Open Thread - Rants, Muses, Books & Music (and Some Cooking Too).

It's good to see you. Come on in, leave your shoes in the hallway, we've got fire on the stove preparing lunch for later. In the meantime, browse the bookshelves and plunk down on the sofa with one, or pick out some tunes from the music library or come in to the kitchen to help with the cooking. Our special blend of tea is steeping and will be right up.

Make yourself at home...

Hey folks. Had another good and solid reminder this weekend of why adhering to a policy of wearing political t-shirts in public and plastering one's vehicle with progressive/radical bumperstickers is worthwhile.

Shirts, buttons, and bumperstickers can potentially open up dialogue in any number of directions. It gives one a chance to gauge the degree to which the propaganda is working on the masses and what the current themes/slogans are. As well it's an opportunity to develop some camaraderie with folks who are more than not on our side, but often misguided by the MSM who are falsely framing the issues in presenting to us "the news." And in this particular case it also afforded me a personal opportunity for which I was grateful.

This weekend I was up at an exclusive country club in the Tri-State area with my van. I've probably mentioned that vehicle before. The back doors of it are covered with very Left bumperstickers, which consist of these few and more, "We Are the 99%"/"Don't Trust The Corporate Media"/"Corporate Plan for America: Loot It and Leave It."

It's always a hoot for me to drive into these posh places in such a ride. For there are those who probably tense up at the reminder of their protected upper class status or get temporarily annoyed at the breach of decorum of one wearing his politics on his sleeve, as it were. But there are also those who are either the hired help/performer or invitees who normally wouldn't find themselves in such pampered conditions, who would probably smile to themselves at those acknowledgments and perhaps, even be piqued to approach the person pronouncing such statements, or at least be inclined to talk more freely with another since the political stands have been made right out in the open.

As I was standing next to my vehicle after we just pulled in, a guy in a black suit walked by, then back again. I decided to be jokingly confrontational, "Is there anything you disagree with?" He smiled and said, "my drummer is going to love this; he's a Trump fan." Turns out he was the guitar player in the band and was joking about his drummer. We had a nice friendly chat about politics and music, and when I said I was a fan of his drummer's from way back when, he said he'd introduce me later.

In the meantime, I had noticed that after the cocktail hour, of which we were waiting for to end so we could get to our work, there was a couple who lingered on the veranda after all the others moved on. They were sharp-dressed and could have been bankers or something, but from a distance seemed slightly hipper. Their eyes kept coming back in my direction. Meanwhile, just to give you an idea of the mentality of the people whose party it was: the party planner or organizer said to our guy, "oh, you can park over by the stables; the other area is for the real people." She actually said that, and then caught herself. I don't think anyone here reading this doubts that would be a mild version of what this class of people think of the 99%.

While I was setting up in an adjoining room to the main one where the party was assembled (and incidentally, wearing a black, activist t-shirt that said, "We Will Not be Silent" with the statement written in Arabic underneath), they approached me, making a joke that set me at ease. They wanted to thank me for such bumperstickers and explained that they were there as guests of someone. It was clear up close and once they started to speak that they were artists; the woman was tattooed and the man spoke with what sounded like a French accent. We got into it relaxedly after that. It's important to take public stands, I said, to have these conversations. It was the Dems that gave us Trump, and Hillary was faux feminism, and so forth. The woman nodded along in agreement, smiling. It was heartening, relieving and restored my faith. Those situations can be bleak, and this encounter revived my spirits.

Next, I hear my name being called from that stage, as I'm being invited to meet the celebrated drummer. We have a lively and warm chat about the profession and his amazing career, which now included his touring the world with an internationally famous blues revue band. Tells me he liked the picture of my van. Politically, he was Left, for sure.

But it was soon apparent that his views were within the framework of the MSM. Trump is horrible (yes! but he's a product of the corrupt duopoly system), Hillary lost mostly because men didn't want to vote her (probably cost her some votes, but I don't think it was that. they were both so loathed, and ultimately she didn't speak for any of the disenfranchised and was seen as more of the same) and Bernie was probably too radical (not at all. his platforms polled at 70% and upward with the American people). I said the DNC cheated, that there was lots of evidence they colluded to crush Bernie, and that Bernie would have absolutely destroyed Trump in the election. It was a good reminder that, when given an opportunity to present a view that hasn't been touched by the MSM, one must do so and get people to question where they're getting their news. That led to him admitting that his nephew read more radical publications, which I said I did too, and that there was a difference in the kind of dissent to be found in those views.

Later on as we were about to leave, a young and excitable guy came up and wanted to chat about how easy the party was for him and how it wasn't a bad living, despite working for rich people. He was smoking a cigarette too close to me and seemed only to want to talk about trivial things. After stepping back out of the smoke, I attempted to see if the conversation was worth sticking around for. I laid in something about the clientele and their sense of entitlement. We were off and running then. By the end of the conversation, he was telling me about Seth Rich and the Clintons selling uranium to Russia. I couldn't believe it. To top it off, we talked about the NY State proposals for free college and single payer healthcare, of which he knew specific details. Talk about a 180 degree turnaround. Sometimes just giving someone one more chance reveals the gleaming nugget inside.

