Stunning. Shocking. Sadness.
Over fifty people killed, their lives ended. Many more likely to follow from the over 400 that were injured.
It's too early to tell much about this but I initially found myself relieved in a sense, is that the word, that it wasn't some muslim terrorist claiming to be with ISIS. Is that wrong? It certainly doesn't make me glad it happened this way. I worry about the police state expanding, the war OF terror expanding, our lives becoming more and more restricted, our liberty destroyed in the name of "safety".
Then again, what does this say? This may not have been an Islamic terrorist, but it was clearly a terrorist act. What does this portend? A 64 year old white man opened fire from a hotel overlooking a concert? What the hell. What do you do about that? Does this change anything? Doesn't it have to change something? It doesn't really matter why he did it, what his ideology might be, it grossly illustrates the fact that you could die when attending a concert. Anytime, anywhere. We already knew that in a way, this makes it more clear. Very clear.
Is this life in the 21st century? There are so many questions, not just about Stephen Paddock. The death toll isn't even set yet, but it's hard not to wonder what comes next.

Big Al told me jokingly in a comment a couple of days ago that he was right now in Las Vegas to win the lottery and use the money for the revolution. And I joked back, he should try out the German Klassenlotterie, and if he wins should use that money for the revolution.
Now, don't you wait just for an idiot like me to "connect the dots" and say "Big AL must have lost a lot of money in Las Vegas"? And relate that comment to the one above?
That's how fucked up this media and technology is to cause a lot of chaos.

That's one of the things that bothers
me more and more now, we never find out the why and our media does not even CARE about the why. Every time I read about one of these things and find out it's not a "Muslim terrorist" but a middle aged person especially, my first thought goes to absolute despair. I cannot think of anything else that would drive someone to take out other people like that. Maybe I'm horribly naïve or idealistic, but when someone goes that far, I really think it's time to start asking why.
I had this talk today with a gun owning Republican co-worker, we talk through a lot of things and agree on most. Her husband is a private gun dealer. He is outraged that background checks are not more thorough. And she and I both agree that stronger regulation and not selling military grade weapons to civilians should be implemented. And while the NRA fights like hell over that, I think a lot of gun owners would agree with that.
I think there are simply too many guns to ever get them all either. Whenever I hear someone on either side say they should all go or that someone is going to "take" them, I just want to ask how in hell do you do that? There is no logistical way to do that, even under our current police state. It will never happen. So meanwhile, even IF we ever tighten up the laws, it won't stop the nutters. Hell, they can just use a car now anyway.

as they used to say, just not in the way they meant it. I remember how verboten it was to question why what happened then happened. It was always met with a “how dare you?” and any further questioning would have you tarred as supporting the perpetrators. We were just expected to accept what happened as unavoidable.
That worked pretty well for TPTB. The difference is now, when they’re not brown skinned furriners, they’re “lone wolfs” who were disturbed and that’s all the farther it goes. You can’t ask why or suggest less guns would help because you’ll be accused of “politicizing” the event.
And so it goes. Another day, another senseless killing. At what point does the public say enough?
