When we did the show up in Portland—to give you an idea of someone who passed—some businessman, just walkin' around on the street, came in; we charged a buck, and for a buck you got to see us make all our noise, and the Dead make all their noise, and anything else that happened.
This guy was in a suit, and he had an umbrella. He got the customary cup of stuff. And about midnight, you could see him really get ripped. Somebody who'd probably never been anything but drunk on beer. But he looked around, and he saw all these strange people, and he looked down, and the spotlight was showing down on him, and he saw his shadow.
And he stands up straight, puts that umbrella over his shoulder, and he says:
We're not on the Christ Trip. That's been done, and it doesn't work. You prove your point, and then you have 2,000 years of war. We know where that trip goes.

this is apparently a very well-beloved concert. Downloading the torrents and starting them just now, I have 2 seeding (uploading) peers on the first one and no fewer than 6 seeding peers on the second one. The downloads are proceeding at a rate greater than 1MB/sec on my modest cheapo DSL connection -- and that's on top of the bandwidth overhead connecting me to c99!

I understand most of the "Source:" (the first link), but I'm not absolutely certain about the term "Pre-FM". Here's what I think it means:
Some cassette decks in those times had a filter to deal with - what was it, multipath? from stereo FM signals; so I guess some reel to reel recorders had a similar filter. And it was on the output side of the reel to reel deck and the user could switch the filter to 'Off'.
Whether I'm right or wrong, I do know this: the playing and the sound on the clip rocks.

Strange that a harp of thousand strings should keep in tune so long
I believe what the "Pre-FM" source means is that this concert was recorded and simulcast on a NYC radio station. Back in the cassette days, that was the main source for this show. The band also maintained a recording, of the signal before it was sent to the radio station. IOW a "pre-fm" version of the recording.
In the late 80's a trove of reels were discovered, recorded and stored by sound engineer Betty Cantor Jackson. The coveted 77 run was among these reels. They became known as the "Betty boards." This updated recording came out then.
I think part of the reason why '77 is so near and dear to the hearts of many heads is that for 10 years we lived with some really crappy recordings of these shows. And then one day… pristine soundboards for everyone!
I remember h.s. friends telling me they went to that show! (I was was just starting my sophomore year in college in the Boston area on 9/3/77.)
About a minute or two from Raceway Park, there was an old church--very much out in the country/farmland in central NJ--which was converted into the Englishtown Music Hall. Some of the very best bluegrass and country swing groups in the U.S., during the period, used to play there on weekends. Must've been there 12-15 times in my senior year in h.s., as well as during the Summer of '77 (just weeks prior to that Dead concert!), when I was working down near the shore. (Right on the same "Highway 9" that Springsteen was singing about!) Damn! Your post is bringing back the memories. (But, things were a bit "hazy" then, if I recall. LOL!) Thank you!

My place there, not seen for over a year, not a castle at all. But Seaway Channel view. And on the NY mainland, 2 miles away is a green marker light with 2 sec timing. Visible in some weather conditions.

