Jimmy Dore: On Chuck Schumer, The Death Of The Dem Party, And WTF Bernie

Jimmy gets a tad excited on this one (warning: generous use of the F-Bomb). He talks about: What the Dems learned from the election (hint: Effing Nothing!!); Dems picking Wall Street Whore Chuck Schumer to lead the Senate Dems; And gets on Bernie's case for going along with the whole charade.

Dem Loyalists are not gonna feel much love on this one. Biggrin

Chuck Schumer: The Worst Possible Democratic Leader at the Worst Possible Time

He possesses the same impressive political acumen as Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, sagely explaining “For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.”

How did "Not me, us" turn into such stunning ascendancy?

Bernie knows so much more than all us little people.

That's the seed Bernie sought to help raise into vibrant life. As he's always said, change has to come from the people, from the base of the fertile ground which the self-appointed 'elites' (Greeds) are not content to graze upon but seek to trample into polluted muck - despite this leaving even themselves nothing to stand on, as they blindly sink into Bullshit Mountain with their eyes and ears already filled beyond any hope of contact with reality.

Of course there will attempts to propagandize the unaware away from the one person in a political position to do good for the people and with a life-long record of doing so even at great personal cost. Bernie is their worst possible nightmare.

that makes it bad to me. I even get that whole Outreach thing was probably meant as some kind of punishment - ie, you'll toe the Corporate line now and love it for what you did Bernie. It's the idea that Bernie would try to work with them and have any faith in them. I know he's more experienced than I am, blah, blah, blah. But I don't think they CAN be reformed and for some reason it appears to me that Bernie does. I can't get behind that. I cannot and will not blindly put my faith in these people when it appears they're really just trying to atone in some shallow way for the horror they've helped unleash.

Maybe I'll get over that, but I am not there yet. I wish to hell Bernie had run Green, while he might not have won I think he would have created a better chance at truly getting a viable third party. Now it just looks like he's OK with the duopoly and the way it is now, and that's not OK. All these years, we ignored the appearance of impropriety in their behavior because we really thought they were trying, and just having to play that game against the dirty Repugnant's, maybe that wasn't such a good thing to ignore. And now we really can't afford to ignore it.

"I'll work with them... " what he doesn't say is, "as long as they toe the Bernie line." I suspect he has as little faith in Chuckles et al as the rest of us here, and why he turned down "Outreach." People talk about this offer as though it was a sure thing, which it assuredly was not.

The problem was that Jill had no authority to offer the Green Party's Presidential candidate spot to Bernie or to any outsider: she apparently had some vague idea of trying to convince the rest of the Green Party to change the rules to allow this - where, going by what I've gathered of the way the Green Party functions, this would have gone over like trying to herd cats with a lead balloon.

Bernie would simply have lost all chance to keep the message of what could and should be done for the people in the public eye and mind, as he could still do while 'campaigning for Hillary' in carefully phrased messages reminding all informed listeners that Hillary might 'understand' what needed to be done but would never do it. He also mentioned that people needed to vote their consciences and that he had no problem with '3rd parties' while warning that Trump would be a disaster.

Who would know better than Bernie that no informed person could possibly vote for the Clintons?

Why is virtually nobody here, that I've seen so far, wondering how many Green votes were stolen/Green voters suppressed in this election?

Why are so many people apparently so outraged with Bernie for not being able to overcome the global monster which few other politicians dared to stand up to at all, all on his own, and for using strategy to work his way into a position where he could potentially still do good for the people, that they would toss aside all good he would fight for and likely have more success in achieving than anyone else would think possible, as he has done throughout his life, in order to further strengthen their billionaire/corporate/self-serving enemies? This amounts to self-sabotage all too typical, as has been repeatedly evident, of the Left...

Edited to remove a redundant word and to replace a typo-ed letter.

Bernie specified that for a winning Presidential candidate to imprison the losing Presidential candidate because of a difference in opinion would be the stuff of which dictatorships are made and I absolutely agree with this.

However, he did not say that she should be pardoned and get off scott-free for any and all crimes she might be found guilty of having committed. Bernie is a master at avoiding answering stupid and impolitic questions in any manner likely to cause pointless repercussions - and the fact remains that issuing a blanket 'pardon' for someone politically powerful and known to be a criminal who has so far evaded trial is also a sign of dictatorship/oligarchy.

