The real gem in the latest Wikileaks release

The news that the CIA can break into Signal and WhatsApp is big news, but possibly the biggest item was intentionally buried in this NY Times article. To quote Wikileaks:

UMBRAGE

The CIA's hand crafted hacking techniques pose a problem for the agency. Each technique it has created forms a "fingerprint" that can be used by forensic investigators to attribute multiple different attacks to the same entity.
...
The CIA's Remote Devices Branch's UMBRAGE group collects and maintains a substantial library of attack techniques 'stolen' from malware produced in other states including the Russian Federation.

With UMBRAGE and related projects the CIA cannot only increase its total number of attack types but also misdirect attribution by leaving behind the "fingerprints" of the groups that the attack techniques were stolen from.

Does that mean what it sounds like it means? Yes it does.

Looking back to an Intercept article from late December:

CrowdStrike, whose claims of Russian responsibility are perhaps most influential throughout the media, says APT 28/Fancy Bear “is known for its technique of registering domains that closely resemble domains of legitimate organizations they plan to target.” But this isn’t a Russian technique any more than using a computer is a Russian technique — misspelled domains are a cornerstone of phishing attacks all over the world. Is Yandex — the Russian equivalent of Google — some sort of giveaway? Anyone who claimed a hacker must be a CIA agent because they used a Gmail account would be laughed off the internet. We must also acknowledge that just because Guccifer 2.0 pretended to be Romanian, we can’t conclude he works for the Russian government — it just makes him a liar.
...
It must be stated plainly: The U.S. intelligence community must make its evidence against Russia public if they want us to believe their claims. The integrity of our presidential elections is vital to the country’s survival; blind trust in the CIA is not.

Hmmm. Maybe that evidence would be self-incriminating.

At this point in time, evidence is irrelevant.

All you need is confirmation bias, heavy doses of propaganda, and your own arrogance to believe you see things clearly.

"Wikileaks is Putin's agent
Russia is evil
How come the left is so easy to propagandize by the Russians?"

Every new piece of evidence that goes against a confirmed belief requires the individual to double down on the belief, otherwise they would be forced to admit they were wrong. It's easier to see yourself as the good guys and others as naive children or evil doers.

@gjohnsit I mean I am agreeing with you and generally have fallen on the side of being critical of our intelligence agencies, considering their sordid history over the decades. Also, couple that with attacks against whistle blowers, they aren't something to place your bets on.

But Snowden is also another in a long line of people who are also targeted as Putin/Kremlin agents. Boom done bam. No need to actually look at what they are saying. Just instant dismissal and protecting the cozy space inside your head that confirms your biases and beliefs.

behind the hacking or not.

What is very important--and very ominous--to me: That the government and the media labeled showing Americans undoctored emails "hacking an election" and so many repeated, and continue to repeat that very dangerous lie. Providing true information about a Presidential primary is hacking an election now? Good God!

Then again, don't mind me. Marching to a slightly different drummer and all.

@HenryAWallace Further, we do not know if the DNC emails were even "hacked." According to Assange, the DNC emails that Wikileaks published were not from a hack, but were provided to them by an insider, whom many people believe to be Seth Rich. Assange emphasized that the DNC leaks did NOT come from a state entity. The use of the term "hacks" to describe the emails is totally bogus and I really wish we here would not use it, but instead use the term "leaked emails."

All this emphasis on Russia being the source of the leaks has not been verified one time, but is only conjecture because it supports the narrative that the Democrats and their neoconservative allies wish to construct. It also diverts the public attention away from the real issue which is the DNC and the Clinton campaign conspired to rig the primaries. Regardless of whom they voted for, every American should be incensed over this one fact. That alone totally invalidates our election system.

That they made Brazile acting head was such a slap in the face to Bernie and his supporters. Same for replacing Brazile with Perez.

BTW, how is the Seth Rich murder investigation going? We never heard a thing after hearing about his murder. Even if you accept that he was murdered in connection with a robbery gone wrong, it was still a murder. Where's the murder investigation?

In my town, law enforcement has cameras every couple of blocks. What are the odds that my town has cameras on the streets and Washington, D.C. does not? How many people were out at 4 am?

