An astute comment on our times courtesy of YouTube.
We all are familiar with YouTube, and most of us have embedded references to their materials here on c99.
Today, I ran into a Comment so astute I had to share it, which I will in a minute.
First, a touch of context. My love of the Grateful Dead's music is well known, as my userID proclaims the fact. But it is not as well known that I also love almost all "classic rock" from the 1970s, including the "soft rock" that was around back then.
One of those tunes was Paul Davis' "Cool Night":

Now for the money quote. "The Logic Junkie" offered the following comment:
The music of the mid-to-late 70s is the only thing that's gotten me through the nightmare torture dungeon this world has become ever since. If nothing else, it gives me somewhere I can retreat to for awhile to feel right again. The 70s aren't just a time, they're a place -- a haven. Whereas everywhere I grew up has changed for the absolute worst and spiritually died altogether, the 70s remain my one true hometown of time.
"Nightmare Torture Dungeon" !!
Truer words were seldom uttered!
You can catch the comment thread here.
I just thought the rest of us c99ers should be apprised of this. The Rebellion, much like the "Rejected Stone" of the ancient Alchemists, pops up in the most surprising of places!

I save a few pieces of music for when I feel a little down.
For example, the chorus 'Man born of desire' from Sir Hubert Parry's Invocation to Music, always brings tears to my eyes, especially with the soprano's high note, and sets things to rights personally. Written in the 1890's, not the 1970's, but gets me through life,.... and the Nightmare Torture Dungeon doesn't seem to suck so much!

music does the healing
It's the Music that does the healing, and Music that is really our salvation.
I really think that's our species' real role in the greater scheme of things: making Music.

I transcribed a choral piece by Sir John Goss
for the organ at my mother-in-law's funeral.
Lovely piece, but very odd to hear in the circumstances.

I graduated from HS in 1970. I have always
gone ballastic over R & B dating back to 1963 when I heard top 40 tunes on a babysitter's AM radio. Figured I'd post this one. Great tune and badly maligned musical genre!!

Tasty! It's been awhile since I've heard that tune -- uncut and untrammeled, that is!
Thank you, orlbucfan!

Rains in Africa.
6 years ago, I was given a trip to S. Africa. Very much a fluke. (The former friend who gave me this gift trip hasn't spoken to me in 2 years. That was just about the time she became a millionaire.)
And at night, it gently rained, a sound on a canvas tent that is the noise in my head forever. In the morning, gentle rain. During dry season, another fluke.
Many beautiful voices, many meaningful melodies.
Bach played to his audience. Mozart played to his. Never sell short that Verdi transitioned from composing about royals to the little people.
No voice, no music from any era should be crassly dismissed because every single one of them portrayed in their art their hopes and their dreams.
It was their truth.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Dismiss no voice and no music!
True that! Even if I can't stand it myself -- and with me, that applies to only a tiny minority of all music these days -- it still portrays the hopes, dreams, and frustrations of the artists and their audiences.

I'm sure you've probably seen this onthecusp
but your comment made me go look it up again. Yep, just as great as I recalled.

Perpetuum Jazzile
on the cusp may have seen it before, but I certainly hadn't! I hadn't even heard of Perpetuum Jazzile before now!
So I went and checked it out.... awesomely impressive!
Thank you for posting that, Phoebe!

I do esoteric, but
this is nowhere near my area of expertise:
thanatokephaloides
re: esoteric
thanatokephaloides is a compound name with Greek components:
θάνατος, thanatos, death
κεφάλι, kephali, head
-οίδες. -oides, "like" -- a clue that the entire term is a kludge
After flying with that userID for awhile at TOP, it was drawn to my attention that, strictly speaking, "necrokephaloides" is actually a closer translation to what I wanted, i.e., "Dead Head".
I was forced to this juncture because on nearly all blogs, there's already an existing user named "Dead Head", usually someone in his 70s (like the surviving principals of the Grateful Dead themselves).
I hope that clears things up just a touch!

Thanks for the lession
necro (re: necrosis) would have been a dead giveaway. I can sometimes decipher a bit of Greek but for the most part it is just greek to me. On the other hand Latin is a bit more accessible as I once studied and have since forgotten most of it.
Ok, now it makes sense
I admit as a fellow deadhead myself (first dead concert was in '71), you had me scratching my head with the "as my userID proclaims".
My first thought was that "than a toke" was some kind of reference to smokin a doobie.

than a toke
Must have been one hell of a doobie!

I got the thanato, but not the rest, clever.

I saw that comment.
Because I, too, use the music of the 70s in just that way.
Oddly, I also use Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz that way!

I'm wondering if some
I'm wondering if some algorithm has just been implemented on YouTube, as, watching a Redacted segment, I attempted to leave a comment to the effect that public property belonged to the public and that any actual Justice Department would order the return of stolen property to the victims from those who'd knowingly purchased stolen property from thieves - which comment failed to post, twice. And immediately thereafter, my ability to comment on YouTube was gone, with the comment button greyed out...
So, I hope that there will still be commentary on YouTube which supports such notions as that of countries being democratic and ordered by law, not men, and that this was merely some glitch...
Edit: just tested yet again and the comment ability has returned, so that appears to have been a glitch or some other oddity, thank goodness. Except that the problem may be with my computer...
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
