Today I Wept

I'm not one of the flag pin wearing patriots, but I love my country for what it gave me from birth; family, friends and lovers. I'm proud of its beauty and diversity yet still not blinkered enough to ignore its baser realities. Far from perfect far from being the worst.

The Bush years made me angry for sure, Obama could have done oh so much better. However I have never seen the like of what I have seen the last few days.

When I was asked by a friend what I thought when watching this horror show-

I burst into tears.

This was no gentle weep

A full blown flood of anguish.

That subsided into rage.

We expats are a funny lot, no longer in our country of birth but tied to it in very deep and sometimes unexpected ways, sometimes it takes a hideous shit like Trump to bring visceral feelings crashing to the fore.

Trump is our face to the world.

Jesus is not the only one that can weep.

Taibbi has a story on Rolling Stones about the democrats need a new message. Since Trump has become president, the democrats have lost even more standing in the polls. And still the democrats refuse to change anything about which way they are going to represent us. The Clinton/Obama hold over the DP is too strong. Until they move away from triangulation, they aren't going do jack shit for us.
This is quite shocking , IMO.

The Democrats are now hovering around 40 percent, just a hair over the Trump-tarnished Republicans, at 39 percent. Similar surveys have shown that despite the near daily barrage of news stories pegging the president as a bumbling incompetent in the employ of a hostile foreign power, Trump, incredibly, would still beat Hillary Clinton in a rematch today, and perhaps even by a larger margin than before.
(snip)
The Democrats have forgotten this. While it may not be the case with Quist, who seems to have run a decent campaign, the Democrats in general have lost the ability (and the inclination) to reach out to the entire population.

They're continuing, if not worsening, last year's mistake of running almost exclusively on Trump/Republican negatives. The Correct the Record types who police the Internet on the party's behalf are relentless on that score, seeming to spend most of their time denouncing people for their wrong opinions or party disloyalty. They don't seem to have anything to say to voters in flyover country, except to point out that they're (at best) dupes for falling for Republican rhetoric.

But "Republicans are bad" isn't a message or a plan, which is why the Democrats have managed the near impossible: losing ground overall during the singular catastrophe of the Trump presidency.
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/features/taibbi-the-democrats-need-...

There are some days where I wonder if TPTB didn't put Trump in office so that he could remove every regulation that keeps our air, water and infrastructure safe and to dismantle our social programs.
His budget is pretty much the republican's wet dream.
And once he has fulfilled his duty, they will then remove him from office and let Pence install the Christian agenda that's based on the Old Testament.

@snoopydawg That Bill and Hill, while they really thought he'd be easy to beat what with not even bothering to use the dog whistle but a bull horn, are fine in the end with him winning. This is just show. These people want to bleed every last dime they can out of Americans and the rest of the entire globe and they don't even really have to lie about it anymore. They've got the media and the maybe slim majority (I like to think it's slim but I'm not so sure) that still listen to the MSM Bullshit and buy it completely, and it's obvious to the rest who know better but we aren't a majority. Once Trump dismantles everything they get to ride to the rescue, but really, just won't be able to really DO anything. Taibbi writes about what Hillary did after she lost to Obama. She thought that people chose him because his campaign was better run. She never accepts that the problem is her.

If someone wins an election, the inevitable Beltway conclusion is that the winner had better puppeteers

I agree with you on them being okay with Trump winning and after he dismantles everything, people will put them in power again, just like we did in 2006, when they ran on rolling back the Bush abuses, and instead of even trying to do that, they continued to vote with the republicans on more wars and more austerity.
When they had the majority for two years, (except there were too many blue dogs excuse) what legislation did they try to pass? The ACA was supposed to be a step toward single payer, but has anyone worked on making the ACA better or working for single payer? Nope.
Obama expanded on everything that the Bush administration did. And he got a pass for doing it.

I highly recommend reading that too. The authors did a great job of exposing the inside of her campaign.
After she lost to Obama, she believed that his puppet masters were better than hers. She can't believe that people didn't vote for her because of her policies, her baggage and her warmongering, to name a few issues.
So after she lost the election, the Clintons did two things.
1- she got copies of her staff's emails to see if people were working behind the scenes and not working hard enough for her to win. I find that creepy.
2- they made up a loyalty list and everyone who wasn't really loyal got Bill doing everything he could to make sure that they didn't win their re-election. The Clinton hit list Smile

has a far more nefarious purpose. It absorbs the outrage of millions of people and makes it harder for us to reach them. People gather and chant about Russia and "not Trump." It feels good. It provides the illusion of doing something. It's a continuation of the Clinton campaign, except she could never get a fraction of that many people to a rally.

If you're saying that Clinton, and Feinstein and others too numerous to mention prefer Trump to Bernie, I agree. The thin layers of silver lining in all these dark clouds is that people agree with us on the issues to an extent that shocked the establishment. Medicare for all could be used as a wedge issue to separate us from them and to get more of us elected. They want us on perpetual defense. Elected officials can't cosponsor single payer. They need all their energy to protect Obamacare. (How much effort does it take to add your name to a bill?) Are you blind/retarded? And so it goes.

after writer after writer wrote that the DP didn't learn their lesson after losing the presidential election. They know damned well why they lost it, but they don't care.
They made it very clear that they would have rather lost to Trump then let Bernie win.
They certainly could have asked themselves why they lost over 900 seats at the federal level during Obama's tenure.
I believe the reason they lost so many seats was because of Obama's betrayal of going back on his Yes We Can campaign. We Could Have if he had bothered to try.
But after what they did in 2006, how could anyone believe that they would keep their promise the next time they ran on that?

ETA: another reason they lost is that the DCCC and other organizations put up crappy candidateto run or in some cases, didn't even bother to run a candidate and the republican candidate ran unopposed.

@snoopydawg in the Dean campaign, I've been questioning the dems. Even well before then, after seeing repeated failures that were inexplicable, I considered that the repubs had taken over the dems.

Now I believe that I know for sure that the dems have been taken over. No other reason can explain the failures. After all, the dems at the helm are not that stupid. They do quite well for themselves. They know how to get what they really want. And they don't want to represent regular people anymore.

The substance they can manage — witness Trump’s 180-degree turns on foreign policy.

We’ve already seen that the intelligence community and the generals can just ignore a president’s orders, or even actively work to bring down a president when it suits them.

It’s like Andrew Jackson versus the Supreme Court, or George W. Bush’s “unitary executive” ignoring Congressional subpoenas. “John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it.”

Actually enforcing decisions ultimately relies on having armed and loyal people at the bottom of the reporting chain who will obey your commands. If that chain of loyalty breaks down for whatever reason, the civilian nominal chief executive can quickly discover how little actual authority he has.

What was that thing Mao said? Something about a relationship between power and guns?

Trump's budget apparently does not cut Meals On Wheels, it cuts block grants that are used to fund programs including Meals On Wheels. Why the quibble? Because most governors and state assemblies won't cut MOW - because it is the most visible program. Then the public will say, "see. MOW wasn't cut, it was all just the Democrats lying again".
