NY Times Blames Russia for NFL/Trump Anthem Dispute - Congressional Hearings Scheduled
You might have been under the impression that the brouhaha over NFL players protesting during the national anthem was caused by Trump's stupid tweets, but trust me the NY Times knows better than you. Once again Russia's to blame.
A network of Twitter accounts suspected of links to Russia were used this weekend to stoke the controversy over whether NFL players should stand for pregame performances of the national anthem, The New York Times reported late Wednesday. The accounts pushed both sides of the debate, using hashtags such as #boycottnfl, #standforouranthem and #takeaknee, the newspaper reported. [...]
Researchers at the Alliance for Securing Democracy have been monitoring 600 Twitter accounts they have linked to Russian influence operations. Those accounts, operated by human users and suspected bots alike, pushed the opposing messages surrounding the NFL and the playing of the national anthem, researchers said.
Six hundred Twitter accounts - that obviously are under the control of Putin - are destroying America. Just take the word of a bunch of former Bush, Obama and Clinton neocons. The Times does.
Unfuckingbelievablke! (Yes that's a word or it should be). I heard about this on NPR while driving home this afternoon. No evidence is presented in the Times article regarding the validity of these new "Russia did it again" allegations. No, the Times' reporters simply takes the word of a shadowy new organization, the Alliance for Securing Democracy, which is the sole source of their report. This patriotic non-profit organization just happened to be created in July of this year. And guess what? The people behind it are the usual suspects. Take a gander at the allegedly bipartisan "Alliance for Securing Democracy," the NY Times source for this McCarthyist twaddle:
The Alliance for Securing Democracy is a national security advocacy group, that describes itself as a bipartisan transatlantic initiative, with a stated mission of countering what it describes as an "unprecedented attack" on United States democracy by Russia. The alliance is chaired and run primarily by former senior United States intelligence and State Department officials. Its daily operations are led by Laura Rosenberger, a former senior State Department official in the Obama administration, and Jamie Fly, former national security counselor to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)
The membership of the advisory council has been described by the Washington Post as "a who's who of former senior national security officials from both [the Democratic and Republican] parties." The Intercept, an adversarial journalism site, notes the influence of neoconservatives in the Alliance for Securing Democracy. Advisory council member William Kristol and one of the two day-to-day directors, Jamie Fly, have previously cooperated closely on neoconservative causes. The other director, Laura Rosenberger, served as a foreign policy adviser to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and was chief of staff to two Obama national security officials.
William Kristol and people affiliated with Obama, Clinton and Marco Rubio? What a surprise! Here's their mission statement for you, if you had any doubt about their "bipartisan" agenda:
The Alliance for Securing Democracy, a bipartisan, transatlantic initiative housed at The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), will develop comprehensive strategies to defend against, deter, and raise the costs on Russian and other state actors’ efforts to undermine democracy and democratic institutions. The Alliance will work to publicly document and expose Vladimir Putin’s ongoing efforts to subvert democracy in the United States and Europe.
Sounds eerily similar to the Morgan Freeman video released by the also newly formed Committee to Investigate Russia, doesn't it? And their agenda apparently includes federal regulation of the internet, which the national cyber-security expert interviewed by NPR's anchor this afternoon stated was necessary to defend us against the evil Russians and their new "cold war" propaganda campaign to rip apart the fabric of our society, even to the extent of inciting Americans react with violence against one another (yes, he actually said as much) Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook has already been put on notice that Congress is coming for him.
The push to regulate Facebook is on in earnest in Washington, DC—and the company seems resigned to the idea that more oversight is inevitable.
Two Senate Democrats are circulating a letter on Capitol Hill, hoping to drum up support for a bill that would make the social-media giant disclose more information about who is buying political ads on its platform and whom those ads target. Quartz has seen a copy of the letter, dated Sept. 21 and signed by Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Mark Warner of Virginia. “Facebook now seems to realize there is a major gap in transparency and accountability for digital ads,” it reads.
Asked about the letter, a spokesperson for Facebook said that the company is “open to reviewing any specific congressional proposals.”
The Times article notes with glee that Twitter is about to receive the same treatment, and as a result both social media giants are asking for the help of the US Intelligence community to ferret out all the "fake News" bad guys.
“I think right now the public is aware of only a subset of a subset of Russian activity online,” [Representative Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee] said in an interview. He said Facebook long denied that there had been Russian exploitation of its system, before reversing course on Sept. 6.
Mr. Schiff said the tech companies have asked for assistance from American intelligence agencies in trying to find and stop illicit interference from other countries, a request he said he supports.
The House Intelligence Committee announced on Wednesday that it would hold a public hearing on the matter of Russian influence next month, and a Senate aide said Facebook, Twitter and Google have been invited to testify at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Nov. 1.
Gee, I can't imagine what Facebook, Twitter and our alphabet soup of intelligence agencies could gin up to justify censorship by Congressal legislation that could impact individuals and websites that dare to post Fake News rather than the official authorized narrative we receive from our "trusted" media sources like the NY Times, The Washington Post and, of course, the compliant broadcasters at NPR.
The US is ever more rapidly resembling the world George Orwell envisioned in 1984. He just had the year wrong. Should have called it "2017."

