Pelosi declines to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders' single-payer healthcare bill

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) declined Tuesday to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders' single-payer healthcare bill, saying her immediate goal is to protect the Affordable Care Act from President Trump's efforts to dismantle it.

Pelosi made it clear that her distance from the bill, which Sanders expects to unveil with top progressives this week, creating something of a litmus test for Democrats, had little to do with its contents. Rather she is working on more incremental gains to preserve and expand coverage for as many Americans as possible, despite Republican opposition to Obamacare, she said.

"Right now, I’m protecting the Affordable Care Act," Pelosi told a small group of reporters at a meeting Tuesday in her Capitol Hill office. "None of these other things, whether it’s Bernie’s [bill], can really prevail unless we have the Affordable Care Act protected."

*

"I’ve been carrying single-payer signs as party chair of California," she said, referring to her tenure decades ago as state party leader. "I’m a progressive from San Francisco. Proud liberal. I have my own kind of credibility on these subjects."

They are never going to throw him a bone. And the ONLY person who seems not to knows what's going on is Sanders.

**UPDATE**

'Groundbreaking': Democratic Co-Sponsors Rush Aboard Bernie's Medicare for All Train

While holdouts like Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) prefer "marketplace" choices, a full quarter of caucus now backing single-payer bill.

A quarter of Democratic Caucus members in the U.S. Senate have now signed on as co-sponsors of Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) Medicare for All bill, which he plans to introduce Wednesday, signaling a shift among party lawmakers, who may be swayed by recent polling that has indicated a majority of Americans and more than two-thirds of Democrats favor a single-payer national healthcare system.

As of this writing on Tuesday afternoon, the 12 co-sponsors are:

Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.)
Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.)
Cory Booker (D-N.J.)
Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)
Kamala Harris (D-Calif.)
Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii)
Ed Markey (D-Mass.)
Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.)
Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii)
Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)
Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.)
Tom Udall (D-N.M.)

Lots of garbled words and a image that I couldn't tell what it even meant.
Then he posted another image that represented MFA and was Bernie's bill. Then he totally crapped all over Bernie's legislation and told everyone that he is a proud incrementalist.
I'm sure you can imagine how the comments went.
One person wrote that she was fine with incrementalism and thought that it should take 20-30 years for everyone to be covered by MFA.
Those people don't care that many people can't even use their insurance because of how high their premiums and deductibles are.
Instead of saving $2,500 a year like Obama told us, their premiums went up over $4,000 a year. No wonder Pelosi wants to protect the ACA. The insurance companies are getting $300 billion. What's not to like?
I'm not surprised about this.

unlike Liz and Kamala out pandering to the progressives. Nancy is an honest politician damn it, she tells it just like it is! s/ I have about the same admiration for her I do for the Klan - at least they're honest about their ugliness, unlike the rest of the lying shills.

Edit to add: Now I certainly have no real "admiration" for the Klan, don't take that wrong. And maybe their hoods don't really make them all that honest, but they won't lie and truly deny what they are either. And our Democrats certainly cannot say they do anything close to not denying who THEY are. They smile while inserting the knife where at least the Klansmen might be smiling but he'd also be telling you the truth about just who he is.

And they can't even understand how revealing it is that they refer to 'Bernie's backers' and Bernie's fans' because the notion of actually representing the people is so alien to them.

As they consistently demonstrate, they believe that the public is supposed to shut up, do as they're told and come to heel, because they are their masters, not public servants.

While holdouts like Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) prefer "marketplace" choices

Neither of Washington State's Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, is supporting Bernie's bill. They're both Big Pharma types, especially Murray, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars received in donations.

As far as I know, Murray and Cantwell haven't made any public statements about single payer. However, people who have contacted Murray to ask that she sign on to Bernie's bill are being told "I'm not supporting it because I want more choices in the marketplace".

That's almost word-for-word what Tim Kaine said. It's the standard neoliberal line. Everything is always and only about "the marketplace", not about serving the American people.

Most people I know want health care when they need it. Not "more choices in the insurance marketplace".