From Chaddwicker's USA Today link:

The Vermont independent will be the chair of “outreach” for Senate Democrats next Congress, Senate Democratic Leader-elect Chuck Schumer of New York announced Wednesday. He will be the first independent to hold a party leadership position since the modern leadership structure began in the early 20th Century, according to the Senate Historical Office.

“Real change doesn’t take place on Capitol Hill," Sanders said in a statement. "It takes place in grassroots America. It takes place when millions of working people, young people and senior citizens come together to demand that our government works for all of us and not just the 1 percent. When the people lead, the leaders follow."

End of cut from Chaddwicker's USA Today linkSeems a little odd that a guy who recently 'joined' the Democratic Party is now their head recruiter.

But this is disappointing - even more than his surrender to Clinton at the Convention:

“Real change doesn’t take place on Capitol Hill," Sanders said in a statement. "It takes place in grassroots America. It takes place when millions of working people, young people and senior citizens come together to demand that our government works for all of us and not just the 1 percent. When the people lead, the leaders follow."

I don't disagree with the gist of his argument, but real change does also require leaders. Bernie exercised leadership during the primary campaign - and then (rather too dutifully?) surrendered it. He seems now somewhat ambivalent: on one day he makes a fiery speech that promises opposition to Trump; the next day this?

Perhaps he simply judges - rightly or wrongly - that there is not quite enough support in the country for the kind of radicalism he might himself prefer. So lets build support. Let's make demands, instead of blaming Bernie for not being The One.

up

Actually, Bernie took the only 'out' which enabled him to avoid conceding to Hillary or releasing his delegates to Hillary at the Coronation. Now, he's still in a position to fight for the people's rights, as he would not have been, had he pointlessly spit defiance at the corporate Dems and their paymasters to be cheated also out of the General Election.

Bernie's been doing this a long time and he hasn't survived by not learning strategies which enable him to 'live to fight another day' and potentially achieve some good for at least some of the most vulnerable of the people which others apparently thought could not be done.

everybody who'd put everything and the kitchen sink into supporting her looked like the assholes they are. They spent all their credibility and gained nothing. Their only hope for credibility is Bernie, and it looks like he's gonna try to give it to him.

I don't think Bernie can fix it, though. Only Trump and the Republicans can rehabilitate the Democratic image--by being HUUGE shitheads for the next 2-4 years. Republican perfidy is like a paddle which will knock Americans, like a ping-pong ball, back to the Democratic side of the table. At least, that's how it's been working for the past 15-20 years.

It is just possible that they've gone too far this time. I think they sense that, and that's why they're continuing to parade Bernie in front of us.

Bernie plans on firing up and organizing the people to pressure politicians into doing the right things, which is probably not what the corporate Dems anticipated. Bernie has never been a blind Party person and he's no longer listed as a Dem at all, having gone back to Indie, so recruiting for the Dems won't be the goal, just chasing them into line with what small-d democratic politicians are supposed to be working toward - the public interest.

[...] to the enormous political power of the financial lobby. It’s a shift that has even affected our language, our civic life, and our way of relating to one another. We speak about human or social “capital” and securitize everything from education to critical infrastructure to prison terms, a mark of our burgeoning “portfolio society.”

This isn’t the way it was supposed to be. Market capitalism, as envisioned by Adam Smith, was supposed to funnel our collective savings into productive investment, via the banking system. I've said in comments a few times now that I believe greed to be a mental illness, and these language and attitudes examples of the disease of financialization creeping into our daily lives are evidence of that contagion. There might once have been hope for a cure. But increasingly, financialization appears to have a fatal phase - and we're mired deeply in it.

stagnation with excessive unemployment and idle productive capacity. The predicted direction of this system is financialization in which profits can be generated while producing nothing of social value. This end stage of capitalism, which can persist if not stopped, fosters greed and the concentration of wealth. The global 1% owns as much wealth as the global 99%.

It's now the military/industrial/financial complex and when we realize we face a climate crisis that threatens our existence we need to somehow find our way out of the mire. It's tough when capital can command the military, political, and diplomatic resources of the largest and most powerful countries.

