By their friends you shall know them.

OK, this is simply blowing my mind. I was over reading on DKOS and I came across this gem where they are throwing non-other than Jimmy Carter under the bus.

I was shocked by many of his comments too, some seemed closer to Trump than to progressives.
DailyKOS: Jeebus. Jimmy Carter - "...the media have been harder on Trump than any other president..."

Yes, Jimmy Carter is thrown under the bus because he dared to say things like this:

When I asked about Trump’s souring our image in the world, Carter defended his successor. “Well, he might be escalating it but I think that precedes Trump,” he said.
NYT: Jimmy Carter Lusts for a Trump Posting

I'm not terribly surprised that Jimmy Carter isn't following the establishment narrative. In his recent years, he seems to be following no narrative but his own. But suggesting that the problems we see today didn't start with Trump is not JC's biggest sin. No, that honor goes to this gem:

I wondered how the starchy Carter, who put out a White House edict that nobody could fly first class, felt about the louche Trump White House, where conflict of interest has been replaced by confluence of interest.

“I think the media have been harder on Trump than any other president certainly that I’ve known about,” Carter replied. “I think they feel free to claim that Trump is mentally deranged and everything else without hesitation.”

Since Rosalynn’s focus as first lady was mental health, I asked her if we should break the last taboo and let presidents have a White House shrink.

“I think it might help them,” she said with a smile.

She told me that she was left out of a first ladies lunch held by Michelle Obama on the issue of mental health, making it clear that she was still hurt.
(emphasis mine)

So in essence, Carter criticized the media and he was cast down by establishment Democrats.

Not to worry though. Establishment Democrats have plenty of friends. They are very cozy with The Bush dynasty. And then there's this guy:

Sure, in both cases, we're talking bloody handed war criminals but at least they criticize Trump appropriately.

I'd say this is an excellent synopsis of what the Democratic Party stands for. It stands against Trump and it stands for anything which stands against Trump -- unless of course that thing might inconvenience the oligarchs. When we get to universal health care they stand with Trump.

pretty much trashed every 'Democratic' president in defence of Obama over the years, so who's surprised?

The vitriol spewed against FDR on a regular basis should have been a clue. The guy wasn't perfect, but compared to Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, etc.......

It's a very strange site.

Quite clearly killing a few hundred thousand people in cold blood is not as great a sin as not standing assiduously by team blue. So you may be right. Then again, Harvey whatshisface stood proudly by team blue and he's been cast aside. So perhaps a few decades of sexual assault is a greater sin?

So they're using him as a lightning rod and, quite successfully, getting people to ignore the actual problem.

In my mind this guy has been doing this shit for 3 decades and EVERYONE knew. Hell, even I knew that stuff like that wasn't uncommon in Hollywood. It is the very picture of "rape culture" laid out for all of us to see and we, as a society, are complicit.

Or, I could tune the focus down a bit and just look at "Hollywood". Where are the mass boycotts for an entire industry which knowingly allowed this to happen?

Yeah, let's burn good ol' Harvey though... as if that was going to change the problem even one iota.

The media couldn't say enough nice things about him during the general election because Hillary's bright idea of having them play her pied piper game. Are they aware that she had them do this because she was afraid that her emails were going to be a problem for them?
And the DP that is using the press to push their excuses for why Herheinous lost.
There are few people I still recognize, but there have been so many new members who only recently became members.
Many of them were from the correct the record pushback against people saying bad things about Hillary and they stayed because their egos were stroked.
Throwing Jimmy under the bus shouldn't have been surprising to anyone because of how deranged they became after Trump won. They are finding any excuse that they can so they can keep denying the real reason for why She lost.

Disgusting, abysmal, vile, hateful, repugnant and shameful are a few others. They spent a year calling anyone who criticized Hillary sexists and misogynists, but they have been writing diaries about Melena.
She was seen wearing very high heels when boarding Air Force one on their way to Puerto Rico and the comments they made were the definition of sexists.
Same with any of her ideas as FLOTUS. They belittle everything she says and does.

