Trump threatens to withdraw from NAFTA

It's not a done deal. It's probably a negotiating tactic, but it's something no Democratic president would ever do. Trump could forever turn the Rust Belt red with this.

The Trump administration is weighing an executive order on withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), according to multiple media reports.

Administration officials who spoke to CNN cautioned that the order is not finalized and changes could still be made as aides offer input.

If the administration follows through with the order, it could signal its intent to begin the process of the pulling out of the major trade pact with Canada and Mexico.

Politico first reported the order is being considered.

President Trump would not necessarily need an executive order to withdraw from the trade agreement. Under NAFTA, any parties are allowed to leave six months after providing written notice to the other countries.

Goodbye Blue Wall forever.
Democrats will either reform or die now.
TPP and TTIP are still dead as well.

I only have a few animals, and I don't depend on them to live, but a friend asked me that once. Pretty funny. If I'm sick I get up and stagger out to haul hay and whatever else needs hauling around, whether I feel like it or not. Sleeting or snowing or pouring rain or mud sucking my boots off. You are responsible for them not starving or getting dehydrated or not getting pneumonia or for new lambs or fish not dying. Bronchitis or not. If you're really feeling feeble, you don't carry things, you drag them, slowly.

When I broke my arm (bad break & long use restriction), it was a deep-snow winter and I couldn't afford to have my driveway plowed, so I dragged hay bales and feed bags a quarter of a mile in, one-armed. It's what you do, raising animals. Maybe I "should have" gotten rid of them? I still don't think so. And it's nothing, compared to what farmers do all the time.

The conservative House Freedom Caucus that helped derail the GOP’s effort last month to repeal Obamacare has formally endorsed a revised measure, potentiality giving it a new lease on life.

“While the revised version still does not fully repeal Obamacare, we are prepared to support it to keep our promise to the American people to lower health-care costs,” the group said in a statement. “We look forward to working with our Senate colleagues to improve the bill.”

The endorsement could help build support for a new vote as early as next week, but Representative Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, a leading Republican centrist, says that he believes most moderates remain opposed. He called the new version an effort at “blame-shifting” for the failure of the repeal effort.

House Republicans have been under intense pressure to deliver on years of promises to repeal Obamacare, but GOP leaders weren’t making predictions of an imminent vote, despite renewed pressure from the White House as President Donald Trump approaches his 100th day in office on Saturday.

Even if it makes it through the House, it's DOA in the Senate.

As CNBC puts it, Cohn will push “more moderate, business-friendly economic policies.” The Washington Post says Cohn is advocating “a centrist vision.” The Post goes on to describe “The growing strength of Cohn and like-minded moderates” as revealed in Trump’s endorsement of government subsidies for exports, and of corporate tax cuts. Says the Post: “The president’s new positions move him much closer to the views of … mainstream Republicans and Democrats.”

Ultimately, what will replace NAFTA I think is perhaps the more important issue than merely the repeal of NAFTA.

NAFTA has done damage, yes, but are we going to get something under a different name that is also damaging?