"Let's get together" with the very people who are grinding us into dust, then I will get over him. I have no idea if he was a Sheepdog. No proof, no wikileaks. I do not know what he was promised, I do not know if he was threatened. I just do not know.
I believed he was the politician who understood me and mine better than anyone since FDR.
Now I am seeing that understanding me and mine does not translate into anything worthwhile to help us.

if the Berners come back out to support him or not. He's back on the road sooner rather than later, likely at a venue near you. Will it be the usual 10,000, or something more like Hillary's "crowds" screaming Bernie! Bernie! My guess closer to 10,000.

is what I think he'll get if he shows his face so soon after stumping for billionaires. Who is backing this coalition with Wall Street fantasy? Maybe it is just a book tour, I can't tell the difference lately with umpteen focus groups on every issue except the ones that actually matter. Good luck to all.

should clue both Sanders and Schumer that he's lost his magic touch. I doubt his book will do as well as he hopes. "Outreach" is doomed, and he should know it.

Not going all the way with his campaign shot him in the foot. Even if he dropped out, he should have filed a lawsuit in order to start an investigation into the DNC. He could have gone independent and won, could have gone Green and won.

Instead, he not only did nothing that we wanted him to do - he went over to the dark side - the very side he and we had been criticizing for months. My donations to Bernie were a poor purchase because I got absolutely nothing for my investment.

Hope nobody minds my addressing a few points which keep turning up, since I'm doing so, lol.

The fact that Bernie walked away from "Our Revolution" should have given a hint - with people who missed such hints wondering instead why it was registered in a form giving Bernie an excuse to have nothing to do with it.

At the Coronation, standing against the power and corruption of not only the ruthless, lying, cheating Clintons, Dems, government and various agencies and the corporate media propaganda machine but international self-interests intent on global domination, Bernie took the only 'out' which allowed him to not concede to, and to not release his delegates to, Hillary. That was, no doubt, the best he could do in that situation and still remain in a position to work toward the public good in any real capacity.

Seriously, what kind of investigation does anyone think it would be possible to get from this corrupted government and its various corrupted agencies?

As Jill stated in an interview (Common Dreams, perhaps? quite a number of voters tossed over lot of polluted water under the bridge since then...) posted (if I recall correctly) somewhere in comments on a thread some time back, here on C-9, Dr. Stein did not have the authority to hand over the Green Party's Presidential candidate spot to an outsider, and her evidently unattempted/failed suggestion of trying to talk the herd-of-cats Green Party into changing the rules to allow this didn't seem likely.

Hillary certainly 'got' the phrasing Bernie used while 'campaigning for Hillary' in keeping the vision of what should be and is possible in any real democracy in the forefront of the public mind - even those who didn't 'get' that themselves should have had a hint from Hillary's expression whenever she was present in such cases.

But TPTB and their lackeys have a deep and abiding interest in propagating division among the left, as with other population groups, and Bernie represents the rare hazard of a politician actually defending the concept of democracy and of government working for the public interest it exists to serve and, even worse, one who realizes the importance of citizen activism and of those within the community and truly of, by and for the people running for public office, making him their worst nightmare personified.

But having the Left reject the help of this rarity would help TPTB and their corporate/converted 'Left' media, paid trolls and other lackeys rest so much more easily on the mounded heaps of money drained from the rest of the country/world, wouldn't it?

If we listen to what Bernie's actually saying without trying to mentally see him as a lying, cheating Clinton or other corporate politician and look at what we can see of the monstrous conspiracy he's maneuvering around, we can remain reality-linked and see the big picture, or at least sections of it.

The people united will never be defeated, as the MIC has found in so many invaded smaller, poorer and militarily weaker countries; no wonder they try so hard to manipulate and break us up into smaller groups where we can be easily picked off.

Why are we letting this time-worn propaganda tactic work again?

I think Bernie has made a calculation and decided it's more efficient to overhaul the Democratic party than overthrow it. I don't agree with that answer. I give the odds of success at about 15% but we'll see in the coming weeks. But I can't really justify my skepticism with cold hard facts. I have no way to know how long it will take to overthrow it or overhaul it. I'm guessing... so is he. I don't condemn him for guessing differently than I do.

I certainly have not reached the point where I believe he is another Clinton trying to coldly and cynically manipulate me with false promises of progressive ideology. I simply cannot reconcile that image of Bernie with the history I know of him or the passion I saw when he spoke. I don't believe he's that good of an actor and I'd like to believe I'm a better judge of character than that. Even Obama didn't fool me this long and I was way less suspicious in '08 and he's a way, WAY better actor.