They have become abhorrent miscreants and I don't recognize most of the people I used to respect.
All because Hillary lost the election. And she lost it because she was a horrible candidate and a horrible human being.

The hatred that they feel for Bernie is off the charts. Just because he said some bad things about Hillary. They have forgotten about the horrible things that she said about Obama, especially after it looked like she was going to lose to him.
Some of the things she said about him bordered on racism and never forget her comment about why she was staying in the race after she knew she couldn't win it.

As President, he oversaw:

a. deregulation of industries
b. an increase in military spending
c. a decrease in the federal deficit from its levels under his Republican predecessors

... yet, he was taken down by an opponent demanding:

a. deregulation of industries
b. an increase in military spending
c. a decrease in the federal deficit

His administration was quite conservative -- neoliberal, really, especially on foreign policy. Yet his life afterwards has reflected personal values in direct conflict with the character of his administration.

It's one of those things that makes you wonder how much power any president really has. He's certainly done far more good as an ex-president than he ever did in the oval office, the Camp David accords notwithstanding. (One final bizarre footnote: Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize for ... nothing, actually; while Carter was explicitly excluded when they gave the prize to Sadat and Begin.)

My assessment (pure guesswork) is that he was early enough in the neoliberal train that some of those ideas seemed like good ideas at the time. He clearly regrets what it has grown in to. I don't hold him accountable in exactly the same way I do Obama even as I acknowledge his role in the growth of neoliberalism. I suspect he'd acknowledge that also.

I agree I like him better as an ex-President though.

were in the process of dropping Peter Drucker’s idea of top management as having a responsibility to society, and switching over to Ayn Rand. Stockholders’ interest über alles.

he was early enough in the neoliberal train that some of those ideas seemed like good ideas at the time

Among those “good ideas” was the concept of the HMO (“health maintenance organization”). Blame the economists and business writers. Remember when all those experts were promoting HMOs as the answer to the healthcare cost explosion? We were told that economic incentives would naturally push an HMO, and thus its patients, toward higher-quality, cost-saving preventive care.

A big swathe of U.S. business went ahead and implemented the HMO model, with the result that a decade or so later, the very idea of HMOs ever acting in patients’ interests had become a standing joke.

And honestly my recollection was that it was awesome. I never had any issue getting the care I needed... including some nasal surgery to make breathing easier. I note that last one because it could've easily been argued as elective had they a mind to. Granted, I never needed something truly expensive but still, my experiences were positive.

In hindsight I still don't think HMO's are any part of the problem. I think the idea that one should profit off the suffering of another is the problem. The very idea is monstrous on the face of it. I wish I'd been thinking along those lines much longer than I have.

Good articles and comments tonight. Sooo much news!
Living up to my name and giving my piece :-)...my understanding is that the clintons don't like JC because of him sending prisoners to Arkansas when clinton was up for re-election. I don't remember the specifics, but it had something to do with that. You can see in several videos, at some d function, where the clintons just walked right past the Carters, without even acknowledging them.Yet, they are friends with the Bush family...probably because of Daddy helping bill with drug runs in Arkansas for the CIA.
It is horribly sad when we find out the truth. I've always defended JC. Until I started reading The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. It was Carter who appointed Volker(?) who raised interest rates astronomically on Latin American countries that we were "helping." We demand debt is paid from these countries and that debt is put on the citizens that were just taken over in a shock-and-awe event. Yes, we are such a great nation.
Another article tonight, or in the comments, mentioned Margaret Thatcher and her fondness of Pinochet. Well, again, look to The Shock Doctrine to spell out how Friedman got a hold of Thatcher. She loved his ideas of austerity and privatizing and taking away all social safety nets for the UK.Why do you think she was hated as much as she was?
Lastly, Deja, are you in Denver? That clip you provided is from our local news. I saw the interaction with them outside talking about her hair spray. I hadn't seen the others, but actually tried looking it up recently...wondering what the hell's going on with them.I don't know if I'm just getting old, but this stuff is really pissing me off. Which pisses me off even more! Look what you made me do????
I hope all here have a good weekend. Do some deep breathing, relax and take care of yourselves.