This was an interesting piece yesterday, about some 87 African migrants, frustrated in their attempt to reach the ass-island of Britain, resettled instead in the French village of Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois—a hamlet so modest it does not, as of this writing, even have, on the tubes, an English wikipedia entry.
Some of the Putois people, they are in a frenzy, because they feel they have been made to accept, more than their fair share, of the British-spurned migrants.
"This is unjust, illegal," foams the mayor. "We are in a situation of mathematical inequality."
Different-ones, there in the town, they are drug down, by that utter nonsense, that, if someone has lived in a place 52 years, and you've lived there 53, you, are somehow, purely by this "longevity," way more bitchin', than they.
"We, for instance, are considered foreigners, because we weren't born here and haven't lived here for 55 years," Marine said, noting that they had arrived from Paris as children.
Others in the village, they are having a Gallic hair-pull, because these migrants are mainly men. Black men. As an aged, nearly 80-year-old Frenchwoman, she says, "if it was just families, that would be one thing. But it's single men—this can be dangerous for women and girls."
Of course. Because some of these—white—women and girls, they, inevitably, will conceive an attraction, for the young black men. And, vice versa. And, then, there, will be, the good, hot, fucking. Which will, inevitably, result, in the production of brown babies. The soon-come, global, future. When all the humans, in all the world, shall, all, be brown.
The 87 migrants, meanwhile, almost all young men, from Sudan, they are mostly about:
"We don't know anything about what's going on, anything about it at all," he said, gesturing to the town. "We just want our cigarettes."
Absolutely.
Here's the thing:
For 500 years, the white people boiled out of Europe, and plagued the entire planet. They went everywhere, uninvited, and did whatever they wanted to do, everywhere. They stole all the resources, killed and enslaved the peoples, drew their stupid borders, and completely upended everybody. When they receded back into Europe, they had so fucked everybody up that now everywhere in the world you look there are men in suits and ties. The permanent and lasting effects they had on all cultures are so deep and so many that most people don't even notice them.
Now, the brown people are coming home. To the homes of the white people. Their countries. The countries of the white people. It's natural, it's balance, it's karmic, it's inevitable, and it's not going to stop.
The white people do not just get to have their Thai food, and their "evening blues"—they're also going to get the actual people.
After what they did, are still doing, the white people, they have no fucking right, to keep brown people out of their countries. The white people do not get to upend all of brown and yellow people world and then not let the brown and yellow people they've fucked over not come into their countries, where things may be better and safer.
It's all going to be one world, all the colors bled into one, everyone global, and at the same time every individual human respected and valued as an individual human being. That end is so clear. It will sometimes be painful getting there, but we'll get there.
People, these days, somehow, for some reason, forget, that the idea of one world, was originally a left idea: see Trotsky, Wells, the IWW, Lennon.
These Trumps and Brexiters and European "populists," they are the last throes of the white people: wailing and throwing their rattles against the coming together of the whole brown globe. They are already in the dustbin of history. The browning of the planet, the oneing, it has already happened. Just have to wait. For the time to catch up.
In the future—near—there will be museums, sad, where will be displayed, wax replicas, of the last ur-humans—the knuckledraggers, the people who tried to screech and kick and scream, against the coming of the global light. Of course, The Hairball, he shall there feature prominently, as shall Orban, and the Le Pens, and Wilders, and Putin, and Buchanan, and Raimondo, and the like.
Alas, and alack, in the largest such museums, there shall be registers, that will list, among many others, an uncomfortable number of people, from this very site.
Those who supported, enabled, excused, equated, minimized, The Hairball. Larval no-minds. Who, forever after, must live with the stench of their rot, and for the rest of their lives.

For 500 years, the white people boiled out of Europe, and plagued the entire planet. They went everywhere, uninvited, and did whatever they wanted to do, everywhere. They stole all the resources, killed and enslaved the peoples, drew their stupid borders, and completely upended everybody. When they receded back into Europe, they had so fucked everybody up that now everywhere in the world you look there are men in suits and ties. The permanent and lasting effects they had on all cultures are so deep and so many that most people don't even notice them.
Now, the brown people are coming home. To the homes of the white people. Their countries. The countries of the white people. It's natural, it's balance, it's karmic, it's inevitable, and it's not going to stop.
The white people do not just get to have their Thai food, and their "evening blues"—they're also going to get the actual people.
After what they did, are still doing, the white people, they have no fucking right, to keep brown people out of their countries. The white people do not get to upend all of brown and yellow people world and then not let the brown and yellow people they've fucked over not come into their countries, where things may be better and safer.
It's all going to be one world, all the colors bled into one, everyone global, and at the same time every individual human respected and valued as an individual human being. That end is so clear. It will sometimes be painful getting there, but we'll get there.
People, these days, somehow, for some reason, forget, that the idea of one world, was originally a left idea: see Trotsky, Wells, the IWW, Lennon.
These Trumps and Brexiters and European "populists," they are the last throes of the white people: wailing and throwing their rattles against the coming together of the whole brown globe. They are already in the dustbin of history. The browning of the planet, the oneing, it has already happened. Just have to wait. For the time to catch up.
In the future—near—there will be museums, sad, where will be displayed, wax replicas, of the last ur-humans—the knuckledraggers, the people who tried to screech and kick and scream, against the coming of the global light. Of course, The Hairball, he shall there feature prominently, as shall Orban, and the Le Pens, and Wilders, and Putin, and Buchanan, and Raimondo, and the like.
