New spider species discovered in Baja
OK, I will not include any spidey pictures here but ...
This is based on a picture and film containing article here:

The article is titled: Baseball-sized spider discovered in Baja California mine.
Everybody got that? If you're arachnophobic, take a pass on the linked article
It appears that scientists from the San Diego Museum of Natural History (a pretty cool museum, btw) were poking around in a mine shaft in Baja California when they came across one big motha spider. It turns out to be a new genus and species, henceforth to be known as Califorctenus cacahilensis. It is big, long legged and has a yellow abdomen. It is also mildly venomous. The bite, however, is described as not all that painful, so don't let it bug you..

"Big motha" is an entomological term of art, or of
affection, I forget which.

Doesn't it? Reminds me vaguely of Wolf Spiders.

@thanatokephaloides
It does! All cute and fuzzy in a pic - although you'd never get me off the roof if one that big showed up in the house, lol.
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
best thing I have read in days.
Long live the creatures of this earth.

We grow them BIG now!
I am getting haunts of PTSD. Someone shot in a very public area downtown. Witnesses were named. And the online article chided for naming witnesses. My name was published multiple times in the local newspaper as a material witness in a family mass-murder trial. I witnessed on TV, in court. And perp had already been killed by police. Unfortunate trial, I think all lawyers including DA are dead now. Tempus fugit.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Reminds me of the FL banana spiders. They were large
sometimes bigger than a saucer. They hung out in small trees and spun yuge webs. Now they liked the sun, but you had to watch out for the webs. They weren't noted for being venomous, they just scared the crap out of you when you discovered one. Haven't seen any lately but I live in an urban area that they would avoid. Rec'd!!

Thanks
the post and the picture of the spider made my day.
Its a lot more pleasant than thinking about tribes of humans all slaughtering one another all over the globe. I imagine such cave dwellers will be in a position to best survive the climate change, or nuclear war holocaust that somehow we have not been able to prevent the march towards.
Long live spiders!
