"I Aim to Misbehave.", Mal.
I just sent this message to: LopezM@osbeels.org at the Oregon Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying.
My name is Dr. Robert I. Price:
I just read a disturbing article:
'I feel violated': Engineer who pointed out traffic signals flaw fined for 'unlicensed engineering'
Is this article accurate? Please, say this is a joke.
I am concerned because I use that term to describe some aspects of what I do as a physicist. I will use that designation, for example, when I write letters to the editor or present results of some of my work at meetings. I use that term because much of my work involves engineering rather than physics or the more generic designation "science".
To be clear, I will never represent myself as a licensed engineer because I am not a licensed engineer, and to do so would be fraud.
I would appreciate (y)our (or your designated surrogate's) response before I relocate to Oregon in the next few weeks.
What's more, the Act restricts the use of the word "engineer" to those in the state who are professionally licensed engineers, a limitation also challenged in the complaint.
RIP

Looks like overreach, by way of comparison
CPA - accountant with a particular license
PA - accountant with a different license
Accountant - somebody doing accounting who is not one of the above and not holding themselves out to be one of the above.
How would tech companies advertise in Oregon? "We are looking for a software Enginoogler"?
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
My brother is a "Testing Technician"
He has saved his company millions of dollars because he is one of the best engineers on staff, go figure.
speaking as someone with an actual degree in actual
engineering, it was always clear that the PE -- "Professional Engineer" -- was a certification comparable to CPA, which allowed one to entrepreneurially sell one's services to the general public as an engineer. the notion that every non-PE in Oregon who ever said to someone, "yeah, i'm an electrical engineer, and this looks wrong," was breaking the law is bizarre.

The state is trying to CYA
They don't want to pay back years of fraudulant fines.
Can we use the same framing for "Representative "?

Free speech is not free speech, black is white
A nationwide attack of free speech is being mounted by the so-called left (liberals/neoliberals) and the right (most establishment republicans) and other assorted Fascists. The recent violent outburst at UC Berkley against Milo Yiannopolis is one recent glaring example, such as perpetrated by the Snowflake Liberals and the Anti-Fa who are actually Fascist in their violent actions against others' free speech rights.
Perhaps the gentleman who used science (gasp) consisting of mainly mathematics should be considered guilty of performing unlicensed mathematics. What difference is there in a title? What counts is quality and reliability. Professional organizations and licensing bodies are notorious for preferential treatment of its subjects, regardless of their ability to perform their alleged specialty. In the case of medicine, I have known physicians who couldn't diagnose their way out of a paper bag.
One recurring issue, not quite related to this issue regards online freedom of speech:
