It's semi-official. Trump to name a second racist to a top U.S. post.

It's breaking now that President-elect Trump (you think it's hard to type that, how about President Trump?) will nominate Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III as the United States of America's next Attorney General. The office that was held by giants like Robert F. Kennedy and Elliot Richardson (who resigned when ordered to fire Archibald Cox, Watergate special prosecutor) is now in the hands of Jeff Sessions.

Ol' Jeff. In the 1980s, his nomination as a federal district judge couldn't get past the Senate. In America 2016? He's the Attorney General. The top lawman of the nation. As the great Lilly Tomlin said "It's gonna get worse, before it gets worse."

Trump has made a clear declaration. As if Steve Bannon wasn't enough, this removes any suggestion that racist beliefs will be a disqualifier in the Trump Administration. Same for xenophobia, homophobia, bellicosity, etc, etc, etc. Thanks Hillary.

FDR came from old money. Some considered him to be a class traitor.
Trump does not have to make these choices.
He does not have Clinton's binding political and financial obligations to the elites.

It looks like Trump will make those ties now. He doesn't have to do it- it is his choice.
That's on him, in my opinion.

Beware the bullshit factories.

When has a Republican ever taken ownership of any catastrophe they cause? Stealing the meme from the post about the Democrats not taking responsibility for their horrible electoral performance in recent years, the Republicans never admit to their actions ever harming ANYONE.

It will be thus with Hair Drumpf.

He thinks the worse they are , it's all for the better. His logic is it is easier to condemn policies when they are pushed by horrible people. He says Obama with his cute smile and eloquent speeches has put liberals to sleep, thus he got away with some awful crap and little pushback.

The Show is here. This one is about the Steve Bannon pick, but the logic applies to Sessions.

is that he's no fan of Hillary.

Bill pressured Sessions to resign and eventually ended up firing him in 1993 - 5 1/2 years into his ten year FBI Director term - making him the only Director so far (cough, Comey, cough) to suffer that fate.

Old Hill better watch her P's & Q's. Old Dixiecrats never forget a grudge, and if there was ever a pitbull tugging at his chain, it's Sessions.

As far as the rest of course, not good. Not good at all.

Lyndon Johnson was a racist. The difference of course was that Lyndon Johnson pushed through the 1964 Civil Rights Act whereas we in our current anti-racist moral superiority tolerate a situation in which school segregation, for instance, is "worse than it was in the '60s." Why? We spend too much time scouring our souls and the souls of others for racist tendencies, and not enough time looking at policy. In this regard we might be better off protesting a racist than we would be if we were to champion nice anti-racists whose policies were lousy.

“When there's no fight over programme, the election becomes a casting exercise. Trump's win is the unstoppable consequence of this situation.” - Jean-Luc Melanchon

It's a consequence of the brand of identity politics that have given us our current situation. You should write an essay expounding on this topic. Identity and how it relates to our political discourse is important to me (I grew up in impoverished areas where whites were a minority, and it has deeply influenced me to this day), and I would appreciate having other voices highlight these issues as well, so from at least one individual's perspective your time wouldn't be wasted!

sounds good to me

What he seems to have carried from a boyhood in a blue-collar, union and Democratic family in Norfolk, Va., and through his tour of the American establishment, is an unreconstructed sense of class awareness, or bitterness — or betrayal. The Democratic Party betrayed its working-man roots, just as Hillary Clinton betrayed the long-time Clinton connection — Bill Clinton’s connection — to the working man. “The Clinton strength,” he says, “was to play to people without a college education. High school people. That’s how you win elections.” And, likewise, the Republican party would come to betray its working-man constituency forged under Reagan. In sum, the working man was betrayed by the establishment, or what he dismisses as the “donor class.”

He absolutely — mockingly — rejects the idea that this is a racial line. “I’m not a white nationalist, I’m a nationalist. I’m an economic nationalist,” he tells me. “The globalists gutted the American working class and created a middle class in Asia. The issue now is about Americans looking to not get f—ed over. If we deliver—” by "we" he means the Trump White House "—we’ll get 60 percent of the white vote, and 40 percent of the black and Hispanic vote and we’ll govern for 50 years. That’s what the Democrats missed, they were talking to these people with companies with a $9 billion market cap employing nine people. It’s not reality. They lost sight of what the world is about.”

In a nascent administration that seems, at best, random in its beliefs, Bannon can seem to be not just a focused voice, but almost a messianic one:

“Like [Andrew] Jackson’s populism, we’re going to build an entirely new political movement,” he says. “It’s everything related to jobs. The conservatives are going to go crazy. I’m the guy pushing a trillion-dollar infrastructure plan. With negative interest rates throughout the world, it’s the greatest opportunity to rebuild everything. Ship yards, iron works, get them all jacked up. We’re just going to throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks. It will be as exciting as the 1930s, greater than the Reagan revolution — conservatives, plus populists, in an economic nationalist movement.”

Pluto's Republic's picture

…no matter how hard the Establishment tries to push it in. I had to listen to his speeches. It's easy to see why the Elite are so threatened by Trump.

Says Bannon, from that same article:

"He gets it; he gets it intuitively," says Bannon, perhaps still surprised he has found such an ideal vessel. "You have probably the greatest orator since William Jennings Bryan, coupled with an economic populist message and two political parties that are so owned by the donors that they don't speak to their audience.

But he speaks in a non-political vernacular, he communicates with these people in a very visceral way. Nobody in the Democratic party listened to his speeches, so they had no idea he was delivering such a compelling and powerful economic message.

He shows up 3.5 hours late in Michigan at 1 in the morning and has 35,000 people waiting in the cold. When they got [Clinton] off the donor circuit she went to Temple University and they drew 300 or 400 kids."

These days it takes more than scaring Americans to death with smears and propaganda to win an election. It might require — god forbid — real economic nuts and bolts and self-investment that enriches "everyman."