However, again, for me, all the details pale in comparison to equate revealing truth about a primary with hacking a general election. It's one thing for the Obama administration and Hillary to attempt that level of bs. It's another for media to help them spread that and for so many others to repeat it mindlessly. Mind boggling, and with profound implications for the future.

@HenryAWallace A very important point that has been bothering me a lot too.

Honestly, if Russian spies want to do opposition research on American political figures and reveal the results to the American public--and then essentially sign their names to the effort, so everybody knows it was them--I'm not sure why I was ever afraid of them.

Perhaps they can replace our press.

Yup, this is the big news in this leak. Any pointing of fingers coming out of the U.S.'s intelligence community must be regarded henceforth as almost certainly misdirection.

@Steven D the article I referred to above:

Many of these documents are classified and contain even the identities of CIA's personnel, which WikiLeaks has not published but it has rather redacted. According to the organisation, these files have been available in “an isolated, high-security network situated inside the Cia's Center for Cyber Intelligence in Langley, Virginia”, but recently the Cia “lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal”: this archive “appears to have been circulated among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive”.

@gjohnsit if anyone is being held accountable? Obviously, if there is a group of people involved in security breakdowns, gross incompetence or plain and simple theft of the archive, we will never be told about what happened to them by our government. Maybe wikileaks knows but they seem determined at this point not to name names, obviously to protect their source.

Recently, the CIA lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal including malware, viruses, trojans, weaponized "zero day" exploits, malware remote control systems and associated documentation. This extraordinary collection, which amounts to more than several hundred million lines of code, gives its possessor the entire hacking capacity of the CIA. The archive appears to have been circulated among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive.

@Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal

Actually, I find the code loss more terrifying. Even hundreds of rogue operatives could probably be traced, although actually the CIA appears to be dangerously rogue on its own, so their losing control over operatives might not necessarily be a bad thing, depending.

But all of this malware and the back-door keys floating freely around could be used by any number of people to do anything from setting off nuclear systems/shitting down power or other essential stations (think Stuxnet) to stealing everyone's ID to shutting down everyone's computers - you name it. This scares me a LOT more, because these millions of lines of code can be used against us (the people of the world) for any purpose by anyone of how many having/eventually gaining access? Millions, conceivably...

A bot-net operator apparently, having made a fortune and recently retiring, was claiming to be releasing what they'd used free, for anyone else to do whatever the heck they were doing in using other people's devices and fouling up millions of people to some degree or another... now this?

National Security, like democracy, human rights and the US Constitution, is evidently regarded as just another buzzword to be used against the public only, by apparently just about everyone in the corrupt US government and its various branches, agencies and public/private nightmares...

Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal's picture

@Ellen North Of course you're right and the loss of the code is more potentially destructive. But not more shocking. I'm not as surprised that the CIA lost control of a lot of software--they spread it around so much, to so many people. But if a bunch of hackers withdrew their loyalty/support from the CIA all at once, that would shock me.

Lol, part of the information-sharing among spy networks/private companies which Obama OKed?

Or was some of this released in order to have plausible deniability, since this absurd fabrication - RUSSIAN!!! hacked elections!!! Hacked emails!!! which were already-known as insider-leaked/judicially released emails - had already been pretty much traced back to the CIA due to their bizarre 'signature' claims?

@dkmich she's great, not easy to listen to, not "fun," but I agree with her. Don Mikulecky wrote a diary the other day remarking how climate change and the denial of it seem part of the same disease infecting our politics and economics. I agree. Most people don't want to hear the truth of how bad things really are as it is overwhelming. I don't know what to do except not watch any MSM, very little TV (dumb comedy only now and maybe a movie), and don't consume any more than necessary. I'm good there, have no desire to shop any more at all. As for protests I have not joined any so far. My own revulsion for Repugnants makes me happy to see some of it, but I know it's not real and not addressing the underlying reasons.

Scary thing on Amazon, I did not really think about the implications to that before now, nor did I realize Bezos is building a data base for the CIA. I use my Kindle all the time and download a lot of non fiction political and economic. I know there's no escaping it but my God, makes me want to live off the grid completely now more than ever.
