Yesterday's down time was due to network problems with our hosting supplier. Sorry about any inconvenience folks, it was beyond my control, all I could do was wait for the train along with everyone else.
It's a good break from the madness in the world. As chaos creeps closer, however, we'll need c99p more than ever!
Let's keep up the donations, folks. I increased my donation for the new year from $10 to $15/ mo. For me, it's a small price to pay for such a glorious fake news blog. I support the depravity of our members!

"The “jumpers” reminded us that one day we will all face only one choice and that is how we will die, not how we will live." Chris Hedges on 9/11
I tried to send this as the network problems were just starting to manifest.
I had just noticed that I missed a reply to one of my comments. I use a rather dodgy scrolling trick to track same, and often lose the parent / child connection.
I am wondering how difficult it would be to delineate comment dependencies using something like vertical lines. I have no realistic suggestions as I am not conversant with "high level" languages and graphical interfaces.
since I built the site, to no avail. One solution would be to switch to the Disqus commenting system, but personally I don't like Disqus at all.
What I do when I need to know the parent of a comment is position the mouse cursor to the far left of the line above it, and then scroll up until it comes to the parent.
I hope to have that problem solved in a future upgrade.

That's my "dodgy solution". I am with you on the Disqus thing, I have never looked into that particular corner of code but I have found, over the decades, much in cyberspace that just doesn't work for me.
the suggestion was for the following poster to identify the previous one this way: @JtC; that would identify the poster written to (show up as a link). But it's another step for writers to add the name.
And great thanks to you for your work!
I get one from my phone company when things fall apart for >12 hrs.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
It would be a credit for a representative downtime percentage for the monthly server bill applied towards next months billing....
In other words, not a lot...
But playing pissed off customer hardball may yield up to a free month...

Bluehost and a number of their hosting companies went down which isn't unusual with this crappy hosting provider, usually it's only their throttling of their "Unlimited Bandwidth" which is "Unlimited As Long As They Slowly Give It To You" that is the problem.
Bluehost was a very decent hosting company before they were bought out by EIG and the Data Center was migrated to EIG's shitty data center...
It is amusing to look at the responses the various EIG companies gave on their blogs, forums, Twitter, and FaceBook about what the problem was and what they were doing to resolve it. It was almost like they had a bunch of Hillbots and David Brock Correcting The Record...
Have you been looking at other hosting companies?

Every year or 2 they have a sustained outage like this...
I think their last doozy was during the Data Center Migration where they had a lot of users lose SQL for several days...

who really wants to know who we are dependent on, it's so painful to realize it. Let's just ignore those dependencies and pretend we are all free at last and say whatever, to whoever, whenever we want, like it was supposed to be on C99p.
Do I sound like a Libertarian now? Some day I make it there and talk like a neo-con. If I just were a bit more persistant and more hard working... I could arrive there.
A small favor, if you would, please list my favorite station on your blogroll. KXCI plays Democracy Now! every Mon - Fri at noon AZ time in addition to some truly outstanding music programming. I recommend Kidd Squidd's Mystery Jukebox on Saturday followed by Marty Kool's Blues Review. I'm a big fan of Sabor del Barrio and Chicano Connection on Wednesday nights. There's a Bluegrass show on now.

back when I played I would segue from it into Danville Girl and then to Wabash Cannonball, which can make a tiny bit of sense if you think of the last verse of Wabash Cannonball in the context of waiting for a train.

Thanks for the correction . . .
I am one of those FM guys that heard and played the Brewer & Shipley cover not aware of the original back in the day.
It wasn't exactly a hit record,
but I used to hear it all the time on what used to be called "underground" FM, if you remember those days.
