, I think we will wait a long time for similar accountability among the Clinton following.

Who appoints special prosecutors? Why can't Trump simply appoint one to look into Clinton activities, starting with Haiti?

Personally, I'm not going to bet against the resignation being for the optics and his reinstatement after a show-trial discovering that he merely 'made a mistake because incapable of understanding law essential to his position', since that worked so well for Hillary, thereby establishing precedent for this type of excuse for the crimes of the most corrupt and powerful.

if it gets that far and it looks like he is facing a long prison sentence he will be "Suicided" and just another convenient death of someone close to the Clintons.

'We're Not Intimidated': Tucker Responds to Legal Threat From Podesta Lawyer

"The letter demands that this show 'immediately cease and desist disseminating false and misleading reports about Mr. Podesta and the Podesta Group,'" Carlson said. "It demands we retract and delete all our prior reporting on the Podesta Group and warns that if we don't do this 'Mr. Podesta may pursue legal action, including for damages, in order to fully protect his rights.'"

He said Garinther's letter also claims that Manafort did not work with the Podesta Group in its representation of the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine.

"Apparently that lawyer hasn't read the Manafort indictment yet," Carlson said.

He argued that Garinther is simply trying to threaten his show and shut down his reporting on the Podesta Group.

Great work, Gulf Gal.

The visiblity of the military in running the govt. of Trumpland, and the obvious war between various factions of the intelligence agencies and opposed forces within the shadow govt. has pulled back the veil on what has been developing (I agree) since end of World War II -- and that Eisenhower warned us about. Obama was much better at making it all look pretty.

I watched Ta-Nehisi Coates on Book TV this past week addressing a largely African American audience in the AME church in DC. One woman stood up and referenced the role of Cointelpro in subverting progressive Black movements and organzations, the assassinations and imprisonment of progressive leaders, etc. She asked Coates if he was going to write the book on this one.

His answer was instructive. He told her he couldn't possibly give her his most direct answer while on camera and said that he probably won't write that book, because -- as he said he had recently commented to his wife -- "We don't have an army."

He said he has no common ground with liberals who want to make room for what are essentially proto-Fascist elements in our society. He asserted "this is war." Paraphrasing, he said that he doesn't seek common ground with neoliberals and forces who are truly our enemies, who do not care for or support the well-being of most members of our society.

I too have observed the militarization of local police forces, the violent suppression of movements such as Occupy, the unpunished assassination of young Black men in most cities through the U.S., and the calls for elimination of freedom to protest and even to speak.

The sham of the primary election in 2016 took away any sense that we could use the ballot box to create change. If we don't acknowledge the subversion of electoral politics, we can't begin to fight back. It may, of course, already be too late. As Chris Hedges says, the coup may already have happened -- and that is what we are witnessing.

So it's very important to extend the analysis that you have begun, in order to assess possible strategies for pushing back, for intensifying the contradictions within the Shadow Government itself. It is important also to understand that the analysis and exposure of how regimes based on dictatorial financial power and military force are risky arguments to make. Their response to internal threats is increasingly the same as the response to external threats -- violent suppression without explanation or justification.

One version of such an analysis -- and it's projection in the near-term - is that indeed the empire is crumbling and that inevitably it will fail. China is already making significant gains with other nations by offering them economic help (rather than drone warfare) and, oddly enough, by offering support for various levels of democracy and sustainable development -- greater than those experienced in the nations that the U.S. has subjugated and destroyed. India's economy is growing rapidly and finding less reason to pay subsistence level wages to the outsourced minions of multinational corporations headquartered in the U.S.

The shift in world power --financially and militarily -- will be a source of external pressure on this corrupt state that we have allowed to consolidate. For those of us in the belly of the beast, what forms of resistance are possible? Certainly research and evidence about the nature of the state we already inhabit is crucial. As Ta-Nehisi said, "we need more people" to write, to analyze, to uncover the nature of the power structure -- to understand the nature of the deep state, its origins, and to look for and exploit every crack and fissure resulting from the inter-class conflicts which are visible at the top.

The power blocs that you correctly describe are not without their contradictions. In fact, perhaps the most significant aspect of all the Russia-mania is the recognition that Putin et. al. saw how desperately corrupt our state is and how easy it is to sow discord and mistrust on all sides.

So if that is a lesson in what we are observing, then it is possible to create division even at the levels at which absolute power is controlled. Perhaps one line of inquiry is to figure out how to do that from a progressive or left perspective. As Bernie said the other day, the vast majority of Americans are not losing sleep over what Russia may or may not have done to the various factions of the ruling power stucture, nor how they hurt or helped those squealing Siamese twins, HIllary and Donald. This sideshow is just a distraction from the fundamental issues: economic survival for the 99% and of the loss of democracy are at the heart of the matter.

The modes of struggle, however, may have to be re-examined and reinvented during this current phase. I think, as Americans, we have been led to believe, somewhat arrogantly and unrealistically, that we can exercise rights and freedoms that are guaranteed and protected.

Instead, we may have to recognize that we are more like the citizens of France and Belgium during the Fascist occupation. We may no longer have the means to liberate ourselves without lots of help. So considering how to direct energies of meaningful resistance, how to seek alliances and how to avoid the dangerous forcess of neo-liberal collaboration are essential and urgent steps to consider, as we continue with the analysis you have begun.
