Wednesday Open Thread 03-18-15

Good morning 99percenters!

Ever wonder what shapes birds’ habits at your backyard feeder? According to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds Blog:

Birds are doing a lot more than just feeding when they visit your bird feeder. They are coming and going and interacting with each other in a well-established social pecking order. At first it looks like just a flurry of activity—but watch closely and you’ll start to see the daily struggle of dominance playing out in your backyard. The slow-motion video above walks you through one example to show you what to look for.

They have a quick primer on three common dominance-related behaviors you might see: displacement, threat displays and appeasement. In addition to the videos the site has specific information about avian sociability.

Thanks for stopping by The Caucus. This is an open thread so tell us what’s on your mind today, or tell us what fine-feathered friends you’re seeing in your backyard these days.

Just FYI.

I saw yesterday that you have developed and offered a scheduler, which is fantastic, So I couldn't resist to try it out. I looks like it doesn't want to publish when something is scheduled. May be you have to feed the scheduler some cookies and pet him a little, or may be we just pray a little. Often that helps. Smile

I think you are doing an amazing job all by yourself with this platform. Just saying thank you for your work !!!

Keep on trucking and don't give up.

Cordelia Lear uses it every day for the Open Threads. You have to schedule a diary for at least an hour from the time you set it, maybe that's why it didn't work for you?

in the day's date (put in the 19th instead of the 18th) yesterday night, when I scheduled it for this morning. Then edited the day's date this morning and apparently it took the hour you are talking about before it posted. Sorry, all my bad.

Thanks. JtC

my bedroom window and he wakes me up every morning with heartbreaking chirps. I often wonder what he is saying. I think he/she wants to build a nest in the bush. I have beautiful red feathered and blue feathered birds in my backyard, but don't know their English names. I wished I had less squirrels.
I am thinking of planting hazelnuts bushes/trees, which will end up to be a feast for my squirrels. So what do I do to harvest the hazelnuts for myself instead of being a welfare food bank for my squirrels ?

What's on my mind? Netanyahoo, Obama, War, psycho's, lies, damn lies, and what's next.

Did anyone really believe Netanyahoo wanted a two state solution? Come on now.
I do wonder if those who supposedly have finally realized what his and the Zionists intentions are with
the Palestinians, will ever realize what's been really happening in the Middle East, for whom and why.

Cardinals sift through the seed and block other birds. Doves on the ground, always. Wrens, sparrows, chickadees and even Robins wait for the Cardinals to leave. Cardinals don't like sunflower seeds. Cow Birds, starlings and black birds could care less and don't stop by.

birds as my cardinals? Wink

Generally, the cardinals come early in the morning around dawn and are the last to the feeders in the evening at dusk. My cardinals eat the black oiled sunflower seeds almost exclusively. The birds that run other birds off my feeders are the house finches which are quite aggressive and will camp out on the feeders for long periods. I have several seed feeders. The two hanging feeders get the most action because they are protected from the squirrels, and I also have two pole feeders, one of which has a big tray that the doves and towhees like because they tend to be ground feeders.

I buy a premium mix with peanuts and dried fruit along with the seeds. I pay more for it, but there is less waste because everything in it because it is appealing to at least one variety of bird that comes to my feeders. So many birds love the peanuts, particularly the titmice and nuthatches and it is hard to find a mix with peanuts in it. The wrens are the worst for throwing out seeds on the ground, but most other birds find what they want without throwing out seed.

When I get time, I am planning on writing a diary about my birds and what I have observed in the last several years.

Hope you had a good time at the Saint Pat's party. We opted for a late, quiet dinner this time, but it was enjoyable.

A lot of the people there were people I had once worked with so it was fun seeing them. My friend is the hostess with the mostess and her hubby enjoys having people over too. She is skinny, but loves to cook and her dinners are always wonderful. I do not eat much meat any more, although I am not truly a vegetarian and probably never will be. I just eat it maybe twice a week in small amounts, so eating the corned beef was really rich for my stomach, but it was good. And the pistachio almond rum cake was devoured. And a good time was had by all. Smile

eat black oiled sunflower seeds too. We started buying it to specifically attract cardinals. We deal with the finches by putting out feeders that cater to finches and buy finch food.

Every morning, I walk out to the street to retrieve the newspaper. Yesterday, I was greeted by a cacophony of song birds, I counted at least a dozen different songs. New England and Great Lakes they are on the way!

'cause for several days, I was caring for an elderly relative, and returning during early morning hours (3:00 to 5:00 a.m.) after I was relieved.

Anyhoo, there was a 'racket' here one morning when I came in. Wink It was immediately after the last severe cold snap.

I suspect that they were celebrating that winter (hopefully) was over.

Best of all, 'our rabbits' are coming around a lot more--I adore them!
