an interesting place. Not too far from there in SE PA near Kennett Square is Longwood Gardens which is exceptional.

Your ability to capture colors is excellent and I enjoy seeing the butterflies.

(I believe Ladew was in disrepair a couple of decades ago and a local group spent a lot of time and expertise in restoration.)

heh, i spend a lot of time at longwood gardens, most of my flower photos are taken there.

interestingly, both ladew and longwood are in private hands and support themselves through memberships to maintain the grounds, buildings and plantings. longwood is a huge operation with lots of employees and professional master gardeners.

greenhouse as well as the tree ferns; and, I like the cloud forest area with all the moss and liverworts. It's quite a place.

The 200 year old trees are a joy to behold also.

Ladew has been rehabilitated from being neglected and is quite a wonder these days. It's nice that the interest is there to maintain these community assets.

Thanks again.

I was just yesterday at Longwood, not photographing on this visit as I'm there rather frequently, but just stopping by after a spell just down the road from there with a tree nearer to 400 to 500 years old. It's a beauty.

http://www.pabigtrees.com/tree_detail.aspx?tree=TR20100930182444847

And that tree is surrounded by sycamores that are mere pups of some 200 years. The whole region around there is known for its trees.

wow! that's a pretty impressive oak!

i'm hoping to check out longwood one weekend soon, if it will just stop raining on the weekends.

Question mark or comma for the upper one, buckeye for the eyed one? Seen any Monarchs this year? I have not. Swallowtails (black and tiger) are everywhere in the trees here.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

joe shikspack's picture

the top one, i think, is a comma. (it's pretty hard to tell them and the question marks apart, unless you can actually see the tiny marks on their wings that identify them - i thought i saw the comma mark on this one, but i did not get a good shot of it)

you are correct about the buckeye.

i saw a couple of monarchs the day i shot the other butterfly photos, but they were feeling uncooperative:

IMG_6254exc-s

i have seen more monarchs this year than last, which was dreadful. ms shikspack plants for them and we only saw a couple last year at home and a handful elsewhere.

this year i've seen several at home and dozens of them at longwood, ladew and elsewhere.

here's one i saw a few weeks ago at longwood:

I have found some hardwoods and pine with bees in them but never cedar.
Slugs make a home in them and the bears love them.

White pine, oak, even chestnut, but cedars are small here.

Thanks for the open thread and beautiful butterflies.

This is the last photo before my camera broke a couple days ago. I have a very small and inferior point and shoot to use until I figure out how and with what I replace my old canon G9 with. Something similar is all I know. I really enjoyed most things about that very good small camera.

joe shikspack's picture

well, if your camera had to pick a last location to take a picture of before crapping out... it was a pretty nice choice. Smile

i think that canon still makes the g9. or, then again, some of their rebel series dslrs are not that much more expensive.

I am considering another from the "G" series, but I'd like one with a better sensor and a little less noise. I'll look at the rebel series. Thanks for the suggestion. I've spent several hours reading about the possibilities. There are many, and it's all quite confusing. I think maybe, I should stick with the "G" series (but, an upgraded one) since I really like the camera; and eliminate altogether the overwhelming other possibilities?

Have a good weekend.

I had a crystalline clear blue sky today, making all the reds and yellows pop. Rain tonight. Plant migration in early tomorrow, taking advantage of external watering one last time. Now my tomatoes are blooming. lol, sigh.

There is a large flower field about 30 minutes north of San Diego where they're grown and is open to the public in the spring.

Just a beautiful set of images, but the pink lilies are terrific.
I grow them here at my place from a bunch I found years ago & often miss the blooms since they are down in a side yard.

with her creation of little rabbit "mimi" that I fall in a deep "session of self-questioning" of who I really am.

Smile love to read this thread and all the photos. It's time I discover Longwood garden. It's such a shame how little inquiries I made with my neighborhoods in the past.

This series can be very soothing for the nerves. Thanks to all who post here.

Mimi is a character from my daughter’s favourite childhood books, Mimi und Brumm. Brumm is a big gentle bear and Mimi is the cutest, most imaginative little mouse. She and Brumm are best friends, and whenever Brumm is sad or brooding Mimi always comes up with the sweetest, sometimes silly, but always great solutions. They really are a delight together.