Not only do TPTB want to micro-manage what Americans see and say, but all of those on international social platforms such as FB and Twitter. Typical and a logical next step.
This is the final battle, I'm afraid, and I doubt that people will even boycott these controlled social sites to build up any others, any more than any of us organized alternatives to Youtube when the corporate censorship began there with the defunding of sites such as Jimmy Dore's and Redacted Tonight discussing 'sensitive' topics.
We need to fight terrorism masquerading as government, but we none of us know how to do this effectively and in a pacific fashion, so they continue to feed off our unused strength and power to themselves use against us.
Edited for a letter typo and minor reconstruction of a sentence, shifting a misplaced word. Dunno what I've probably missed, lol.

So it wasn't cops killing unarmed black men and women,
it was the Ruskies behind those protests. Now were those Russian rascals responsible for that blown call in Detroit last Sunday?
The real SparkyGump has passed. It was an honor being your human.
I don't know,
but they're a better excuse for the blown call when Chicago roughed Green Bay's kicker after the game was out of reach than the idea that the ref couldn't see what every other person in the country saw.
@SparkyGump
Actually, it's those damn Ruskies trying to tell patriotic US cops that it's not OK for them to exercise their gun rights by killing often-innocuous American civilians apparently for routine random target practice based on their assessed vulnerability, much of this frequently based on what shade their skin is and, to add insult to injury, the Russians even brainwashing unpatriotic Americans into objecting to these frequent police murders of citizens for which no real accountability generally exists.
A murderous police state is a good thing and who could possibly object? Except Enemies of the State who need to be censored and/or nuked! (If the police haven't shot them first, simply for practice.)

Trump's win works for them better
than ever too. I was almost done re-reading this when the thought hit that once again, HER may very well have been willing to lose for the PTB. She does owe them, big time. And look how well it's paying off? They have the big bad boogeyman lunatic in Trump to gin up support for war with Russia, and half the "liberals" are rabidly on board. In our team sport politics this works very well I think. They'll need to work "together" after all to beat out such a world menace. And once it starts, there'll be no one party to blame. If anyone is around to blame anyone.

It was a two'fer
Gin up the support for the war with Russia that was already cooked up by the Obama administration which has already been implemented by NATO putting troops and military equipment in the countries that surround Russia and let Trump appoint the absolutely worst candidates to dismantle our regulatory agencies and let corporations do whatever the fuck they want to our air, water, medications and every other category agency that was created to protect us.
Does anyone think that Hillary would have been allowed to do that? Hell no.
The way that this works is for the democrats to lose control of the senate, house and state governorships so that they would be in no position to block the republicans from doing anything they want. Then watch helplessly as the republicans cut the 1%'s and corporations taxes, gut the social safety programs and get away with whatever the hell is left of our unfunctioning democracy.
Make sure that the police are armed to their balls to stop people from trying to get control of the country.

I think I'm starting to see the light. The US Civil War wasn't about freeing slaves, or even about the South's economic independence.
Nope. It was a big ol' Russian conspiracy. Tsar Nicholas I infiltrated the US Army by planting a Russian agent at West Point. Said Russian agent cleverly assumed the name of a well-regarded Virginia family, Lee, and worked his way up to general. In the meantime, his fellow Russian agent, Jefferson Davis, manipulated the Southern states into seceding. Abraham Lincoln might have been on on it, too, come to think of it.
After losing the Crimean War, the Russian Empire needed somewhere else to expand to. Get the Americans to fight each other, and then Mother Russia swoops in and takes it all.
Hey! What if the Boston Tea Party was a Russian plot, too? What if the whole darn American Revolution was put on by the Russians? Catherine the Great was so supportive of the colonists and admired the Declaration of Independence. Maybe there was a reason for that. Maybe it's because she wrote the darn thing.