I left the place feeling better about the prospect that our comrades are everywhere. We're just not talking with one another as much as we need to be.

I think it's our job to start those conversations wherever we may be.

So, what's going on with you?

Back in the kitchen we're listening to:
Temple of the Dog

(Haven't been able to shake Chris Cornell's death last week. He was a major musical force to me, and I'm still processing the whole thing, but crushed and confounded. At some point I'll get my thoughts together; there's a lot there to traverse for me.
This album was a beautiful, melancholy tribute to his former roommate, Andrew Wood, who was the 24 yr old lead singer of Mother Love Bone who died of an overdose. It was a departure from Soundgarden's dissonant, off-time, thrashing, stomp grooves and was a precursor to what he would accomplish soon after, making Soundgarden a major international band in the mid-90's before they called it quits a few years later, and then reforming fairy recently).

Hunger Strike

I don't mind stealing bread
From the mouth of decadence.
But I can't feed on the powerless
When my cup's already over-filled.

But it's on the table.
The fire's cooking.
And they're farming babies
While the slaves are all working.
Blood is on the table.
The mouths are choking

And I'm going hungry
I'm going hungry...

I was out of town, up in western Tennessee attending the HS graduation of my step-nephew. TN is a beautiful state from east to west. Unfortunately, it's a ignorant deep south state in terms of understanding politics and current events. Sad There are a LOT of rednecks! No surprise there. They are aggressively politically dumb. I wore my Sanders' A FUTURE TO BELIEVE IN t-shirt one day. My family knows I'm a lefty political junkie. LOL. I did have to explain that BO was not a Muslim to a family member who voted for $hrill. Another one, a proud Christian BTW, voted for tRump. Go figure. I travel with a tablet. Man, it's a headache writing on it cos of the automatic copy-editing. It's programmed in, and semi-literate. I'm relieved to be home commenting on my desktop. Rec'd!! Smile

@Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal This is my hubby's side, and they adopted me years ago. I love them just as much. They are absolutely fanatical about education. Probably cos they grew up surrounded by poor whites and/or trailer park/redneck trash. They are educated and very materially successful. They don't trust $hrill, and despise her. I didn't get any trouble or lip wearing my Sanders shirt. The Bernster would have gotten more votes. Unfortunately, there are a lot of good folks there who are totally convinced that voting is a waste of time. That wrong attitude is the big sin to me.

Those parts of the South are still a source of fascination for this NorthEasterner. Actually, my first guitar player's family, who were black and American Indian, were from Tennessee, and he would speak so fondly of visiting family down there. Always meant to go some time with them but never did. Girlfriends and mischief and such that I couldn't bear to be away from as a teenager prevented me from taking the trip.

Yeah, I bet that Hillary voter would have been joined by a few more family members in voting for Bernie instead of against Trump. Glad to hear of you wearing your t-shirt!

Last summer, our Peace vigil disbanded because there were only two of us left, me and Don who was 87. Don who was a founding member, made the call.

I truly miss the once a week Peace vigil every Saturday from noon to one in front of the local courthouse. We would stand there with our signs and people would stop to talk to us, some of whom were self described conservatives. For me, it was all about having those conversations and trying to find common ground. It is amazing what can happen if we have those conversations. We can even bridge those gaps that the establishment has worked so hard to create.

This is a very nice OT this morning. Thanks, Mark.

is giving me a strong desire to want to do something similar here again. There is nothing like getting people together in public to discuss the things on most people's minds but never get broached for all the obvious reasons.

Just a month after Occupy was brutally snuffed out by the cabal of agencies that make up the Orwellian "Domestic Security Alliance," we started our own satellite group under the auspices that Occupy presented. It's almost six years later now, but because of it, I now know dozens of people locally who are similarly progressive, if not radical, a good many of whom I would consider friends and feel i could rely on as a solidarity group if the shit went down.

I love the idea of just sitting under a tree in the park, and putting up a sign with grievances on it, to just see what happens. Probably just some simple bread and butter issues: "Is your rent too high?", "can you afford college tuition?" "is your health insurance company increasing your premiums/deductibles, are you covered for everything you need?" "why is our community beset with high-rise luxury apartments/franchise businesses/banks?" "should the rich pay more in taxes?" "should we decrease the military budget to pay for healthcare for all/free college?" etc

No Dem/Rep, Red/Blue, Left/Right. Just, what do you think your taxes should be paying for/is money in politics a corrupting force/what can we do about all this?

Maybe I'll have to take the "We Are The 99%" sign from my van window and put it out in front of us to make it clear to folks.

@Mark from Queens Your approach allows people to talk to you and you need to listen so that the conversation is one that is two way. I cannot begin to tell you how many people who were self described conservatives, once given the chance to state their views, were more than willing to engage with us.

