U.S. vote authorities warned to be alert to Russian hacks faking fraud - officials

U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials are warning that hackers with ties to Russia's intelligence services could try to undermine the credibility of the presidential election by posting documents online purporting to show evidence of voter fraud.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said however, that the U.S. election system is so large, diffuse and antiquated that hackers would not be able to change the outcome of the Nov. 8 election.

But hackers could post documents, some of which might be falsified, that are designed to create public perceptions of widespread voter fraud, the officials said.

I don't want to run afoul of fair use restrictions so I'll cut it there, but the very next paragraph says that there is no specific evidence of such a plan. But it could maybe possibly hypothetically theoretically happen.

This is what our tax dollars buy. Woo-hoo!!

WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Wednesday the federal government should consider designating the U.S. election process as "critical infrastructure" to give the voting system greater protection against cyber attacks.

Johnson made the comment in response to a reporter's question about whether electronic voting machines are vulnerable to hackers in November's presidential and congressional elections. There are more than 9,000 state, county and city jurisdictions that collect and tally votes throughout the nation.

"We are actively thinking about election cybersecurity right now," Johnson told reporters at a newsmaker breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

But thanks for the heads up. I will be sure to not trust any more articles about election rigging from anti-American rags out to subvert our democracy.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

If they make it a part of the national infrastructure, they won't need to steal anything. They'll just declare the vote is over, and they won with 98%of the vote.