Posted from Russia!
Good morning comrades. Доброе утро товарищы.
I'm here in Moscow taking lessons in Russian and discussing politics with a host of fellow students from all over the world. I'm sure that if you looked at my IP address that it indicates that I am in Russia. There are lots of us, Americans in Russia posting. I am not taking orders or money from V.V. Putin, I promise you.
I can give you some idea of what Russians think of this Russian hysteria. They think that we have gone totally insane. The Morgan Freeman video went viral here. The reaction was both laughter and disbelief. You have no idea how the American Liberal has completely destroyed any positive image that may have been created in Russian minds. America has gone batshit insane. Here is a dose of reality:
- Russia and Russians have thought kindly about America for a long time. They have desired to work with them as partners. After all, the cold war is over and the Soviet Union is gone, That's right, all of those Soviet Republics were given their freedom. Since when does an empire do that? How grateful is the West?
- Russia has maintained a positive attitude towards the US and has overlooked US hostilities towards Russia for a very long time. The hope was that Russia and the US could become working partners and solve many of the world's problems, for example, terrorism. Russia has a much deeper built-in issue with this. US arrogance has prevented any real cooperation. Russian positive attitude towards the US was based on the expectation that the US would eventually treat Russia with respect and would respect Russia's interests in the world.
- Russia is now coming to a deep understanding that partnership with the US is impossible, except in a few sectors. The result of this is that Russia will partner with the developing world and not the West. All in all it's a smart move as the developing nations now significantly outpace the West in population, GDP and GDP growth rate. Russia and Russia's friendship is an enormous prize, and always has been historically. Russia is a vast country with vast resources including being the world's largest exporter of grain. Russia has excellent science and world class technology, in some areas significantly ahead of the US. Russia is far better managed than the US.
- America's issues with Russia are mostly if not entirely fantasy. Russians listen and watch American media. I have CNN here on Russian TV. Russians still like Americans but feel that the media and the government have gone completely batshit insane. Much of this is "projection". The US has interfered with elections and overthrows democracies all over the world over a long period of time. Claiming that Russia interfered in American "Democracy" is beyond ridiculous. The interference in American "Democracy" comes from the power and influence of Corporate America.
- Russians don't understand why the US is bombing Syria. There is no legal basis for this at all. The US does this without any coordination with the Syrian government. Therefore civilians are being slaughtered by the dozens and there is no humanitarian aid or relief structure present in Raqqa. It seems that the US doesn't do this. Human Rights Watch has filed complaints with the UN about the Regime in Washington slaughtering civilians half way around the world. The US claims to have investigated this issue, but HRW strongly disagrees. It may be time to insist that the regime in Washington must go.
I think that we are stuck in a very very bad time globally for the US. We have a chorus of small Western nations that are always willing to say "yes sir, send more guns, lawyers and money", to the US but the rest of the world is moving in a much different direction. I don't see how the US gracefully implements a changing role in the world. This could be really bad.
Meanwhile, I'm having a great time in Moscow. This is one of the most livable major cities in Europe. It's also one of the most fascinating for its 870 year history, through Tsars, the Soviet Union and the modern democratic era. It's also one of the cleanest and safest cities in Europe and an incredible bargain because of the devalued Ruble.
Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.
"as partners" just like in the Oliver Stone interviews
reminded me of that 4 part interview with Putin, if I remember right it is how he got "control" of their oligarchs mostly, had them partner with the Russian people instead of just getting stinking rich from their misery. Kinda worked out okay I think, wish somebody here would have the guts to control corruption, make partners for peace instead of war all the time. Spread the wealth.

Thanks for the first-hand update.
There's something so sad about the US rejection of friendship with Russia. I've written about it before. How very small the souls of the Americans appear, as if they have suffered some personal affront from Russia; some direct insult. How they keep the hate juices flowing in this desert of scant experience is mind-boggling. Attitudes toward Cuba are equally pathetic. All this in light of Russia's sincere hope of friendship with the West is such a pity
Of course, psychosis can be the only explanation for such inappropriate US extremism. I watch three different versions of RT: Russian, European, and the US. I'm a propaganda sleuth these days, and I'm seeing very little at RT that can be construed as such. American pundits comprise the majority of programming on the US version. Talent like Larry King, Chris Hedges, Jesse Ventura, Lee Camp, Ed Schultz are the regulars. Their guests include Senators, Congressmen, and more typical DC "experts" and political celebrities. None of them seem to be holding back at all. They all appear more upbeat and confident than their US media counterparts.
So, it was shocking to hear that the US now wants Russia Today to register as a foreign agent. This is a naked attempt to bully and silence the discussions at RT, and it is unprecedented. The Empire is lashing out in its weakness. The nation appears to move ever-closer to diplomatic isolation, while Russia is becoming ubiquitous. The geopolitical world is in motion. I'm actually glad the world has seen the US at a time when it has no self-awareness.
Right on schedule and right out of the Cold War playbook
This morning in my random news feed, I'm seeing headlines like "Russia used fake black activist social media accounts to create NFL issue." I'm really not an expert on the Cold War, but it hit me last night after seeing the attempts to tie this to Russia that this is exactly what they did in the first Cold War. They tried to wrap the Civil Rights movement and it's leaders in Communism and Russia shut it down. No shock that they're trying it again.
But, it puts the Democrats in a very interesting position, as I see it. The Dems have been doubling down on the identity politics and are pretty obviously looking for a Hillary of Color to lead in 2020. And they more or less told the blue collar whites who would eat up that storyline to piss up a rope. I know the first I saw trying to make this connection was coming from the GOP. If I thought they were that clever, I'd say they were pushing this just to put the Democrats in that awkward spot, but I really think they want to bomb Russia just as badly.

People fell for the Bush Admin propaganda back in the day, but perhaps if they knew that such as Dick Cheney (among other familiar names) has his filthy fingers working the policy in the Trump Admin, (as he would have with the Clintons previously busy rehabilitating them during Her campaign,) perhaps they'd recognize and become inoculated against the same pathological lunacy fooling the public again. That being exactly the sort of thing they're trying to crush - the truth ever getting out again. Especially starting with the thereby-made-obsolete Twitter and FB.
