Phoenix crowd videos itself committing hate crime

Phoenix transgender teen Dakota Kern, 18, was invited to a pool party this past weekend. She shouldn't have gone.

A crowd of at least a dozen started yelling homophobic and transphobic slurs at Dakota and her friend before someone grabbed Dakota by the hair, punched her a few times, knocking her to the ground, and someone took live video of at least three people kicking her repeatedly.

Police have arrested a 15-year-old. They say they are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

On one hand, I want you to know I read it and cared. On the other hand...

On the bright side, such as it is, I notice the report routinely referred to her by her chosen gender. So there's something.

Before watching the video, I had thought that the attack was something that occurred in transit to the party.

But no, it was actually at said party. So these people lured her in and then attacked her?

Just disgusting.

@Strife Delivery Where did they learn to hate her for simply being who she is? What role have the adults in these kids lives - parents, teachers, coaches, religious leaders - played that would lead to them committing such a nasty, heinous act?

Brenda Jones: I am not condoning violence, but Dakota Stern should not have beaten up the young black girl in the video that he posted on Facebook.

Trans woman attacked at Phoenix pool party — days after sharing video of herself beating a black girl

On August 12, just four days earlier, Kern had shared a video of herself pulling a black teen by the hair and pummeling her in the head. The Facebook video shows Kern calling the black girl a “b*tch” as she drags her across pavement. Kern also says in the video not to call her a “dude.”

There's a couple of quotes indicating the pool party attack was retaliation for this incident. Sigh.
