Good evening and welcome all to Friday's photography open thread.

I'd hang around but my guests probably wouldn't appreciate it, so enjoy yourselves, yourselves!

I think you’ve always understood … that you’re against the next war ; ).

Nice, that you get to celebrate with your loving wife and friend, who can also bake you a cake!

The inside out photos are quite literal, in reality. But I'm sure it didn't take you long to see that.

Since my wife Teri`s business is called "Editing Fairy" I then added to the little brass dancing fairy, by adding wings. These are from the yard surrounding the house.

Teri is not only a lover, wife & friend, she is also the chef who is now baking my today`s birthday cake.

Knucklehead's picture

@Bollox Ref Oh no,
I see how my comment reflects that. I found the fairy in a box of my junk & decided to polish it up & make a little wooden base for it, with the intent of adding some sort of wings later.
Later came sooner than I thought when I found a bunch of feathers from a bird kill at one of my job sites & a dead butterfly near my place. I just put the rest together to finish my little gift to Teri.

I like the contrasting themes of your photos.
I spent a few days in Las Vegas recently. It rained 3 of the 4 days I was there but I did get in a few night shots while I was there.

You'd hardly know the difference between inside and out in your Las Vegas photos if it weren't for the wet ground. Beside the colour, I was fascinated by the people in your photos looking at their devices.

Just want to say thank you for posting this every week. It is a highlight for me. We Berners here won the only county in CA for Bernie. Then we started a local campaign and won two progressive city council seats. And now there is frump. Our town is ~30% Hispanic per the census. Then there are all the udoocs. Lots a lots. Now the farmers, who were all for them going are wondering who is going to do the work.

And today ice just started gathering people up in so ca and in austin and I don't know where else. I am at a loss for words.

All of you.

I really like that first photo a lot Janis. I couldn't make out the trick of the light at first. Then the context became clear. Transportative, magical. Fantastic compliment, the two are to each other.

Those are really wonderful shots on the beach, magiamma. Great eye.

Just wanted to say that although I don't often comment I usually do peek in. And I must say, that some of the images have left indelible impressions in me.

And Happy Bday, knucklehead! I remember a photo you posted of some woodwork you did, within the framing of a house I believe, that was mind-blowing.

These are from last Saturday. I liked how the clouds were; these were at Decker Lake, looking west toward the Oquirrh range:

First we went to Lee Kay Ponds, which were still mostly frozen over and there wasn't a lot to see.

We have blue herons here year-round. I thought for sure it would be too cold for them to stay, but apparently they do! We also have black-crowned night herons that stay all year, but I haven't seen any of those yet.
I'm still looking for hooded mergansers. It's been really warm here though and the ice there had melted a couple days later, and there were 11 hooded mergansers there, according to eBird. FML! Maybe tomorrow we'll have some time to go again.

These are from Decker Lake:

American wigeons; another life bird!

I saw this kestrel land up on that utility pole and thought ooh, what's that? I zoomed in with my camera but couldn't make out colors as the sun was reflecting off the screen, so it wasn't until I got home and looked at it on the computer that I could identify it as an American kestrel.

That smaller goose with the stubby bill toward the upper-right is a cackling goose. There's also a ruddy duck there, which I only learned recently that they change colors for the winter.

I'm having severe script problems (and it's so late), instead of posting a photo of a show Springer, thought I'd post a photo that I found on Twitter late last week.

(Obviously) It's of a bank sign in our old stomping grounds in Interior Alaska. We still miss that place tremendously, including the arctic weather!

Smile

Denali State Bank Sign.png

'Chena' was the name of our first Springer--an Alaskan Sourdough--who lived to the ripe old age of 17-1/2 years. She was born in a subdivision just off the road referenced in the above photo byline.

You must have definitely had to stomp through the pile of snow that covered the ground. That's definitely not for me ; ).

freezing fog, or ice fog. IIRC, ice fog forms mostly when the humidity is at, or near 100%, and the temps drop well below zero.

Here's a fun video from the National Weather Service,

We recall doing this the first winter after we arrived in Alaska. Guess this is sort of a rite of initiation to the Arctic.

BTW, both of your photos were really interesting. Last night, I have such a script problem, that I (uncharacteristically) made my comments as concise as possible.

Wink

Have a great rest of the weekend!

I still had that problem--now, it's dodging the extreme heat and humidity when I walk 'the B.'

Biggrin

Seriously, we were there in the 80's and 90's, and all of our dogs wore decent coats in the winter; however, we gave up on doggie boots, pretty early on. Since there were times that their paws 'froze up,' we had to shorten the walks, walking them more often.

It really wasn't an uncomfortable cold (to me), since the Interior is quite dry, humidity-wise. If anything, the greatest potential harm was underestimating the cold, since it often felt relatively comfortable--even at dangerous temperatures.

Hey, have a great day!

Mollie