I am of the firm belief that we must be open and not pre-judge if we want people to accept our views. I hope you (and others like you) will act upon your idea.

Thank you and again and have a wonderful day!

the Democrats are asking Mr. go fuck yourself, Rahm Emanuel, for strategy advice.

Democrats Are Turning to the Absolute Worst Person for Help Winning the 2018 Election

In a break from recent tradition, the Democrats are planning to widely expand the number of districts they plan to contest in the 2018 midterm elections. But, in a sign that not every tried-and-true Democratic instinct is being thrown out, they’re planning on dumpster diving for help doing it, with Politico reporting that three House Democrats involved in mapping out the party’s strategy to win in 2018 are going to make a pilgrimage to Chicago to seek out the advice of none other than Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Too greedy and too stupid to live.

Sorry, good morning Mark and 99ers...

They can't change sides now, so they will double down. There will be no compromises with the Dem power structure and their stooges.

If we are to use that Party to run candidates, we must stage a coup or figure out how to bypass the power structure in the election process. I don't see how to do either - they own the whole thing. What happened in sanders campaign is template for their reaction to progressive candidates.

The idea of using C99 and other sites to post a platform and candidate scorecard is something,at least. I noted your comments on pl & 6pak. Don't know how fast things work here, but if the idea is not supported by c99 brass, it's dead.

My guess is that JtC & the others are not enthusiastic, or he would have commented directly. Next.

@irishking Things don't work quickly for a variety of reasons: mainly that we're in a shitty position, we're being blitzed every day by misinformation and lies, and we're all practically traumatized by how bad things have gotten.

There's a lesson I learned during Occupy that I need to keep in mind: don't discuss and wait for everyone to agree before taking action. Take action, and if people don't agree, either the action will fizzle or you can deal with the disagreements after there's something real to disagree about.

As for JtC et al, I know them, and authoritarianism isn't really their thing. Which is not to say that this website is a democracy; IMO, "website democracy" is impossible in a cyberworld so rife with trolls, shills, sockpuppets and managed opposition.

Nevertheless, I'm also interested in what suggestions for action you've noticed that you think the management doesn't like?

Perhaps it would be good to write an essay simply summarizing the ideas we've had so far. Like minutes.

Does "nonpartisan" mean not allied with any party, like GOS?

Or does that also, for example, exclude endorsement of a platform and information as to candidates who agree, regardless of party?

Seems like that is being excluded. If so, no problem.

in the sense that the site itself will not officially back any particular party or candidate. Members are free to advocate as they will.

Case in point: Bernie Sanders. Myself, all the admins, moderators and the vast majority of the members supported Bernie. Yet, we as a site, took no official stance.

You may advocate for any candidate or platform that you wish, but the site itself wont. We consider the site as an advocate for the 99%.

Have had breakfast with the Boy, been to the park to see the "ruff-ruffs" and went on the swings and slide. Slightly cool here but with an undercurrent of heat. Asthma and allergies wreaking havoc lately.

Surprised how many people braved such a raw and rainy day and night to come out last night. The new Williamsburg Bridge has been completed and in use now for about a month or so. An accident on the way in last night forced me to listen to preemptive BBC coverage on NPR (the only station with talk/conversation because WBAI was playing music, AM "talk radio" doesn't count because it's non-stop manufactured fear, advertising and carefully crafted mainstream bs) of the Manchester bombing.

I don't object to some on-the-ground reporting about such a horrific tragedy, but I think non-stop, play by play of every bit just feeds the hysteria. And instead of getting clear-eyed answers and a reasoned response it just unnecessarily pumps more fear into the populace, who ultimately get corralled by devious politicians exploiting it for their own use.

Enjoy your day, C99 family.

My internet is still iffy, but currently functioning.

Living in deep red Alabama means dealing with many folks who are misled. However there are many (maybe most) people here who recognize the world and country are in a mess. The media is such a disappointment in helping citizens understand solutions. For example T-rump was in repressive Saudi Arabia talking about how bad Iran is right after they had an election where women can vote and the population elected a moderate...and not a word of objection or calls of liar liar or hypocrisy by the media. They want an Iranian war...it would be as good for ratings as T-rump. Yes we're in a mess. The corporate coup is complete and the media are largely responsible.

US-led air strikes on Syria killed a total of 225 civilians over the past month, a monitor said on Tuesday, the highest 30-day toll since the campaign began in 2014.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the civilian dead between April 23 and May 23 included 44 children and 36 women.

The US-led air campaign against the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria began on September 23, 2014.

"The past month of operations is the highest civilian toll since the coalition began bombing Syria," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

"There has been a very big escalation."

The previous deadliest 30-day period was between February 23 and March 23 this year, when 220 civilians were killed, Abdel Rahman said.

The past month's deaths brought the overall civilian toll from the coalition campaign to 1,481, among them 319 children, the Britain-based monitoring group said.

Coalition bombing raids between April 23 and May 23 also killed 122 IS jihadists and eight fighters loyal to the Syrian government, the Observatory said.
